Teresa Ress - Editor Tim Neuman Seniors - This is Our Time The Class of '77 broke the string of unspirited senior classes by winning the spirit stick at pep assemblies. This spirit was exemplitied by the numerous activities that the class had. Just to name a few, the class sponsored a Magic Mountain trip, dances, skating parties, and bake sales. The seniors also had the beneht of common unit among the members which helped in getting work done. The main goals of the year were to have a nice prom at very little cost to those in attendance and to earn hundreds of dollars to give to students in the form of scholarships to help meet college expenses and reward those who helped themselves by working for the Class of '77. One of the many conversations in the stands on Homecoming night might have sounded like that. The air was hlled with excitement as uneasy spectators awaited the halftime and crowning of the new Queen. As candidates lVlariam Balough, Grace Bernal, Annette lVlanglicmot, Helen lVlurray, and Debbie Tinker were escorted onto the field by their fathers, the announcer told the audience about each girl and her future plans. Finally came the big moment when Grace Bernal was announced as the 1976-77 Homecoming Queen, and last year's Queen Bette Whittemore crowned her. The night had a happy ending as Sweetwater won the game over lVlar Vista, the score 9-O. lVlany attended the Homecoming Dance including alumni. 1 . 45 ce l ,ISE Y, , , .,. The Red Devil football team had the potential to be one of the best in the county, that was proven by taking the lVletro League banner. They also proved that even though we had not had a championship team since '72, we were still a league powerhouse. The gridders had one of the best offensive and defensive teams in the county, outscored opponents 294-69 and shut out five of their adversaries. They completed their season with impressive 9-2 overall, and 8-1 league records. The first four games of the season saw a tight race for the league top spot between Chula Vista, lVlontgomery, and Su-Hi, all had identical 4-0 records. Devil wins came from lVlarian, 14-O, Castle Park, 21-6, Southwest, 60-O, and Bonita Vista, 30-0. T sr Last year, Coach Gary Zarecky made the word' HBasketball a more familiar word around Sweetwater. This year, he has made it a household word. The Devil cagers placed third in the league, and again went to the playoffs. Going to the playoffs two years in a row is something a Devil basketball team has not seen since the '5O's. Height was one of the best things going for the team. Five players were over 6 feet tall. The team found experience in returning senior lettermen Bobby Stokes playing center, and David Apodoca at guard. They also had three sophomores on the team, James Davis, lVlike Pitts, and Tom Slavinsky, which is quite unusual. But experience and height don't necessarily make a good team, it takes team unity and school spirit, and Su-Hi was not lacking in these helds. HWe surprised a lot of teams, commented center Bobby Stokes. HAnd one reason is because we have a lot of team unity and spirit which helps during the games. Coach Zarecky expressed his gratitude to the fans by saying, HThe fans had a tremendous impact on the success of the team. 1. Tom Slavinsky, shoots past Lancer as Jim Wessel and Mike Pitts look on. 2. Jim Wessel attempts Lay-up as Warren Schwitkis watches. 3. Bobby stokes pulls down a rebound. 18 . . Team captain, David Kibodeaux, led the cagers to a Nletro League title, with a 16-2 league record. Their overall record was twenty-three wins and three losseswan all time school record for most wins. They also came up as champions in the Coronado Invitational Tournament. Coach lVliller expressed his happiness with the saying, uThese are the greatest bunch of guys I've had the privilege of coaching. 4 1 183 Softball Strong on omefrom-Behind NGreat season! exclaimed softball Coach lVlarieanne Perrault. uThe team really worked hard and never gave up. I enjoyed coaching these gals. We had a lot of fun. I hope to see them at the top of the league next year. Twice the team played against a tough Hilltop team and stuck with them all the way, only to lose. But strong players such as pitchers Diane Dixon and Kathy Boulette, left fielder Sheri Phillips, and Jeannie White on third base made possible such games as a come-from-behind win over Coronado, The score was 7-2 in the beginning, but the Devil sluggers came back to win 9-7. The lVletro League was one of the toughest, having two of the top ten teams in the county in it, Hilltop, and Coronado. The team had a few top swimmers that really stood out: Lisa Sanders, Ken Tessen, Oliver German, and lVlike lVlyers, captain of the divers. According to Coach Pam Lewis, one of the few female coaches in the county, UThe team didn't enter the season with much ability, but were willing to try and learn, and progressed quite well.
