Carver assumed The duTies of ExecuTive Officer on board USS SYLVANVX CAPS-QD on 13 July i972 afTer complefing a Three and one-half year Tour of duTy wiTh The ,loinf Chiefs of STaff in WashingTon, O.C. As a college undergraduaTe, Commander Carver aTTended The UniversiTy of Tennessee for Two years before Transferring To Memphis STaTe UniversiTy where he compleTed his sfudies in i957 and received his B.S. Degree in accounTing. Affer graduaTion he applied for and was accepTed To The OCS program. l-le was commissioned an Ensign in November l957. Eollowing brief periods of insTrucTion in Minewarfare and Naval ,lusTice School, Ensign Carver reporTed To The USS AOOQESSIVE CMSO-11221 for his firsT sea duTy as Eirsf Lieu- TenanT, Minesweeping Officer, and Supply Officer. As a LieuTenanT Ciunior gradei, he refurned To OCS in NewporT for lnsTrucTion OuTy. ln April i962 l.ieuTenanT Carver again reporTed for sea duTy, This Time as OperaTions Officer on board The USS BMQTON COO-7221. l-le held This billeT for Two years before Traveling To WashingTon, OC. To work on The sTaff of The Chief of Naval OperaTions. While in The l3enTagon l.ieuTenanT Carver complefed a posT graduaTe degree program aT George Washingfon UniversiTy. Every Naval Officer's goal is To command his own ship. LieuTenanT Carver achieved This goal in June l966 when he received orders To reporT To The USS llVlPLlClT flVlSO'455i as her skipper.
