Ewing was born in San Angelo Texas Upon gradua- tion from UCLA in June 1965 he reported to NAS Pensacola for flight training. He was designated a naval aviator in August 1966 In September 1966 Captain Ewing reported to VT-3 at NAS Whiting Field to serve as a basic flight instructor After A-4F Skyhawk readiness training at VA-125 1n Lemoore CA Captain Ewing reported to VA-164 in August 1969 He made two combat deployments aboard USS HANCOCK QCVA-195 and flew over 200 missions in Southeast Asia. From December 1971 to June 1973 Captain Ewing was laser systems and threat missile project officer at NAVMISCEN NAS Point Mugu CA He then completed U S Naval test pilot school with class 65 in May 1974 He served with flight test and strike aircraft directorate at the test center where his projects included spin test of the YT-34C TA-4F and TA-7E He was the navy test pilot on the TAV-8AfAV-8A Harrier carrier certifica- tion and INSURV trials. He made the first ever night shipboard launch and recovery of the TAV-8A in June 1976 While at Patuxent River Captain Ewing completed his MS degree from the University of Southern California Captain Ewing Joined VA-86 in October 1976 and deployed aboard USS NIMITZ CCVN-685 In July 1979 he reported as Executive Officer and later assumed command of VA-66 embarked in USS EISENHOWER KCVN-695. His squadron completed the historic EISENHOWER Indian Ocean deployment during the Iranian hostage crisis which included a line period of 156 days at sea. From May 1982 to August 1983, Captain Ewing served as Strike Warfare Officer. COMSIXTHFLT, Gaeta, Italy For 7 months of the tour he was TAD to AFSOUTH as special assistant to the Commander-in-Chief U S. Naval Forces Europe. In March 1984 Captain Ewing took command of Carrier Air Wing 17 and deployed to the Mediterranean in USS SARATOGA QCV-595 In September 1985 he was assigned as the TACAIR analyst in the Secretary of the Navy's office of Program Appraisal. Selected for Senior Executive Fellowship, he attended the JFK School of Government at Harvard Uni- versity September to December 1986 Captain Ewing assumed command of the USS SYLVANIA QAFS-25 on 24 October 1987 and deployed to the Mediterranean for a highly successful assignment as on station AFS from January to June 1988. Captain Ewing's awards include two Meritorious Service Medals, 15 Air Medals, four Navy Commendation Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and numerous unit and foreign campaign awards. He has logged over 6000 flight hours in over 50 U.S. and foreign aircraft with over 1100 arrested landings on seventeen different aircraft carriers. Captain Ewing resides in Virginia Beach with his lovely wife Ann, and their two children Alexis and Taylor.
