SYLVANIA lAFS-Zl Fteer POST ormce New Yonai ossox T0 THE SYLVANIA FAMILY, An extended deployment or cruise overseas provides unparalleled opportunities for the recording of interesting events in the life of a ship and her crew. The excitement of foreign ports and different cultures, long hours of hard work, and the separation from loved ones are qualities certainly characteristic of the de- ployment, and probably form the basis of the mental picture most people associate with a cruise overseas. This representation is accurate enough but rather incom- plete, as I view the same circumstances. A singularly distinguishing feature of the six month deployment overseas is the change in the ship and her personnel. While stationed in the continental United States the ship is largely getting ready for deployment. Training is stressed and the various exercises representative of the ship's mission are conducted. Shortly prior to deployment a period of weeks is spent under rigorous conditions at Guan- 5 Qu 'lofi-e r -w ' tanamo Bay, Cuba perfecting all aspects of the ship's operations. Of course, at the same time all personnel are concerned with the myriad problems of a separated family and ties ashore, and these problems occupy a.large portion of the Navy man's thoughts . When the last line is cast off from the pier, the change is rather dramatic for the professional demands of a Navy man's life at sea are such as to brook no less than complete dedication. The resulting concentration of efforts welds the ship into a cohesive unit with the single minded purpose of getting on with the job. As the days and weeks pass the ship is honed into a finely tuned instrument capable of responding to the extremely demanding requirements of fluctuating operational schedules. On occasions the work day extends for as much as thirty-six hours, to be followed by a brief respite and a repetition of the same. At this point, with the end of the cruise in sight, the results of the long hours of training and preparation are clearly evident. Regardless of the problem or nature of the assignment, this crew has accomplished the objective without re- gard for the hours or efforts expended. Their performance under these conditions cannot be understood or appreciated by anyone who has not served at sea in a similar environment. In my opinion their conduct has been nothing less than heroic and it reaffirms my faith in today's youth who can and do perform splendidly as a matter of routine. I trust that you will be able to glimpse this magnificent spirit of SYLVANIA and her crew emanating through these pages. Sincerely, Gerald G. ROBERTS we Captain, U. S. Navy I . Each era of naval history brought refinements in the type and missions of the vessels comprising the sea power of UCS., and SYLVANIA is such a refinement, being a combined, improved version of the store, general issue, and aviation supply ship. From the drawing board of the U.S. Bureau of Ships, through construction by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company of Long Beach, California, to her eventual homeports of Naples, Italy and Norfolk, Virginia, SYLVANIA's mission has Qbeenithe complete logistic replenishment of Sixth Fleet ships operating in the Med. SYLVANIAihas accomplished her highly demanding Mission very successfully as evidenced by her five consecutive Supply E's and-the numerous Battle, Engineering and other competitive E's. During her Naples period, she handled 50 logistic replenishment cycles with the help of a monthly reefer ship, delivering more than 38,000 short tons of supplies through underway and vertical replenishment methods. The latest chapterin-SYLlIANIA's history began in March of 1973 with ya brief but intensive period of refresher train- ing in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This was followed by a loading out period in May and on 25 May she left Norfolk for an extended deployment tothe- Mediterranean, relieving the USS CONCORD in mid-June. The first half of the cruisewas normalin every aspect with long hours of hard work and eagerly awaited liberty ports. Then, with the outbreakfofthe Arab-Israeli conflict in October, SYLVAN IA became caught up along with the other Sixth Fleet units in the events leading to a general alert. She proceeded to the eastern Med where she served the con- tinuous needs of an enlarged on station fleet. SYLVAN IA performed her task expeditiously despite the added burden of the alert and experienced only a short delay in returning home. On 24 November she headed home, arriving in Norfolk on the morning of 3 December, completing another successful mission. Like all divisions and departments of SYLVANIA, deck's component divisions, iirst, second, hos'n, and third, consist of many talented, hard working deck apes and gunner's mates who, together with each and everyother SYLVAN IA sailor plow, furrow, plant, and harvest the seeds that are her mission to the Sixth Fleet. Like the intricate grapevine, deck and the other departments intertwine with each other in a unique pattern, each performing his own as well as many other jobs, to achieveywitheipride the success that has become SYLVANIA. first lfiivision, under the direction of Ensign Bodenheimer, is charged with maintenance, cleanliness and operation of the cornpartrnents and machinery forward of the superstructure, main deck and above. This is no small task and first division sailors can be seen turning and burning in a constant vigilance keeping all machinery ready for action. Underway replenishment is the name of our game and it is in this vital function which first division excells, It is not at all unusual to see all rigs flying at top speed landing cargo on the decks of customer ships, and when SYLVANIA was tapped for the dubious distinction to he the first AFOS in the fleet, first division received the nod to man the fueling at sea stations. LTJ G Herbert directs the operation of second division which consists of rated boatswain's mates and deck, seamen who are charged with the responsibility to maintain the after portion of SYLVANIA's topside. spaces. In addition to this tremendous task, it is the men of second division who stand bridge watches un-d derway, anchor, and moor the ship, and along with first division, operate the rigs during alongside replenishment operations. In today's modern Navy where the pass word is technology, boatswain's mates and deck seamen are the link with the past whose daily lives closely parallel those of their forerunning counterparts. The day inf itihichaan invented machine can outdo a good seaman is in the far distant future. p ' If it is possible for deck to contain any specialists then these will be found in BOS'N division.
