Kuebler Chairman Harold C. Foster Clerk John M. McDonald District Superintendent To thestudents and faculty of Sweetwater High I send warm personal greetings and my sincere appreciation of work well done during the 1950-1951 school year in spite of inadequate school building facilities. It is a great satisfaction to us all to have the assurance that the State of'California and the voters of our school district have agreed that Sweetwater High facilities must be greatly 'improved at the earliest possible date. When this new construction is completed Sweetwater will have one of the most modern school plants anywhere. New shops, laboratories, library and classrooms of various types are included. The program, as approved, also provides for com- pletion of the school gymnasium for multiple use by physical education activities, school assemblies and the like. A five-acre addition to the northwest portion of the present site will be engineered for underground drainage and graded into a bowl for future construction of an athletic stadium. . Wilbur F. Bradley me M ii t '55 4 Q Dr. E. Morris Hayes 'David E. Roberts Miss Eunice Harris 10 Business Manager Secretary to the Board X I SWEETWATER HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS The 1950-51 school year has been a very enjoyable and profitable experience to students and faculty alike. jointly we extend our best wishes to the graduating seniors and may you all find success in your chosen work. For those of us remaining I have penned the following thoughts to guide us in our future efforts. Our ability, as a school, to assist our nation's support of the United Nation's effort to win the world struggle for the democratic way of life is directly related to the success with which we put into practice our belief in the intrinsic worth of each person and to our ability to help each person realize his individual abili- ties to the fullest. The nation's strength or weakness fundamentally lies in our ability to teach facts, knowledge, and skills that citizens must have to live together and at the same time to teach attitudes, apprecia- tions and ideals that give meaning and value to life. Sweetwater is proud to do its part, in conjunction with other schools, colleges, churches, and the homes of this community in teaching these facts, skills and ideals to insure the strength of our nation. The advisers, officers, and members alike have all worked hard to make their school and social life happier. Our honorary organizations are: the C.S.F., comprised of students with high schol, astic records, Quill and Scroll, a group of outstanding student journalists, and N.F.L., a national honorary speech club. The Block S Club, Su-Hi Artists, Su-Hi Speakers, and Su-Hi Players come under the heading of service clubs which have membership requirements ef achievement. Other organizations that give service but are primarily social clubs are: Su-Ettes, G.A.A., Shutterbugs, Hi C, Tri-Ettes, Sioux Hi-Y, National City Hi-Y, Les Cherettes, Sopho- more Tri-Ettes, and Tri-Y. The whole student body may well be proud of the achievements and accomplish- ments of these service and social groups. - CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION Row 1: B. Davis, N. Hedgpeth, L. Jaime, Z. As the plot unfolds, she is transformed into a young lady through the antics of gossipy Janie, boy-crazy Cathy, and philosophical Abe. Contributing to the mirth were Tubby and his ever-present hay fever, playing opposite Clementine in the romantic lead was jim Seebold as Hank. Janie captured the heart of suave Pete, but catty Cathy was left holding the bag. Bertha, the housekeeper, Mr. and Mrs. Kelley, Clem's 'bewildered parents, Ann McNeil, the speech teacher, and Spinster Miss Prin- gle rounded out the cast of this most delightful of senior class plays. Many observers felt that the Su-Hi varsity was the strongest Metro team at the con- clusion of loop play despite their three won and five lost season record. The most spectacular play of the year provided the winning margin as the Devils edged Calexico 21-18 in the opening game in the valley. Emil Loya intercepted a pass on the Su-Hi goal, ran the ball to the 10 where he lateraled to Ted Granger who covered the re- maining 9O yards. Garry Cummings and Sam Frankson scored the first two touchdowns. One john Archard found the Sweetie left tackle weak and cavorted 150 yards through it to lead the Grossmont Foothillers to 19-12 victory at the Aztec Bowl. The Red and Gray scored on two passes, a Cummings to Frankson and a Cummings to Lou Stills. San,Dieguito, the SCIF minor division champs, were next for the Diablos. A Dick Cleary to Bud Reid aerial with only 20 seconds remaining gave the Northerners a 13-12 decision. The combination of Cummings to Stills marked the first Devil tally, and Steve Pavka recovered a punt blocked by Dick Main for the second. Cummings heaved a long pass to Stills but the speedy end was tackled by the heel and fell one foot from the goal. The fans were provided with an even battle the next week as Harry Sykes and Co. from Coronado squeezed out a 21-14 win. Frankson scored the first touchdown on a plunge, while Waterman hit Stills with a pass for the second. Britt's toe provided the extra points. Big La Jolla High proved too strong for the Newleemen as they rolled to an easy 26-6 decision at the Cove. Waterman scored the only Diablo points on an end run. The Metro League Champions, Escondido, were next and again it was a case of out- playing but not outscoring the opposition. The Cougars came out on top with a last period score, 12-6. Frankson tallied Su-Hi's touchdown on a short line plunge. A late comer by the name of Billy Keller connected with 13 of 19 passes to lead the Sweeties to a 26-20 victory over Oceanside in Su-Hi's homecoming game. Keller accounted for all four touchdowns on three passes, two of them to Granger, and an end run. Sweetwater ended the season in a blaze of touchdowns as they poured it on to down rival Chula Vista 37-21 at their own homecoming. Keller again played excellently, scoring three tallies while Granger scored two, and Sanger accounted for the other. Frankson and Granger were selected All-Metro