Andy Partch may be best remembered as the A.S.B. advisor, but some may remember him as varsity bas- ketball coach in the sixties, or even as a P.E. coach. However, he's remembered, his importance to Su-Hi will al- ways be evident. He leaves behind the wealthiest A.S.B. in the district, and takes with him a dedication to the school that will never be equaled. Often a student will go to a peer counselor instead of a regular counselor because it is easier for them to talk to someone in their own age group. The peer counselors also have the job of welcoming new students to Sweetwater by showing them around campus, making the transition to Su-Hi easier. There are 30 people in the peer counseling class now preparing to be peer counselors. Whether they will be- come peer counselors is a decision they will make after completing the class. Seven years ago, Gary Zarecky assumed the head coaching position at Sweetwater High School. He was overly optimistic and somewhat of an idealist. He inherited a program that had produced only six winning seasons in nearly 50 years. I did not bother him. He anticipated a quick turnabout. It did not come. He changed his philoso- phy to patience. Now, Coach Zarecky looks back to the 1978-79 season, and cannot help but remind himself and others of where the program came from. It required belief and dedicated people that made Sweetwater basketball what it is today-a winning program. The Devils had to climb a huge stair case to develop this program, though, but they knew at the top of the stairs, was the one thing they wanted. They started their adventure to the top by ranking it2 in the pre-season polls. They had only begun. They moved higher as they captured the 32nd annual Kiwanis Tournament by toppling Nlorse High, 51-50. The ii 1 ranking was theirs. They traveled to Sacramento, California and captured third place in a Christmas Tounrna- ment that involved many of the best teams in the state, Upon returning, the Devils fell back a few steps after taking disappointing losses to lVlorse and Coronado. From then on, the Devils never looked back. Led by All-American Michael Pitts, and superstars Tom Slavinsky, Bobby Loper, James Davis, Danny Samudio, Doumas Lambert, and Pat Cabulagan, San Diego County saw Sweetwater explode and win 14 consecutive games. They captured the lVletro League Banner and entered the county playoffs with confidence and determi- nation of being CIF champs. They were almost at the top of the stairs. The time for the Devils was now. They scrambled Hilltop and El Capitan and slipped past Nlorse once again in what some say was the most exciting bas- ketball game ever. Now . . . on to the Sports Arena. The Devils needed one more step, but Kearny stood in the way. They battled to the finish and the Komets stood at the top, 57-50. Sweetwater was second-to-the top, in the eyes of Kearny, at least. Michael Pitts was selected lVletro Player-of-the-Year and CIF-County Player-of-the-Year. Also, he was picked to participate in two all-star prep basketball games. One in North Carolina and one in Northern California, which boosted the team and the school a few steps. The Devils handed El Cap a heart- throbbing defeat and set the stage for another showdown with arch-rival Morse. The challenge was here at Pt. Loma College. More than 2,500 screaming fans were there. Who would win? Both Morse and Sweetwater won in previous meetings. It was the rubber match between the top two teams in the county. Pitts vs. Levingston. What a match-up. Call the highway pa- trol! Please do something, because Sweetwater was rob- bed on lVlarch 2, 1979. Yes, you saw the guys who did it, everyone did. They took many things from Su-Hi and the names of the criminals were Kirkpatrick and Stokes. They belonged to the l'Komet gang. And yes, oficer, there is no doubt they ripped off the Devils in the San Diego Sports Arena. With the slickness of cat burglars, with quickness of cats, Kirkpatrick and Stokes wiped 'em clean enabling Kearny High School to score a stunning 57-50 victory in the CIF Championship Basketball game. It was a heartbreaker. It was a disappointment. It was, in fact, a solid defeat. With determination of Michael Pitts and Danny Sa- mudio, Sweetwater tied the score at 48-48 in the fourth quarter only to let Kearny run away with the most im- portant game of the year. According to Sweetwater witnesses, Kearny should have been arrested for their assault and battery. Yet in- stead of conviction, Kearny escaped and celebrated a hard-worked-for game. The Devils did not have enough evidence to win their case. Sweetwater enjoyed one of the most productive sea- sons ever, maybe even one the best, and reached many individual and team goals. This was a main problem in the Junior Varsity's running events and it all showed at the end of each meet. l'JV is still learning, was the reply of Coach Ralph Mora as he commented on the season and the JV track team. l'They are consistent though, he said. Consistency seemed to be the key when Andy Rodriguez, Clyde Sewell, Terry Hubbard, and David Crestik teamed up, for they executed a very 'ltogether 440 yd. relay team. They held ilfun raisers such as rose and carnation sales, car washes, Senior Class T-Shirts, pep ribbons, and sold hot chocolate and doughnuts on cold mornings. All their hard work throughout the year paid ot? in a memorable prom, held at the Atlantis on lVlission Bay. They also enjoyed the traditional Grad Nite and other end-of-the-year activities.
