SYLVANIA BIO 'Ihe mission of USS SYLVANIA is to resupply other ships at sea USS SYLVANIA xvas built by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company of San Diego and xx as commissioned 11 July 1964 in Long Beach California USS SYLVANLA is named for communities in Georgia and Ohio As a combat stores ship USS SYLVANIA xx as designed to replace and consolidate the underxvay replenishment tasks of the refrigerated stores ship CAFJ the general stores issue ship QAKSJ and the aviation supply ship CAVSJ SYLVANIA has thousands of racks bins and draxx ers in xx hich spare parts are carried automated data processmg equipment to assist in maintaining accurate stock control and flscal records heavx duty elevators package and pallet conx ey ors and fork lift trucks for internal mox ement of material To perform the final transfer to the customer ship SYLVAYIA has modern booms taut transfer lines betxx een shxps In add1t1on SYLVANIA via vertical replemshment These helicopter pilots and maintenance personnel are assigned from Helicopter Support Squadron 6 in Norfolk, Virginia From 25 April 19623 tmtjl 30 September 1969 USS SYLVANIA xvas homeported in Naples Italx and assigned the task of furnishing the Sixth Fleet, in the Mediterranean with the major portion of 1tS regular monthly resupply In March 1970 USS SYLX ANIA entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard for the ship s first overhaul Since leaxing drydock in July 1970 untll Julx 1982 USS SYLVAN IA has deplox ed to the Med1terranean eleven times In September 1976 returning from a 1out1ne deployment USS SYLVANIA had the honor of transporting the xvorld-famous King Tut Exhibit to America for the Nexx York Metropol1tan Museum A normal deployment schedule will find the USS SYLVANLA in the Mediterranean for five months and back to Norfolk, Virgima for the eight months thereafter Mamtenance of the ship is scheduled in a Phased Mamtenance Plan in xx luch a portion ofthe overhaul work is accomplished each time the ship is in Norfolk Atypical month rn the Mediterranean xvill find USS SYLVANLA steaming three to four thousand mrles dehvering goods to an ax erage of 40 shlps Anyxxhere from 2 000 to 2 500 pallets xv1ll be mox ed each month xv1th slightly over half bemg transferred by helicopter In add1t1on to stores USS SYLVANIA delix ers mall and passengers and is the fore1gn currency coordinator for all units of the Sixth Fleet After an arduous 2 to 3 xx eeks the ship visits a port such as Malaga Spam or Naples Italy for a week to ten dax s for ma1ntenance and recreation before starting the next month s replemshment cycle USS SYLVANIA enjoys a reputation for excellence among the units of the Atlantic Fleet 'Ihe sh1p was the Axx ard and has rece1x ed all of the seven possible Departlnental Excellence axx ards In addition USS SYLX ANIA has been named Mob1le Logistics Support Force Ship of the 1 ear and has earned txx o recent Golden Anchor Awards for personnel retention by major afloat commands The key to USS SYLVANIAS success has been peopleonented command policies to ensure optimal quahtx of hfe for the crexx and for their families The abxlitx of the Combat Stores Ships to p1 ovide fleet units a great range of supplx support from a single underxx ax source rn a short perlod of tlme enhances the fleet mobrhty msures endurance in a combat zone and reduces exposure to enemx attack during underway resupplx operations V .