first team, with Stills All-Metro second team. Smith, Keller, Main, and Bailey, were Honorable Mention All-Metro. B FOOTBALL Sweetwater's Bee football team, under the direction of Collins Haan, turned in a creditable season as they won two of five games. Though they lost three, all of them were one-touchdown victories. Coronado took the opener, 12-6, as the Devils' only score came on a Lindsay- to-Hamlet pass, a combination that clicked many times during the rest of the season. Grossmont's Sophomores were next and the Haanmen nabbed a 12-6 decision as Hamlet grabbed a fumble and tallied, and then took a Lindsay pass on a 60-yard play for the winning score. Again the Sweeties missed the victory column by one TD as the Escondido Cougars squeezed out a 13-6 verdict. Romo Buckley hit right tackle for 15 yards and the only Red and Gray score. Oceanside provided a see-saw battle the next week which saw the Diablos take a 26-20 victory, johnny Nausler scored first on a line plunge, Lindsay scored on a quarterback sneak, and two Lindsay-to-Hamlet aerials finished the TDs. Lindsay converted twice. The league champions, Chula Vista, were next and although they defeated the Devils, 26-19, it was the opinion of many observers that the Devils should have won.. Hero of the day for either side was Don Lindsay, who completed 9 of 15 passes, part of them with a shoulder separation in his flinging arm, Average score of the lightweights' games was Sweetwater 14, Opponents 15. The two Mar Vista games were dillies, the Devils taking the first one, 28-27, and the Mariners the second, 36-33. Escondido was the thorn in the Devils' side as they were the only team the Diablos did not beat. The scores were 34-25 and 54-17. Oceanside fell twice before the Bees, 27-24 and 28-27. Chula Vista's Spartans were shocked by a 38-31 defeat pinned on them by the Sweeties but they got revenge in a tight 24-23 tilt later. ' Starters for the Bees were Lloyd Williams and Don Lindsay at guard, Don Maag or Floyd Streeter at center, and Dave Dunham and Able Portillo at forward. However, the flyweights and their coach, Edwin Livengood, had a lot of fun together despite the discouragement that continu- ally stared them in the face. The starting lineup was usually composed of Lupe Mendoza and Elbert Pederson at forwards, David Keyte at center, and Norm Trivett and Ed Bagley at guards although jim Parker and jim Haas saw plenty of action. Under the able coaching of Ed Livengood the boys improved rapidly throughout the season and the constant improvement made for team strength. Among the top performers were jim Seebold who was the squad's top point-getter, hurdler Ted Granger, sprinter john Palhegyi, shot-putter jim Frankson, and ,pole vaulter-hurdler Paul DeLucia. In the last meet of the season with Chula Vista, Granger set a new record for the high hurdles with a 16.2 effort and Palhegyi tied two school records, running the 100 in 10.2, and the 220 in 22.2. Seebold was also the league's top man in the 440 and broad jump. Second place in the B standing wrote fmis to a highly successful 1951 track season. Rau' 1.' D. Kendall, P. DeLucia, D. Good, j. Sweetwater's 1951 baseball team looked forward to one of the most successful years in its history as a veteran in- field, along with the strongest pitching staff in the Metro League, bolstered the squad. Dick Walker, second string All-Metro for Chula Vista last year, Dave Freeman, transfer from Delano High, Billy Keller, transfer from Imperial High, and Dick Geraci, Diablo chucker for two years formed the twirling line. Pat Briggs, veteran American Legion first sacker, and Nate Kaufman, reserve last year, handled the initial corner while Don Nitsche, a letterman from last year, cavorted around second. Gregorio Trujillo, a promising sopho- more manned shortstop along with Walker when he jasnt itchin Don Bailey, another monogrammer, and 8' . ay Sagger worked at third. The first string outfield was composed of Dick Fred- rickson in left, Don Lesh in center, and George Robinson in right. None of these lads were lettermen but the early practice games proved good experience. Two more out- helders, Garry Cummings, and Tom Baysden, provided depth in the outer gardens. Last year's most valuable player, Lou Stills, returned to catch as did another junior Dick Main, Early season games include a 13-1 trouncing of Point Loma, two victories over the alumni, 18-2 and 11-1, a 13-2 triumph over Grossmont, a 2-1 victory at the expense of La Jolla and also a 10-1 defeat at their hands. Hoover downed the Diablos in a close one 5-2. The big upset of the year saw the Red Devils edge San Diego High School 5-4. Art Cottee Dick Main George Trujillo Outfield Catcher Shortstop l06 TENNIS Tennis, an unknown sport at Devilville, had high and justified hopes of an excellent season as four of last year's top five men returned, only the number two man leaving. Leland Huhn, Johnny Riggs, Robin Southern, and Gary Cooper were top bets for the first four positions as they earned letters there last year and no one looked capable of upsetting them. Of these four, all except Huhn are juniors. The remainder of the team consisted of Hollis Barber, Gerry Fritschmann, Vernon Everett, Vardaman Lawson, Earl Alderman, john Taylor, Alton Brimmage, and Paul Neilsen. The All-Metro meet was won by Escondido with Chula Vista second. The Devils opened the season with a two-point defeat at the hands of tlie San Diego State College Frosh and then followed with a victory over Mar Vista. Next the Red Devils topped the Coronado Green Wave by one point in the next Metro Loop encounter. After dropping a decision to the Escon- dido Cougars, the Red Devil runners topped Ocean- side and followed with a defeat at the hands of the Chula Vista Spartans to complete the season. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL Steam-rolling through all opposition, Gormarfs Giraffes, from sixth-period gym, captured the intra- mural basketball championship with a final 25-18 triumph over- Neale Chapman's second-period crew. The Giraffes highlighted an undefeated season with a tremendous 93-17 victory over the fourth- period Cadets to set a new school intramural record.
