U44 Essential to any organization is an efficient working staff composed of skilled typists, accountants, and business lawyers. The Business Department constantly experimented with new ways to relate their material to the realities of business. To carry out this plan, they initiated a program in which actual office work was integrated with the school clay. Our Home Economics course has grown since the Woodbury School icebox and ovens. ln Syosset, home design, nutrition values, sewing, general household instructions, BUSINESS and cooking were all part of the course. The only bad feature of the set up was that fifth and sixth period classes were subiect to severe-mental and gastric frustrations caused by the delectable odors emanating from the ovens. Just as the efforts of great men have given delight and enlightment to the world, so the eFforts of the unsung heroes of the Art Department have given pleasure and guidance to the students of Syosset High School. They endeavored to instill in us a sense of creativity and inventiveness, and tried to channel our thoughts toward the recognition and apprecia- tion of beauty. Realizing the presence of diverse talents and interests, the Art Department offered many specialized courses to the future painters, sculptors, designers, commercial artists, and dabblers. It was a year of expansion and progress for the Department, and thanks to an excellent staff, a very successful one. One of the most enioyable and rewarding forms of Art is music. Mr. William T. Netter, an erudite, tall man, the first music department chairman, had the opportunity to esta- blish and coordinate the organization of the Syosset High School Orchestra, the band, the choir, the chorus and the marching band. The curriculum, a discussion of music theory, construction, history and thought, augmented by audio aids was well planned and executed. The fine arts were not obscured in Syosset High School. General Print Shop Man's ideas, in order to be considered worthwhile, must be capable of practical application. The Industrial Arts Department made practical applications of the concepts that academic subjects introduced only as theory. The graduates of the Industrial Arts Department were able to assume a role in American industry. We are proud of the growth of this department, for now it can take its place as a vital part of the school. Each year many lives are tragically lost on the highways due to human error. Through the learning experience on the road, classroom theory and the forceful eltorts of our Driver's Education Department, our students became aware of the need for vehicular safety.
