'Vw , v' -.A - ,N 'Ks :.:i USS S YL VANIA, AFS-2, is the second of the MA RS class fast combat stores ships, designed to carry one-half to two-thirds the provisions handled by the Store Ship, the same amount of general cargo of the General Store Issue Ship and the same amount of aviation supplies handled by the Aviation Supply Ship. This highly diversified range includes such items as nuts d an bolts, lettuce and cabbage, canned goods and frozen meats, candies and cigarettes, paint, and spare parts for aircraft engines and ships boilers. S YL VA NIA employs an automatic tensioning device to maintain taut transfer lines between ships allowing the smooth transfer' of supplies during underway replenishment operations at sea, and two UH-46D Sea Knight Helicopters to carry an average of two and one-half tons of cargo per trip during vertical replenishment operations. S YL VANIA 'S record has been consistently one of distinguished service. From 25 April 1965 until 30 September 1969 SYL VANIA wash d' 1 ' ' ' ' 9 omeporte in Naples, Italy and assigned the task of furnishing the Sixth Fleet with the major portion of its regular monthlv supplies. This task was accomplished without the benefits of a regular overhaul and without missing a single operational commitment. Upon completion of a four month overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shqnyard and intensive refresher training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. S YI. VANIA returned to the Medite S rranean ea on 28 November 1970 for six months of service to the U.S. Stkth Fleet. Similar curises were made from February to August, 1972 and May to December, 1973. The most recently completed chapter of S YL VA NIA 'S h ' b :story egan shortly after her tenth birthday when on 16 August 1974, Captain John R. C. Mitchell relieved Captain Gerald G. Roberts as Commanding Officer and on 29 August the sh? headed for its fourth extended deployment to the Med since being homeported in Norfolk. Relieving the USS CONCORD in September, S YI. VANIA became the on station AFS, resupplying over 250 ships with their monthly needs. Returning home on 28 hllfazh, I 975, S YL VANIA XS' next stop is for a major overhaul, preparing her for her second decade of distinguished service to I 8 881. 'QT
