Favorites such as Mummy Wrap, Keep-The-Ball-Rolling , Hu- man Scrabble were once again re- peated. The crowd set a new record for Sinergy by making the en- gery pass through 111 people in only 7 seconds. The finale of this evening featured Lap Sit in which all team members and audi- ence members put their trust faith in their fellow man. Deanna Wallace Leasa Lee — true friends helping one another. Fair Games '87 gave stu- dents a chance to release some built up hostilities while at the same time having fun. It also gives the audience team members a chance to laugh at ourselves. To partici- pate in a Fair Game activities requires no special athletic ability, but only a committ- ment to having fun! And fun is what the audience and participants have. The games were under the chairmanship of Student Council President Eric Butler. The winning team enjoyed their prize of a pizza lunch on Friday of Homecoming Week. 23 (l-r, t-b) 1986 Homecoming Queen Melanie Bloomer is driven through town during the parade by Todd Yunker. While The Parade Passes By 24 The 1987 Homecoming Parade once again brought excitement to downtown Swanton. The traditional parade began at Park School continued through downtown with Grand Marshall Lewis Taylor leading the way. The parade concluded at the back of the high school for the electrifying bonfire. During the parade, the class floats were judged with the Sophomore winning first place, with the Jun- iors second. Freshman third, Seniors com- ing in fourth place. Included in the line-up were the combined Swanton High Junior High School Bands, Police Department, Cheerleaders, Firetruck, Rescue Squad. This year's Parade Bonfire was under the chairmanship of Sophomore Shane Schmidt. Arrangements began in early summer. Serv- ing as MC for the bonfire was Mr. Ron Dixon. This year was no exception. Some- thing making this year's more interesting was the Homecoming Queen Kim Estes Junior Mike Eit- niear on crutches. Even though this temporary handi- cap might have some people down, not our spirited court. This only seemed to add to everyones anticipa- tion excitement. The 1987 Homecoming Court. “200 Years — Then Now was the Homecoming theme for 1987. With 1987 being the 200th Birthday of the Constitution of the United States, Swanton High School honored our country with its theme. Council members students transformed the gym into 200 years of Americana. One unique feature of this year's Homecoming was the number of at- tendants who demonstrated their School Spirit even though they were on crutches. This year's dance was the largest attended in recent years. 29 Maybe Next Year This year's Varsity was a year of emotional highs and lows. Preseason began with camp very promis- ing scrimmages. Tragedy struck; however, when Es- tes, 3 year letter winner team co-captain, went down with a serious knee injury was out for the duration of the season. Without Estes experience and leadership, the team had a hard time putting it all together. The first 5 matches of the season were losses before winning 2 matches in a row at the Springfield Tournament. The next win didn't come until 5 match- es later against Liberty Center. The final victory of the season was against Rogers. The final win-loss record for the year was 4- 20. The record doesn't real- ly show the accomplish- ments of the season, continued on page 31 (l-r, t-b) Heilmann praying for a hit while Sampsel is ready for a miss. Individual hon- ors wenet to Sampsel Robinson, who received AIILeague recognition. The future holds much promise for Swanton volleyball. All of this year's letter winners will be re- turning. Experience will be the key to success. The J. V. squad finished a successful season under the guid- ance of Mr. Mike Redd. They fin- ised the season with a 13-8 record. The cheerleaders were caught sightseeing before competition at Lansing, Mich. The Squad doing one of their winning mounts at competition. One of the most challenging, but rewarding activities at Swan ton High School is that of Cheerleading. Few people real- ize the amount of time; effort, dedication, patience that this sport takes. Cheerleading has one of the longest seasons of all. The squad begins in the spring with try- outs for the squad. Their work has only begun. Practices hap- pen all summer. The team trav- els to National Competition so that they can be the best for Swan ton fans. Cheerleaders cheer for not only one sport, football, but also for the entire basketball season. One of the major obstacles fac- ing cheerleaders each year is that of school spirit apathy. It is a constant effort for them to try to raise the spirit of the fans teams. With a little help from the fans, Swanton spirit can soar to new heights. Heights that any school in Ohio can envy. 34 Who's in there Linda Pfaff? Caught in the Act Central Office Roy E. Vivian, Superintendent The 1987-88 school year will be remembered as a time when we celebrated the 200th birthday of the U. S. Con- stitution. This is important because it is the foundation of our way of life, determining our political, economic, legal, religious, social structures. Benjamin Franklin was one of the oldest wisest of the framers of the Constitution. After he signed the docu- ment, a young friend asked, 'What have we created, Mr. Franklin?' He replied, 'A democracy, I think — if we can keep it.' That is what we have today. A democracy — if we can keep it. By learning about democracy practicing citi- zenship in our schools, we the people can secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves for the future. As we remember the birthday celebration, let us also remember that, to keep a democracy, we must have a strong public education system.
