One of the first programs was the Christmas Pageant at which the beautiful choruses-Low, How a Rose Ere Blooming, Praetorius, Beautiful Savior, Christensonj The Three Wise Men, Kountz, and Joyous Christmas, Gavoert-were ex- quisitely sung. Soloist were Phyllis Whalen, Louis and Manuel Camacho, and Milton Critchlow. Both at Vespers and Graduation, in January, the Choir and combined Glee Clubs sang. Phyllis Whalen and Vern Farrah took solo parts. All the vocal organizations did their part well in choruses at the Variety Show, Phyllis Whalen, singing Hero Song from Chocolate Soldier, was the most popular performer on that occasion. Next came the Sacred Concert presented by the Vocal Department, directed by Jessica M. Webber, at the First Baptist Church, in National City, Sunday, March l7. Ten great choruses-among which were Jerusalem, Henry Park- er, God So Loved the World, John Stainer, Alleluia, Mozart- Rosenberger, and Sanctus from St. Cecelia's Mass-were sung inspiringly. i The outstanding number of the Vespers, June, was the Recessional, Kipling-De Koven, with Gloria Swarthout and Milton Critchlow, soloists. ' U o The Feast of the Corn The Vocal Music Department, directed by Miss Jessica Webber, had a most successful and active year. The first program was the Indian Operetto, the Feast of the Corn, given by the girls of the Choir and Glee Club. The fund raised by this program helped purchase the choir robes. Coach Vance G. Clymer's 1940 Metropoli- tan League tennis entry, after many close matches, wound up in the league cellar with- out a win to its credit. Nevertheless, the Red Devils showed the will to win and, despite their' dismal showing, well deserved the block 'S' which they earned. Johnnie Olmsted proved to be the main- stay of the local squad, usually participating in the first singles slot. Dean Bresee and Victor Taber worked the first doubles com- bination in applaudable manner. David Rea played both singles and doubles, as did Bill Seehorn and Bob Beckman. At the close of the first round of competition, the Su-hi racqueteers were in a last place tie with Escondido's Cougars, who later defeated them, three matches to one. Johnnie Olm- sted scored the only Diablo victory in that match. Others on the tennis squad include John Burt, Octavio Romano, and Bob Alex- ander. Coronado's Islanders, behind the sterling leadership of Bob Carrothers, captured the League crown, Carrothers finishing the season undefeated. atm- bP4n,oJLw lntra-mural sports were carried on this year under the able direction of Coach Vance G. Clymer. Teams from each physical education period contended for the school crown in track, football, baseball, tennis, and handball. Eleven six-man football teams played in the pigskin tournament, with Period 4 garnering the championship. Each gym class was represented by two squads, with the excep- tion of Period 5 which supported three teams. During basketball season, cage honors were carted off by the Period 2 hoopsters. In the tennis division, the mixed doubles team of Bob Beckman and Zelva Moeser crushed all opposition in o four round elimination tourney. The finals found Kitty Howery and Paul Hayes facing the ultimate champs, with Bob and Zelva scoring a 6-4, 6-2 triumph. Badminton proved to be a very popular diversion in which many students participated. In the boy's badminton tournament, there were 28 starters. In the finals, Wayne Copp and Mitchell Chase scored i2-l5, i5-IO, i5-12, victory. In the girl's badminton competition, Nona -Ratcliffe and Zelva Moeser completely overwhelmed a field of fourteen players. Handball wars opened with five teams competing. The pair of Angel Miranda and Alfredo Valasquez finally capped the laurels after a rugged round of play, in which Herb Schwarting and Oscar Escolante were defeated by the champions. Victor Taber and Betty Ratcliffe captured mixed doubles badminton honors from Wayne Copp and Zelva Moeser. Track provided some very interesting competition, Jack Browne winning the high jump affair with on outstanding leap. A broad jump by Russ Litchfield of i8 ft. ll in, was another outstanding performance. The third period volley ball squad found the going tough but finally wound up on top of the pile by taking a close decision from the second period "Setter-uppers." The Period l girls' volley Ballers scored clean cut wins over the rest of the weaker sex teams. Katherine Maltby's team won the G. A, A. basketball tournament by defeating a team coptained by Evelyn Stevens. The winning team was composed of Katherine Phillips, Bonnie Daum, Margaret Marshall, Irene Loustalet, Daveen Johnson, and Louise Bobby. MIM' sP4wfd4 Tennis Tennis was very popular with some of our girls this year. They took keen interest in practicing, and Zelva Moeser, Kitty Howery, Frances Gra- ham, Betty Ratcliffe, Jane Ellinghaus, Zelma Cordrey, Beverly Schaus, Helen Conforth, Joyce Dillane, and Corinne Phillips played in the intra-mural games. Indoor At almost any period during the day, groups of girls were active at indoor baseball, Those who liked this sport especially were Evelyn Stevens, Reitha Rolsted, Wilma Jarboe, Dar- lene Jenner, Bette Lord, Caroline Tiffany, Betty Schmedding, Shirley Schaffer, and Lorraine Servatius. Basketball Basketball has been and always will be favored by some girls. Sweet- water girls have some stars in this sport. The best players are Evelyn Stevens, Phyllis Tretsven, Louise Bab- by, Katherine Uyeii, Reitha Rolstad, Lorraine Servatius, Betty Esterbloom, and Catherine and Corinne Phillips. l l QDLZJ' U I3 The game of Volley Ball, thought to be an outgrowth of the ancient games of battle- dore and shuttlecock, played first in the Y.M.C.A., Holyoke, Mass., in l895, since highly developed by men and women nationally, has become one of the favorite girls' sports at Sweetwater. The reasons for its popularity can be readily understood if one has ever played the game. Its good points are many. There is no better game for developing good sportsman- ship, it is economical as to space, the chances for bodily injury are few, it gives healthful muscular exercise and is exciting and fun to play. The physical education classes found it interesting to test their skill by competition between classes and within the classes by grades. The games were first played off between the grades in each physical education class, and then the winning teams met on days after school to determine the championship. After these competitive games, the Junior girls of the first period class defeated the team of the fifth period class, to become the champion volley ball team of Sweetwater.
