Sylvania conducted this visit during a break in routine training operations off the east coast. Interesting enough, Sylvania was unable to clear the Talmadge Memorial bridge because of her height and was required to back nearly two miles to a turning basin sufficiently wide enough to turn the ship. The ship sailed up the 400-500 foot-wide Savannah River channel and moored adjacent to the cities waterfront residential and nightlife area, thus providing what one interested onlooker called, The most impressive sight I've seen come up the river in quite awhile! In contrast to the rustic hulls of merchant vessels that frequent the river channels, the freshly painted hull of Sylvania impressed thousands of waterfront, binocular-clad spectators. She certainly looks better than that one, said one elderly gentleman, comparing Sylvania to another ship navigating the river. Sylvania, commanded by Capt. John W. Adams, held weekend open-house sessions for Savannah residents. Over 2,000 people were welcomed aboard to see what a Navy ship, looked like up close. Extensive news and TV coverage welcomed Sylvania and her initial entry into the harbor was covered by both of the city's major television stations. Savannah's mayor, who received a Sylvania plaque suitably engraved for the occasion of the visit, presented the key to the city to Capt. Adams. Savannah's residents were most hospitable to the entire crew, recreational facilities, night spots, tourist attractions and historic sights all welcomed Sylvania and the people were a most generous group of hosts. The Navy League of Savannah provided a reception which allowed an enjoyable interchange at the personal level. Perhaps the command's entire goodwill visit can best be summed up by one youngster's comments shortly after leaving Sylvania's open-house tour, Daddy, can I be a sailor ? 1' H50 J, Q 11.
