After receiv- ing his wings and commission in August 1962, his next year was spent as a primary flight instructor in Pensacola, FL. Captain Wisely then reported to Utility Squadron 3 at NAS North Island flying the Douglas F6-A Skyray. In October 1964, he reported to Fighter Squadron 121 at NAS Miramar, to fly the F-4B Phantom. Joining Fighter Squadron 114 in may 1965, he deployed to Southeast Asia aboard USS KITTY HAWK CCVA 631 in October. He and the "Aardvarks" of Fighter Squadron 114 deployed again on USS KITTY HAWK the fol- lowing October. During this cruise, Captain Wisely was cred- ited with shooting down two enemy aircraft and became the first Vietnam Veteran with two kills. He was also shot down by groundfire on a Hanoi strike and later picked up by a "Jolly Green" helo on the border of Laos and North Vietnam. In August 1967, he reported to the Naval Plant Representa- tive Office at the McDonnell Douglas Plant in St. Louis, where he flew eight different versions of the F-4 Phantom. In Decem- ber 1968, he reported to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA and received his B.A. in International Relations in 1970. In August 1971, Captain Wisely returned to Fighter Squad- ron 114 as Operations!Maintenance Officer and again de- ployed to Vietnam in February 1972 where he logged his sooth KITTY HAWK arrested landing. During this cruise, due to combat losses, he became Commanding Officer tActingj. In December 1973, Captain Wisely reported to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 4 at Pt. Mugu, CA where he participated in a variety of Chief of Naval Operations assigned test projects for the fighter community. Serving in billets of Chief Opera- tional Test Director and later Executive Officer, he flew the F- 14, F-4, F-5, A-4, T-38, C-1 and other aircraft. During this tour, he was selected as a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. He reported to Fighter Squadron 151 as Executive Officer on 1 July 1977 aboard USS MIDWAY QCV 415 homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. On 19 October 1978, Captain Wisely as- sumed command of Fighter Squadron 151. In December 1979, Captain Wisely took command of the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, as their flight leader. In March 1982, he became the Executive Officer of the USS AMERICA QCV 663, deploying to the Medi- terranean and Indian Ocean. In October 1985, he moved to Washington DC to be Director of Navy Programs, Liaison in the Office of Legislative Affairs. After 10 months, he moved to the Secretary of the Navy's Office of Program Appraisal as the Deputy Director and was later Acting OPA for 3 months before the new director arrived. Captain Wisely assumed command of the USS SYLVANIA QAFS 25 on 28 March 1986. He took SYLVANIA to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a highly successful Refresher Training and Operational Propulsion Exam during the summer of 1986. From September 1986 to February 1987 SYLVANIA deployed to the Mediterranean Sea as the Sixth Fleet "on station AFS." This deployment was touted by those in Sixth Fleet as "the best in many years." Captain Wisely's awards include the Silver Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, 29 Air Medals, six Navy Commendation Medals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and other campaign and foreign decorations. He has logged over 5450 flight hours and 800 carrier landings. Captain Wisely and his wife Ian currently reside in Virginia Beach, VA and have a son Denny Jr., and a daughter Susan both away at college. If 3 LCDR Peters reported on board in April 1985, just in time to make the 1985 Mediterranean cruise. One SYLVANIA returned from the Mediterranean, LCDR Peters took SYL- VANIA through an extensive 5 month yard period. Then LCDR Peters was instrumental in the highly successful Inter- mediate Refresher Training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. With one month between SYLVANlA's return from IRPT and her 1986 Mediterranean deployment, LCDR Peters pushed the PGM along preparing SYLVANIA administratively for the cruise. After the best APS cruise ever, LCDR Peters was relieved by CDR Reed January 1987. CDR Reed took SYL9 XANIA through the last part of her cruise and brought her ome. DKD Wbm Crue.. NE . ' Kumi, Q IQ! USS SYLVANIA was built by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company of San Diego, California, and was commissioned 11 July 1964 in Long Beach, California. USS SYLVANIA was named for communities in Georgia and Ohio. e As a combat stores ship, USS SYLVANIA was designed to replace and consolidate the underway replenishment tasks of the refrigerator-stores ship LAPD, the general stores issue ship QAKSD, and the aviation supply ship QAVSJ. SYLVANIA has thousands of racks, bins, and drawers in which spare parts are carried, automated data processing equipment to assist in maintaining accurate stock control and fiscal records, heavy duty elevators, package and pallet conveyors, and fork lift trucks for internal movement of material. To perform the final transfer to the customer ship SYLVANIA has modern booms, winches, and automatic tension devices to maintain taut transfer lines between ships. In addition, SYLVANIA carries two H-46 Sea Knight helicopters to move material via vertical replenishment. These helicopters, pilots and maintenance personnel are assigned from Helicopter Support Squadron EIGHT in Norfolk, Virginia. Prom 2.5 April 1965 until 30 September 1969, USS SYLVANIA was homeported in Naples, Italy, and assigned the task of furnishing the SIXTH Fleet, in the Mediterranean, with major portion of its regular monthly resupply. Since changing its homeport to Norfolk, USS SYLVANIA has deployed to the Mediterranean numerous times. In September 1976, returning from a routine deployment, USS SYLVANIA had the honor of transporting the world-famous King Tut Exhibit to America for the New York Metropolitan Museum. SYLVANIA was awarded the Battle Efficiency Award for Service Squadron FOUR for the competitive year ending 30 September 1983, as well as Department Awards for Excellence in Damage Control, Supply, fleet Support Operations, Engineering, Deck Seamanship and Navigation, and CommandfControl and Communications. SYL- VANIA was also awarded the CINCLANTPLT Golden Anchor Award for excellence in personnel retention for 1983 and received the Navy Expenditionary Medal for her participation in Sixth Fleet peace keeping efforts in Lebanon in 1983. She was again awarded the Battle Efficiency "E" for the competitive year 1 October 1983 to March 1985 in addition to departmental awards in Main Propulsion, Damage Control, Navigation, Deck Seamanship, CommandfControl and Communication and Fleet Support. SYL- VANIA was also awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Surface Ship Safety Award CMSLPJ for the October 1983 to March 1985 competitive year. X ,V Vllr I CRUISEBCDCDK STAFF LAYCUT AND DESIGN 103 R.
