The 1 9B2-B3 Briar Patch staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to President and Mrs. Harold B. White- men, Jn, Your sincere support of and involvement In the college has been appreciated and will always be remem- bered. We wish you both the best of luck in whatever you may do; you will be missed. So — " Here ' s to the White- mans hola, hola, hola . . . there ' s nothing that they cannot do! I " Dedication i ■ f A Opening What is S. B.C.? If Daisy Williams could see beyond Monument Hill and gaze at her be- loved Sweet Brian today, she would be overwhelnned at the change. Sweet Briar has become much more than Daisy could ever have dreamed. It is now a place where there is the rare opportunity vi hich is offered to us for learning, for friendships, and for expe- riences which challenge us to live life fully and apprecia te deeply. Life today at Sweet Briar is filled with traditions which are created in memory of Daisy. So, here is to the tradition of laughs, smiles and mem- ories of SBC! Lantern Bearing The night of Junior Banquet is met with much excitemient and cheer by the Junior Class. Dn this night Juniors receive their rings and fight with the senior Class for possession of the " Golden Stairs. " Junior Banquet is traditionally a fun, crazy night — but it is also a very special night for each Junior as she looks forward to her senior year. Lantern Bearing takes place at the end of the year, near graduation. Each senior asks a girl to make a lantern for her and bear it in a special possession around the quad. These lanterns represent some- thing special to the senior they were made for. Lantern Bearing is one of the most beautiful traditions at Sweet Briar be- cause it recognizes the special friend- ships that are formed and the senior ' s appreciation of their years at Sweet Briar. The excitement of graduation is present; yet the apprehension that goes along with it is also very real. At spring step-singing the songs are filled with nostalgia as seniors and un- derclassmen recall many fond memo- ries. Everyone begins to prepare for graduation. For the seniors it marks the end of their college career, but the beginning of a new life beyond the hal- lowed halls. For the underclassmen, it marlcs the loss of special friends, but the transition of moving up. Studenc Life Founders ' Day " Connect Only Connect " were the words of Dean Fon- taine Belfond, repeated over and over during hen address at Opening Convocation. She focused on setting goals for the year and then striving to connect with those goals. President Harold B. White- man also spoke on the stability and yet continual advance- ment of the college over the years. It was his last Convoca- tion at Sweet Briar after 1 -4 years with the college. ! D Student Life Fall Step Singing Once again, Sweet Briar girls all gatlnened with their class around the senior stains to start off the year with singing. Freshmen organized their first group effort of the year, while se- niors, firmly established upon the " Golden Stains, " sang out the tnadi- tional senion song ... all amid laughs, smiles, cheens and shouts of " woo- sie! " Student Life 1 1 Hitching Post At the appointed hour, freshmen and sophomores gathered together to " fight it out " over the possession of the hitching post. The horse-head fig- ure is annually the center of an event where the two classes concurrently attempt to coat the post with the paint of their class color. At the end of the evening, the freshmen were vic- torious and the hitching post was left to remain black until next year. The sophomores then gained possession of the rocl . 1 S Scudenc Life Club Day One of the newest tradi- tions at Sweet Briar is Club Day. It tal es place about a month into the yean and is bas- ically held to acquaint Freshnnen with the different clubs and organizations on campus and their functions. Club Day is sponsored by In- terclub, headed by the Vice- President of the Student Government. Senior Show This year the Senior Class entertained par- ents and students on Parents Weekend with their production of Cinderella. Everyone en- joyed watching Cinderella in the Kingdom of Amherst County under the wrath of her mother Mommie Dearest, as she had to scrub the fireplace with a toothbrush! Luckily, Cinderella was able to attend the Fancy Dress Ball where she met her Prince Charming! Un- fortunately, if she didn ' t get home on time, her coachman would turn into 1 DO security guards. This inside peek of life at Sweet Brian was cleverly performed and amusing to all. 1 A Student Life Ring Game . . . Fashion Show The Hing Game is played whenever a senior becomes engaged. A ring game is called by the senior class president and all seniors gather in the quad where the engagement ring is threaded on a pink and green ribbon. The ring is sent around once very slowly [for all to admire], very quickly the second time, and the third time the engaged girl cuts the ribbon thus announcing her engagement. The fashion show is put on each fall by the senior class. The clothes are nnodeled by different seniors in Pro- thro Commons where everyone ad- mires the clothes while drinking champagne. When the sho A is over, everyone is given the opportunity to try on and buy the fashions. Student Life 1 5 GHOSTS SEEN IR Chung Mungs is an upperclass so- ciety l nown for the friendliness and enthusiasm demonstrated by its members. Everyone at SBC knows the famiiliar sound of " Chung Mung goodies! " yelled in the dorms at night — so much for diets! The rivalry be- tween the ghostly Chung Mungs and the intellectual Tau Phis is an impor- tant and fun pant of Sweet Brian life. Another familiar group on campus is the wacky Aints and Asses [lovely lasses, not one dud!] Originally a take- off of the drama club Paints and Pat- ches, the Asses are now an independent club whose hilarious skits in Grammar Commons offer an entertaining break in an evening. President Whiteman and Bynd Stone are honorary asses, and this year they participated in the Christmas sho A as the Abominable Snowman and Bernie the Misfit Elf, respectively. 