It was Sylvia Barret's (Carol Collins) first class as an English teacher. She was young naive, but she really cared. From the moment when the first student yelled, Hi teach! to the moment Sylvia could return a, Hi Pupe! , the play depicted life in a city school. Joe Ferone (Jared Doren) was the clas- sic tough kid — bad student. With a toothpick in his mouth he swaggered into Miss Barret’s class challenged her. Sylvia didn’t know how to handle a student who didn't seem to want to learn. Her fellow teacher, Bea Schacter (Jennifer Nagy) was quick to tell her, ...let it be a challenge.” Soon Sylvia met Paul Barringer (Tim McQuade), the would-be-poet English teacher. There was definitely some at- traction, but Paul's attitude of indiffer- ence towards students upset the relationship. (continued on page 33) (1-r, t-b) Jared Doren, oh yeh! Carol Collins telling Jared Doren what for, while Eric Butler enjoys. Jennifer Doren, did you get it out of your teeth? Look, Kelly Moore, it's a light, says Peter Hopkins. But Carol, why won't you got asks Tim McQuade. Oh well, Carol, I guess some of us are just perfect! states Jennifer Nagy. Keystone Players (continued from pg 32) Sylvia found herself caught up in a sys- tem that prosecuted chalks thieves had plenty of posters, bur no books. Led by Mr. McHabe (Eric Butler), the rest of the faculty seemed more conerned with discipline that teaching. Other faculty included Anna Phipps, Kelly Wood, Heidi Doren, Julie Pharis, Dagne Krout. When Joe Ferone finally admitted he was tired of going up the down stiar- case,” Miss Barrett knew she couln’t leave. The other studetns were happy with that decision. Students at Calvin Coolidge High were Amy Elton, Jenni- fer Doren, Adam Wynar, Roger Pen- nington, Peter Hopkins, Sharon Free- stone, Ronnie Moffett, Kris Harp, Kelly Moore, Angela Topel, Beth Blayz, Amy Hardy, Pamela Johnson, Becky Nagy, Fern Haas, Stephanie Tulk. Working on the production was Janna Shonebarger. The play was a good first effort by many of the cast members as well as the direc- tor Miss Ruth Warneke. 33 Council Goes On Retreat Student Council held its first annual retreat in the fall of ’86. During the three days spent at Camp Michaels in Bucyrus, Oh., members learned new skills in communication, beginning a project, following through, new ideas to bring to SHS. Self-motiva- tion, thought, awareness were also topics campers learned more about one another in three days through discussion and reliance on one another than a lor people learn in years. Members did projects such as putting a huge puzzle together, showing the importance of working together given no instructions for games they were to play, showing how a person must be innovative, taking an idea and expanding it until it fits their needs. After the retreat was over. Council brought back new ideas, outlook on their responsibility to SHS. It was also agreed that re- treat should be at least an annual pil- grimage away from the pressures of society. It's spaghetti time Along with its other activities which keep memebers busy, Council holds an annual spaghetti dinner. This was the fifth year for the dinner it real- ly kept Council busy for a few hours before the football game. Cuisine fea- tured a dinner salad, spaghetti, of course, french bread and beverage, all you can eat, was once again replied to anyone who asked for sec- onds. After the dinnner, members and their parents got the task of cleaning up the kitchen and cafeteria then got to go watch the football team in action. 35 Senior Portraits With Personality HOWARD BURKERT PHOTOGRAPHY Monclova, Ohio 43542 36 Leading The Way We live in a world where change is the only constant. Technological developments are slowly changing the goals of education, roles played by education personnel, the entire instructional delivery system. Since the business of schools is preparation for the future, we must adapt to rapid technological social change by leading the next generation through the electronic class- room into the information age. Improved educational technology will make schools more productive by im- proving student outcomes at a reduced cost. However, our greatest hope for improving productiveity adapting to change is our human resources — our students, teach- ers, parents, volunteers, civic business leaders. To- gether, the human resources of schools are a powerful force for positive change. The Board of Education is proud of the cooperative effort that exists to change improve Swanton’s educational system. A cooperative spirit is, after all, mankind’s greatest technological achievement.’’ Roy e Vivian (r) No Photo Available (It, t-b) Mr. Dennis Butler — School Board Treasurer. The evening was patterned after HOMECOMING. Attendants were introduced at the basketball game. Later at the dance, the court was re-introduced and the queen was crowned. Since President Butler was in the court, the honor of the introductions fell to Vice- President Todd Yunker. Mr. Gregory J. Smith helped with the crowning of the queen. Council felt the evening was well worth the effort it took to prepare for the evening. Even though the attendance at the dance was small, those who came had a great time. The evening also featured a dance contest won by Matt McKay and Kim Raker. With any new project problems will arise. A com- munication problem prevented the Penta couple from attending. Freshman attendant Mr. Robbie Gilsdorf was unable to attend the dance so Mr. Allan Wagener stood in for him. Now that the first is over, the second will be much easier and perhaps attendance will improve. (hr. t-b) Queen Kim Raker King Jim Lambert. Junior Attendants. Miss Chris Dalton Mr. Eric Butler. It all started when a greedy young man murdered an elderly lady to obtain her jewels. Much to his surprise, she had hidden them away carefully. He searched all night until he had to leave with the dawn. A deaf servant slept through the lady's screams. Later, the man changed his name to Manningham married. Mr. Mrs. Manningham (Jennifer Nagy Mike Nixon) bought the old lady’s house. Little did Mrs. Manningham know that her husband was a murderer. When Mrs. Manningham started to become suspicious, her husband decided to give her the illusion that she was going insane. Finally, a retired inspector, played by Jared Doren, came to save the day. Inspector Rough convinced Mrs. Manningham to help him find proof of her husband’s guilt. Aided by the Manninghams’s cook, Elizabeth (Anna Phipps), they set out to get him arrested. The more the play went on, the more the audience learned of Mr. Manningham’s bad deeds. Besides murder deception, he was also a womanizer. One of the women that he was trying to seduce was the Manningham’s maid, Nancy (Kris Harp). All in all, the play was a thriller. Of course, the good guys won. Also in the cast were Peter Hopkins Jeremia Thompson. (1-r, t-b) Yah, Yah. That’s the line. Yah. exclaims Jennifer Nagy. Tammy Buehrer finishing a layout. 152 After getting off to a shaking start, the small but mightly yearbook staff pulled it off. Today is June 19, 1987 and the last pages of the 1986-87 yearbook are going in the mail!!! A first in many years. There are many people who need to be thanked for their help this year. The following people supplied pictures: Mrs. Hansharger donated Sports Banquet shots, Kris Harp Jennifer Nagy provided glossies of Angel Street, Sr Troy Walburn provided some needed wrestling shots. Thank you all. Helping with adds this year were Pam Johnson, Todd Dixon, Matt Studer. Thanks people. Without you the cost would be outrageous! Helping with needed copy were Barbara Frosch, Heidi Doren, Jared Doren, Miss Warncke. Mr. Lugwig also helped in providing team pictures. Thank you folks. Helping on layouts copy were Kella Herod, Kim Thompson, Tammy Buehrer. Thank you for you help ladies. The biggest THANK YOU must go to Jennifer Krause. Without her many of the pages would not be done. She also served as our main campus photogra- pher. You are going to be missed Jennifer. Again THANK YOU! John J. Shultz, Advisor
