S A hVoH  1 mm ■mm HALCYON ♦ SWSSftHfc V Sa. ™ ■™ HB Beginnings . . . With change as the constant in our world, we look for protection in what we see as immovable and impenetrable. As Swarthmore students, for us Parrish becomes the embodiment of refuge from change. Yet, as a diverse group, we all see the building with differ- ent perspectives. The 1985 Halcy- on wishes to convey our different views of Parrish as representative of the richness of diversity that comprises our Swarthmore years. Even though Parrish acts as an anchor in an everchanging world, we have not been immune to the changes of the past year. Dupont has been dedicated, Tarble has been desecrated, and Clothier is being redressed. Toshi Reagon and Steve Reich lifted our spirits and James Michener lifted our as- sets. We said goodbye to Coach Lapinski and hello again to DU. Maybe these changes are insig- nificant in light of the profound ef- fect that the past four years have had on this campus. We ' ve lost ML2, Tarble, and a Willets 3rd Floor Kitchen to fire. We ' ve watched a fledgling football team gain steam and explode! We ' ve add- ed a new pool (Ware), a new dorm (Mertz), a new library (Cor- nell), and a new Swattie (Patsy Jardini). These four years have been characterized by flux and we were anchored here during it all. For our constancy over the past four years, this yearbook is dedicated to the class of 1985. The 8-1 record, third consecutive Conference Championship, Fourth consecutive national ranking, ten members chosen as All-Centennial players, MVP of the Centennial Confer- ence (Glenn Bennett), and three Pizza Hut All-Americans marked the comple- tion of the careers of twelve Seniors. The blocking of Ed Stockburger, Bob Klein, Dave Jardini, and Sean Crowley; the pass catching of Thomas Walsh; the running of Pete Coveleski; and the kicking of Bruce Abernathy and Chris Perkins enabled the Garnet to break all of the existing school scoring records. The cinderblock linebacking of Dom Lepone and Robert Toner and the in- terceptions of John Hiros and Ed Greene led the Garnet defense to a number one ranking nationally. Following this period. President Fraser invited the fraternity to submit a formal proposal for reinstatement. After a fall semester of in- tensive review, the President readmitted the fraternity on a probationary basis in January, 1985. In large part, the return of D.U. was due to the resolve of its senior members to avoid repetition of the negative actions of the past, and on their firm conviction that the fraternity can enhance community life. For the 1984-85 school year, this book was that secret for us. You see some new things; some old things are gone. Within the changes, we hope to have captured Swarthmore in a way that will help everyone to treasure her his individual memories forever. To all of you who took an interest in how the book was progressing during the year — Thanks. And to all of you who dealt directly with us during our various setbacks — Thanks; we couldn ' t have gotten by without you. Special thanks to Mike Gilroy; he was right when he said that the finished product would make it all worthwhile. To the seniors — this one ' s for you. Use it to remember your past when you ' re out in the real world living your future. Take that diploma and run; best of luck wherever you go with it. Sincerely, Anne and Jean Editors-in-Chief . . .
