He does more for the morale of the SYLVANIA than any other single crew member. Night after night, his weary voice drones in the jargon of Ham radio, This is WAQDJQ, mobile region one, conducting overseas phone patch traffic with WB4KCI in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and a clear frequency would be greatly appreciated. Chief Lilla's phone patches fill the gap created by the weeks that can pass waiting for letters to cross in the mail. On one occasion, a man was able to talk to his wife five hours after she had her first baby, when he was over 5,000 miles away. u Q In the last two cruises, Chief Lilla has completed 2,319 calls, for 520 different customers. Over 1900 of those were made with Willie Roelant, a Virginia Beach I-Iam operator. This book is dedicated to those two men who have contributed so much time and effort for us all on SYLVANIA. x W!-XSD Support Activities in Washington, D.C. from July 1964 to August 1965. He then served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Plans and Programs Support Activity until June 1966. He was next assigned as Assistant Navigator aboard the USS RANDOLPH homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, and deployed to the Atlan- tic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean areas from July 1966 until June 1968. He attended Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island during the academic year 1968-1969, and earned his Master of Science degree in Political Science from the George Wash- ington University during this period. Following graduation, Captain ADAMS received replacement pilot training at FAETULANT and VS-30 prior to joining VS-24 at Norfolk, Vir- ginia in December 1969. This squadron relocated to Quonset Point, Rhode Island, where Captain ADAMS served as Adminis- trative and Operations Officer, deploying aboard the USS INTREPID to the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic and Carib- bean areas until detachment in November 1971. He next reported to VS-30 in December 1971 and served as Executive Officer until detachment in May 1973. He then reported to Commander Air Antisubmarine Wing ONE and served as S-3A Fleet Introduction Officer from June 1973 until May 1974. He reported to VS-22 at Cecil Field, Florida in June 2 COMMANDI G OFFICER Captain John W. ADAMS was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1935, and raised in Kokomo, Indiana, graduating from Kokomo High School in 1953. After attending Purdue University, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954, graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign, USN, in June 1958. He entered flight training after graduation and was designated a Naval Aviator in December 1959. He commenced his first fleet assignment with VS-32 in January 1960 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. During this tour he made de- ployments in the Atlantic and Caribbean aboard the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN, flying the S-2F aircraft. In July 1963, Captain ADAMS was assigned to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California for a year's study. Upon completion of this tour, he served as Aide to the Director, Field 1974, served as Executive Officer and as Commanding Officer until June 1976. During his command tour, VS-22 conducted the first Atlantic Fleet S-3A deployment aboard the USS Saratoga, and won the Arnold J. Isbell, COMNAVAIRLANT Aviation Safety, COMNAVAIRLANT Battle Efficiency E, and COMSIXTHFLT ASW Excellence Awards. In June 1976 he reported to Commander Air Antisubmarine Wing ONE, and served as Chief Staff Officer until detachment in June 1977. He next served on the staff of Deputy Chief of Naval Operations tAir Warfarei as Sea Based ASW Plans and Programs Officer from June 1977 until June 1979. He commanded Air Antisubmarine Wing ONE from August 1979 to December 1980, and after detachment attended various courses of instruction prior to reporting to USS SYLVANIA. Captain ADAMS is married to the former Ann Mcgill of Wayzata, Minnesota. They reside in Orange Park, Florida with their children, Catherine, Elizabeth, Patricia, and David. Captain ADAMS assumed command of USS SYLVANIA CAFS-23 on 22 July 1981 in LaMaddalena, Sardinia. EXECUTI E OFFICER Commander David VAN SAUN was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on November 17, 1945. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles on June 14, 1968 and was commissioned through the regular NROTC program. Commander VAN SAUN reported to the destroyer USS JENKINS CDD 4475 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, via the Engineer Officers course for Destroyers in San Diego. USS JENKINS was decommissioned in June 1969, after which Commander VAN SAUN reported as a member of the precommissioning crew of USS BENICIA CPG 967 as Chief Engineer. USS BEN ICIA was commissioned in April 1970 and homeported in San Diego. Commander VAN SAUN fleeted up to Executive Officer on USS BENICIA in January 1971. After decommissioning USS BENICIA in October 1971, Commander VAN SAUN reported to Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. In December 1972, he graduated witha Masters of Science in Management. Then he attended Surface Warfare Officers' Department Head Course in Newport, Rhode Island. In September 1973, Commander VAN SAUN reported as Operations Officer on USS LAWRENCE CDDG 43 in Norfolk, Virginia. Following twenty-one months on USS LAWRENCE, his department head tour was split and he served another seventeen months as First Lieutenant on USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY CLST 11979. After attending the Prospective Commanding Officers' Course in Newport, Commander VAN SAUN reported as Commanding Officer, USS AN DROIT CMSO 5097 in March, 1977, USS ARDROIT is homeported in Newport. In August 1977, Commander VAN SAUN crossdecked to USS DETECTOR CMSO 4293 and relieved as Commanding Officer. Upon being relieved of command in August 1979, he reported to the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College in Newport. To keep track of our position, the Quartermasters use radar, loran, celestial, and satellite lines of position to get a fix , not to mention visual means and a lot of horse sense. The ship's log - A daily written record of events and shipboard evolutions, is maintained by the QM's. They also set and wind the ship's chronometers, a life or death task back in the days of exclusively celestial navigation. The DET's primary mission is VERTREP, or vertical replenishment. When deployed, Sylvania carries two Boeing Sea Knight helicopters, each capable of transferring 4,000 pound external loads. VERTREP is used to transfer over half the ship's deliveries, but in practice VERTREP and alongside replenishment are complementary capabilities. Both methods are often employed at the same time. In addition to cargo, the men of DET SEVEN transfer personnel and mail to customer ships.
