COMMANDING OFFICERS l CAPTAIN LINUS W. FREEMAN, JR. CAPTAIN D. BRUCE CARGILL Linus W. Freeman was born in Nashville, Tennesee in 1926, He served in the Merchant Marine from 1945 to 1954 in the capacity of Senior Purser and then asa Deck Officer. Commissioned in 1954, he served aboard the Aircraft Carrier Hornet until 1956. His other sea tours were aboard the Amphibious Ship Bayfield and Destroyer O'Bannon, where he served as Operations Officer and Navigator, before fleeting-up to the position of Executive Officer. Captain Freeman commanded the Destroyer Ftupertus during the Vietnam War, followed by a tour as COMCRUDESPACLOGREP Wilirflyexccoyrations include: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with four gold stars and one Combat Navy Commendation Medal with one gold star with Combat Cross of Gallantry fvietnarnl, Navy Distinguished Service Order, Vietnam Service Medal with five stars, and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with deaisfain Freeman served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations from 1964 to 1965 as a Manpower Allocator, and then as Head of Special Projects for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations lManpowerl from 1965 to 1966. From 1972 to 1976 he served as a Military Assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal. I r The Captain is a graduate of the Maritime School in New York. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1962 from the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey: graduated with distinction from the Naval War College in 1967116 VGCGIVGU 3 Masfef Of Science from Shippensburg College Graduate School in 19713800 he 9 adUated ffom i 1972. m?nAF!b3iLYali3y ?9Cy7t?gCsap1tain Freeman assumed command of the Combat Stores Ship Sylvania, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. I ' Captain Freeman is married to the former Elaine Pussigur, of New Orleans, Louisiana. They have two children, Michelle, 21 and Linus. 17, Captain D. Bruce CARGILL graduated from the University of Washington as an NROTC Midshipman earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned an Ensign in June1958, received orders to the Naval AirTraining Command and in September 1959 was awarded his Aviator's Wings. Early assignments as a pilot were with VS-24 and VS-27 at the Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia. While there, he deployed aboard the USS VALLEY FORGE, USS ESSEX and USS INTREPID to Mediterranean and North Atlantic waters, Captain CARGILL attended the U,S. Naval Postgraduate School, -Monterey, California from 1963 until 1965. In 1966, he completed further study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduating with degrees of Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering and Engineer of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His next tour of duty was at the Naval Air Station, Lemoore, California, with VA-22, flying the A-4 Skyhawk. He made two combat deployments to Southeast Asia in USS RANGER ' ' ' and USS BON HOMME RICHARD earning sixteen Air Medals, a NavY Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and the Vietnamese Cross Of Gallantry, In 1969, Captain CARGILL reported to the Naval AirTest Center Patuxent Maryland and was assigned to the Weapons Systems Test and Flight Test Divisions. As Program Manager of the Automatic Carrier Landing System Project, he work d t ' I 'ffl e ex ensive ywi most of the Navy's aircraft carriers and many Naval Air Stations F . . . . . ollowing refresher training at NAS Lemoore, California, he reported to VA-1 13, also at Lemoore, as Executive Officer and again deployed to the Gulfof Tonkin ab d USS oar RANGER. In April 1973, Captain CARGILL became Commanding Officer of VA-113 and A ' ' ' upon returning to CONUS was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was again assigned to the staff of the Commander Naval Air Force. U.S. Atlantic Fleet, this time as Force Training Officer. ln ceremonies in Naples, Italy, on 28 February 1979, Captain CARGILL became the Commanding Officer of USS SYLVANlA QAFS-2l, a combat stores ship homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.
