in retrospect SYLVANIA is named for Georgia and Ohio communiTies ThaT bear The name of The asTeroid SYLVANIA. She is The second ship of The MARS class combaT sTores ships To be commissioned, and Therefore carries The designaTion AFS-2. As a combaT sTores ship, SYLVANIA is designed To consolidaTe The underway re- plenishmenT efforTs of The STore Ship, The General Issue Ship, and The AviaTion Supply Ship. The HSYLVANIAH is Truly a one sTop replenishmenT. From 25 April l965 To 30 SepTember l969, SYLVANlA's mission was To coordinaTe and handle The logisTic replenishmenT of The SIXTH f:leeT. A highly demanding replenish- menT cycle began each monTh wiTh The arrival of a refrigeraTor Type ship CAFD carrying The re-supply iTems ordered for ThaT parTicular monTh. TogeTher SYLVANIA and The Al: would sTeam The MediTerranean To re-supply ships of The SixTh l:leeT on sTaTion. AT The end of The cycle, The AF would Transfer her remaining cargo To SYl.VANlA To bring her sTores To full operaTing capabiliTy. Then The AF would deparT The MediTerranean for Norfolk, Vir- ginia, and SYLVANIA would awaiT The arrival of The nexT reefer and The beginning of The nexT monTh's CLQGREPD logisTic replenishmenT cycle. While permanenTly deployed To The MediTerranean SYLVANIA sTeamed l68,8ll nauTical miles during 50 such LOGREP cycles and issued over 38,25l shorT Tons Cover 76 million lbs.i of provisions and repair parTs. l:urThermore, SYl.VANlA did so wiThouT missing a single operaTional commiTmenT over nearly four and one half years. Nearly 900 ships were received alongside for under- way replenishmenT and counTless oThers were verTically replenished using The Two Ui-l-116D Sea KnighTs helicopTers of CombaT l-lelicopTer SupporT Squadron SlX. AfTer reTurning from a six monTh deploymenT To The Med on i8 June l97l, SYLVANIA enTered Norfolk Naval Shipyard, l3orTsmouTh, Virginia, for four monThs of rouTine mainTe- nance. Leaving Norfolk Naval Shipyard on Li OcTober l97l, SYLVANIA engaged in Type Training in The Virginia Capes OperaTing Area unTil i3 OcTobef l97l. She deparTed her homeporT of Norfolk, Virginia on 2l OcTober l97l. Arriving in l:orT Lauderdale, Florida on 23 OcTober l97l, SYl.VANlA conducTed a four day porT visiT To ThaT ciTy. Underway again on 27 OcTober l97l SYLVANIA proceeded To GuanTanamo Bay, Cuba where she underwenT an abbreviaTed buT inTensive period of refresher Training under The guidance of The l:leeT Training Group, following which-she reTurned To Norfolk, Virginia on l5 Nov- ember l97l. SYLVANIA enTered Horne BroThers Shipyard on 23 November l97l To undergo a re- sTricTed availabiliTy in preparaTion for her deploymenT To The lVlediTerranean. She lefT Norfolk on 24 February l972, for a six monTh cruise wiTh The SixTh l:leeT.
