Like all divisions and departments of SYLVANIA, deck's component divisions, iirst, second, hos'n, and third, consist of many talented, hard working deck apes and gunner's mates who, together with each and everyother SYLVAN IA sailor plow, furrow, plant, and harvest the seeds that are her mission to the Sixth Fleet. Like the intricate grapevine, deck and the other departments intertwine with each other in a unique pattern, each performing his own as well as many other jobs, to achieveywitheipride the success that has become SYLVANIA. first lfiivision, under the direction of Ensign Bodenheimer, is charged with maintenance, cleanliness and operation of the cornpartrnents and machinery forward of the superstructure, main deck and above. This is no small task and first division sailors can be seen turning and burning in a constant vigilance keeping all machinery ready for action. Underway replenishment is the name of our game and it is in this vital function which first division excells, It is not at all unusual to see all rigs flying at top speed landing cargo on the decks of customer ships, and when SYLVANIA was tapped for the dubious distinction to he the first AFOS in the fleet, first division received the nod to man the fueling at sea stations.