1 B ScudenC Life ASSES ARE TAPPED Student Life 1 " 7 FALL WEEKEND. . . BASH OF ' S2 1 S Student Life mi mMBSBrs asm This year the Sophomore Class did a superb job in presenting fall week- end. The theme was " Cruise the Seas with SBC " and the weekend began on Friday night at the Bon Voyage Party from New York City Cto those with less imagination and fun it v as the Wailes CentepJ. Saturday afternoon was spent " On Board " at the Boat- house all the while cruising to Venice, which was arrived to on Saturday night. Suddenly, the Dining Hall had become a romantic sidestneet in Venice, while the Moonlighters had everyone dancing Cand romancing!]. On Sunday, everyone arrived in Mex- ico where the Voltage Brothers were entertaining with their funky-beat sound and antics! The cruise ended much too soon and none will forget the wonderful time they had! The hard A ork of the Class of ' 85 was apparent to every- one who attended and the sopho- mores deserve great credit for such a special time for the rest of the school! Scudent Life 1 9 2D Student Life rS32!C PARTIES AND PALS Scudent Life 21 THE CHRISTMAS SHOW Just as everyone was preparing for a dreary period of studying, studying and more studying the colorful AInts and Asses performed " Arty the Red-Assed Reindeer. " The highlight of the evening was the special appear- ance of President Whiteman and Bynd Stone as Bumble and the Misfit Elf, respectively. The crazy antics and hu- morous lines allowed everyone to for- get Cat least for a hourlJ the period ahead and reminded the school that the holidays and cheerful spirits w ere close at hand! The rannbuntious Aints and Asses ended the show with a lively version of " Have a Holly, Jolly Christ- mas " and everyone left smiling as they dispersed into the cold winter eve- ning. 22 Student Life ' Unconnnnon Women And Others ' ■ mK ' . Paints and Patches ' fall pro- duction was perfornned No- vember 1 B, 19 and 20th. Among the talented and con- vincing were Pilar Unibe. Sara Greer, Michelle Cox, Gate McNider, Hillary Petta, Ellen Ganven, Diana Dawley and special guest star Mrs. Edith Whiteman. Student Life 23 Christmas Caroling . . . In the Quad " I ' ll be home for Christmas ... " The sound of the Sweet Tones singing these words brought tears to the eyes of many students as they ate the annual Christ- mas dinner in Prothno Commons. The an- ticipation of going home for Christmas mixed with the fear of taking examis miade the few days before vacation hectic ones for students; but there were many activi- ties to ease the anxiety. Dorm Parties and Secret Santas were traditional events, as well as caroling in the Quad. Everyone made it through exanns and ar- rived home for the holidays in good Christ- mas spirit. 24 Student Life -iP W WKimi-..L.]l,Jl..li Christmas Dorm Parties Christmas Dinner Scudent Life 25 ABRIAR Every year, each sophomore girl is con- fronted with the difficult question of to go away her Junior year or stay st Sweet Brian — In other words. " Abroad " or " Abnian " ? Those who do go away return to Sweet Briar with a new outlook and confidence, but those who stay on cannpus are able to become involved In more activities and ex- plore new challenges they hadn ' t realized were available to them. Many timies, girls spend their Junior Year at another college in the United States — Southern Methodist University and American University to namie a few. However, for those girls that travel to places such as Germiany, London, Paris, Seville and Scotland the experience cannot be equalized. The girls who do choose to leave Sweet Brian ane deanly missed. Upon thein netunn howeven, they ane quickly descended upon for thein stonies of tnavel, fun and Indepen- dence. The shaning that occuns between ginis that ane " Abnoad " and " Abnian " Is per- haps the most unique aspect — allowing ev- eryone to value from each other ' s experiences. 3i .J " --p ' 1 ■. 1- V — ._ — — f- s J % ■ fil 2B Studenc Life Student Life 27 SWEET BRIAR IS . Sweet Brian has never been just a college to its students, but a comnnu- nity which fosters many close ties and lasting friendships. Freshman orien- tation and the sister classes help even the newest students to imnnediately feel that they are a part of Sweet Brian life. By gnouping inconning fneshmen togethen with an uppen- class onientation leaden they ane led thnough thein finst week and helped with the things that even the hand- book doesn ' t coven — the social life at W S L and Hampden-Sydney on what to expect fnom centain classes. Most impontantly, howeven, ane the new fniendships that ane begun this finst week. That pnocess of developing new fniendships continues, fon most stu- dents, thnoughout thein stay at SBC. Thene is a bond among the students at Sweet Bnian that allows fon the Honon System to wonk — a bond of tnust and nespect fon one anothen. This tie is fostened by the sisten classes and the fact that the donmito- nies ane not segnegated by class. Unity — it ' s pant of the chanacten of a place called Sweet Bnian. 2S Student Life Student Life 29 30 Seniors SENIORS Seniors 31 Mary Ann Albright Dallas, Texas English Party Saturday night — Blue Wool Pants . . .
