She scorns the man whose heart is faint And doesn't show him pity. And like a girl, she needs the paint To keep her looking pretty. For love she'll brave the ocean vast Be she gig or cruiser, But if you fail to tie her fast You're almost sure to lose her. She's happiest beneath the stars. A time for speculation, And- a has a hatred for all bars Just like Carrie Nation. Be firm with her and she'll behave When skies are dark above you, And let her take a water wave, Praise her and she'll love you. That's why a ship must have a Mate She needs a good provider. A good strong arm to keep her straight To comfort her and guide her. For such she'll brace the toughest gales And angry seas that crowd her, And in a brand new suit of sails No dame looks any prouder. The ship is like a dame in that She's feminine and swanky, You'll find the one that's broad and fat ls never mean or cranky, Yes, ships are ladylike, indeed For take them altogether, The ones that show a lot of speed Can't stand the roughest weather. fPelican Press-Gleaned From Garland Mille-r's Scrapbo k ' x -v .0 ,,...- QV, X.,,Q -X, - F 'l'1xN.i- N -aqQ7 ra-Q ':q43-N.- ...., - V Q. 11'- 'Xa N'-N .nn 'gd AFS? in I 'l Assistant Supply Officer LIEUTENANT COMMANDER LEONARD J. And most of us have read a book, or heard a lusty tale, about these men who sail these ships, through lightning, wind and hail But there's a place within each ship, that legend fails to teach. lt's down below the water line and it takes a living toll- a hot metal, living hell, that sailors call the hole. lt houses engines run by steam that makes the shafts go round. A place of fire, and noise, and heat, that beats your spirits down. Where boilers, like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam, are molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream. Whose threat, that from the fires roar, is like living doubt, that any minute would with scorn, escape and crush you out. Where turbines scream like tortured souls alone and lost in hell, as ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell, The men who keep the fires lit, and make the engines run, are strangers to the world of night, and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear, Their aspect pays no living thing, the tribute of a tear. For there's not much that men can do, that these men haven't done Beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run. And every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell, For if the fires ever fail, their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war, upon an angry sea, The men below just grimly smile, at what their fate might be. They're locked in below like men fore-doomed, who hear no battle cry lt's well assumed that if they're hit, the men below will die. , For every day's a war down there, when the guages all read red Twelve-hundred pounds of heated steam, can kill you mightly dead So if you ever write their songs, or try to tell their tale The very words would make you hear, a fired-furnace's wail And people as a general rule, don't hear of men of steel , So little's heard about this place, that sailors call the hole But I can sing about this place, and try to make you see I The hardened life of men down there, cause one of them is me l've seen these sweat-soaked heroes fight in superheat d ' u To keep their ship alive and right, though,no one knowsthzyre there And thus, they'll fight ages on, till warships sail no more Amid the boilers' mighty heat, and the turbines hellish ror So when you see a ship pull out, to meet a warlike foe ' remember family if you Can, The Men who san Below ,, l ..............f Wi- l'W:an. nrvzfwmn,.,,-3 MORE UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT xr ,f -1-L..,-., vf-vw'-S W in ,, ,, ,V Y .....,,. jig ff -Q ,. .,. 1,5-fu , 'M pm. We wish to welcome our new shipmates who are not pictured, regretfully not everyone could be shown. The entire cruisebook staff hopes you've enjoyed this momento of our journey throughout the Mediterranean Sea. While we lived and worked together for nearly seven months, we all shared good times along with trials and tribulations not to mention the long hours of hard work. Although not every event or evolution could be recorded within these covers, we hope you'll use what is shown to -spark your own personal memories. On the outset of our cruise, a few crew members had doubts whether they could handle the demanding task of Replenishing at Sea. Now that we've returned safely, we can look back with pride knowing we've upheld the fine reputation of Sylvania, Printed Sz Published by Liskey Lithograph Corporation Norfolk, Virginia Cruisebook Staff October 20, 1978 thru May 15, 1979 EMC J.
