Here at Syosset we had the advantage of ideal facilities and a well-qualified statt. Students were able to continue a math course through the senior year. As in our Science Department, the more ambitious students took advantage of a wonderful newly ini- tiated advancement program. 57

While the scientists of this century have striven to uncover new principles and devise new applications of these principles, it has also been their express desire that civilization does not 'forget its moral obligation to itself. The Science Department hoped that its course of study in Syosset High School would in- still in the students a desire to search for pure knowledge concurrent with a feel- ing of moral responsibility toward their fellow men. As proof of the excellence of our Science Department, the i958 Science Congress was featured here. Furthermore, the conscientious students could avail themselves of advancement opportunities within the department. 56

--1---n..,t......,.t.. LANGUAGE With the world growing progressively smaller, it is only natural that the study of foreign language has become pro- minent as a basic tool of understanding. The department, recognizing this trend, saw tit to include a broad language program in the Syosset High School cur- riculm. The class of 'I959 saw great changes. ln '55, the begin- ning of the high school's history, three languages were of- fered: Latin, French and Spanish, all taught by Mrs. Osoinak. By 1959, we had tour languages and eight more teachers.
