L L c SYLVAN HILLS SEh DR HIGH SCHOOL As the year comes to a close we catch a final glimpse of the things we have done. Our fellow classmates, friends, and faculty have all played a vital part in making this school year a success. In this yearbook we have attempted to retain our memo- ries through the use of words and pictures. We, the Yearbook Staff of Sylvan Hills High School, dedicate this 1959 Bruin to Mrs. Margaret McFarland for her unselfish efforts and devotion to the student body. The Bruin has earned its role in the school curriculum in that it provides an excellent opportunity for educational planning in representing the various activities in such a way as to interpret the spirit and life of the school. In illustrating and describing the edu- cational activities of the year, the yearbook helps the parents to understand better the total program of the school as well as providing a souvenir record for students. The Bruin is a student product, with every piece of copy and layout the work of stu- dents. In preparing the yearbook, the students have an outlet for creative expression, advertising and photography experience, as well as preparing a record of school events and interpreting the school to the public. They first beat FULLER in the semi-finals by a very close score of 57-48. They had beat FULLER two times be- fore and they weren't afraid of the outcome of this game. Then came the finals. The BEARS had been waiting for this all year. This was a chance to beat their arch rivals, J. T. Rob- inson. The series with Joe T. had been 1-1 up to this time, but the BEARS took the championship game 51-45. When the ALL-COUNTY team was picked three BEARS were named to it. They were Bobby Brown, Mike Haynie, and Freddy Eastoh. We all supported those BEARS and we are as proud of them as we will be next year. S. She may choose from i wide variety of positions, and enjoy fascinating work in her own home own, or in another city. Business is growing so fast that there is a iation-widc shortage of skilled workers. Employers compete among themselves to offer the business-trained roung woman the highest salary, the most pleasant working conditions, ind the best opportunities for promotion. Among the 446 occupations for women listed in the 1950 census, that of stenographer, secretary or typist comes first by a wide margin, with 1,501,090 employed. TO THE YOUNG MAN GRADUATE To help you understand the exciting opportunities and rewards which await the young man who enters business today, we remind you — As a business man, you can choose any field which interests you— manufacturing, merchandising, publishing, banking, transportation—any field at all. You can work for General Motors, for the government, or set yourself up in business. Business men as a group earn the highest incomes in the country. They often travel widely, and frequently enjoy the finest homes, cars, and social standing in their communities. It is estimated that 60'- of all employed men are engaged in business in some form, lor example, the U. S. Census ( 1950) lists 320,799 male accountants, 2.042,229 salesmen and sales clerks, and 4,340,6X7 managers, officials, ami proprietors. Don't Skimp The following quotation from CHANGING TIMES, the Kip- lingcr Magazine, makes this clear: Right no if there arc probably as many as a million office jobs going begging for lack of appli- cants. In the next few years the need will grow even stronger. Don't skimp on your school- ing. Unless you are a high school or business school grad- uate, many companies will not hire you even for beginning jobs —or if they do take you out of necessity, they via be slou to promote yon later. Outlook for the Future The 195 7 Occupational Out- look I landbook , published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, states: A shortage of qualified ac- countants is due to a rising de- mand for accountants to assist managnnent in controlling rap- idly expanding business opera- tions. The demand is e spec ted to continue to be strong for the remainder of the decade and during the early 1960’s. There has never before been a time in American History when there was greater demand for higl school graduates technically trained for service in business, industry, and government than then is today.
