SEIIIURS Ill Illllllllllllllll Those of us who knew Bob Haynes well, just coultln't believe the news of his death, Knowing him since the first grade and being around him so muchit was al- most impossible to believe him to be dead, Bob always was so much alive, he always had a new joke to tell you. After the disbelief turned to sorrow, we real- ized how close Bob was to us. The school will never be quite the same without his presence, he was always interested ineverything and he entered into each activity he undertook, with so mitch enthusiasm, Although Bob greatly enjoyed his school days, it is a tragedy that he cou1dn't graduate and turn his great energy to some other field. Bob wasa person who got along with everyonewith whom he associated, he had countless friends and he made no enemies, If there were more people like Bob in this muddled world, the earth would be a far better place in which to live, Bob was almost never sad at school, he always had a smile on hisface arid a good word for everyone, Little Bob made a greatcontribution to the lives of those who had him as a friend and he will long be remembered for his optimistic attitude. We could all do well to be more like Bob. lie has added something to the school which can never be taken away and he will always be remembered by his friends. From Swanton lli-Life ---Bill Butz I cannot and I will not say That hc is dead--he is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand l-le has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair lt needs must be since he lingers there. And you--O you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and glad return. Think of him as faring on, as dear In the Love of There as the Love of llere. Think of him still as the same I sayg lle is not dead--he is just away! -- -james Whitcomb Riley Today as I was going to Chicago from Toledo on the Chicago Pike in my new Olds 888 fsequel to the 881 I noticed a large sign pointing northward reading SWANT ON. As I was in no hurry, I decided to stop and see some of my former classmates. Entering the town, I was going 21 m.p. h. in a Z0 m. p. h.speed zone whenlwas prompt- ly stopped by the local police chief who was none other than my former classmate, Jim Hallett. Being an old friend of his made no difference, however, for I was brought be- fore another classmate of mine, Justice of the Peace Roger Flynn and was fined 515. 20 plus costs. After paying the fine, I decided to drive through my old home town. As I drove, I noticed campaign posters for the election of mayor. Gweneth Bloom, recently voted the Waitress we'd most like to be served by by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Cross-eyed Cats of which Bob Holland is president, was running on the Democratic ticket. Her opposition was Ed Brodbeck, managing editor of the nationally famous Peek magazine. Running for school board in this election was Bonnie Belcher, the famous interior dec- oratorg Perry Zeigler, the multimillionaire stock raiser, Robert Mitchell, the founder and president of the Mitchell Academy of Physical Science and Muscular Develop- ment g William Witker, the owner of the famous chain, Witker Drugs, Inc. 5 William Sperling, editor of the SWANTON ENTER- PRISE, Richard Wilson, owner of Wilson's I-laberdasheryg and Nor ene Taylor, the famous creator of the Odd Look. Among thfose running for city council were Ann Brockhoff, founder fo Brockhoff's Baby Bouncers--Singing Lullabies a spe- cialty Barbara Hallett, world famous woman lawyer, who recently wona case for the Music Critics Association of America against ex- President Trumang Pat Babos, the famous model and editor of STARE- -the women's an- swer to ESQUIRE. Joseph Winterfeld, owner of the Winterfeld Trucking Co. 9 Pat Garry, owner and operator of the l05th Avenue Beauty Sa1on : Jim Iler, the unemployed fat presentl bachelorg and Mrs. Thomas Mrocz- 32 kowski, the former Marynette Myers and 2.nd grade teacher at Swanton Grade School, and Mrs. Joyce McGhee the former Joyce Leonard and woman evangalist and wife of Bill McGhee, the All-American lst team pocket billiards player for BIT fBrailey In- stitute of Technologyl. Thenl decided to go over to the school to see some more friends of mine who were teachers. As I walked into the office, I asked Superintendent Dick Jacquot who was the principal, and he said Bill Jones was and that he was in his office. I went to the principal's office thinking thatl ought to surprise Bill by walking in on him without knocking. I did that and asl opened the door, I saw his sec- retary, Mag Blayz, perched onhis knee tak - ing dictation. As soon as they saw me, they both became very red and Mag managed to say a meek, Hello , before running out of the office. From Bill I found out that the school was staffed by former classmates and that three of the teachers and Mag belong to The Sinister Spinsters of Swanton, a group created to preserve the fine art of spinster- ing. Theyare, Miss JoanStapleton, lst grade teacherg Miss Judy Mossing, 5th grade teach- erg and Miss Mary Bratton, the 7th grade teacher. Mrs. Betty Holland, formerly Bet- ty Niner, is the 3rd grade teacherg Miss Janet Glanz is the Shorthand and Account- ing teacherg Mrs. Jean Butz, formerly Jean Brodbeck, is the 8th grade teacher, Gaython Eaton was the Water Commissioner of Swan- ton besides being Industrial Arts Teacher and Basketball Coach. Paul Adams is the American and World History teacher, but is amilkman in the wee hours of the morning. Miss Peggy Ball is the English and Latin teacher Mrs. Fay Bartlett, formerly Fay Sutherland, is the voice and music teacher. Darolyn Olmstead is the Hpme Economics teacher and official referee of the girls' in- tramural games. Viola Mines is the math teacher. Pat Smith is coach of Swanton's mighty Bulldogs, undefeated, untied, and un- scored upon in 38 straight football games. His assistant is Paul Kreuz. I then left Bill and walked down town in order to see the new buildings and businesses in Swanton. On the first building I noticed a large sign reading Butz and Lingenfelter-- Physician and Mortician--If one of us can't help you, the other one certainly can. Evidently they have a very profitable busi- ness, for there were two helicopters parked on the roof. On the outskirts of town, there is a new motel being builtby Shirley and Marvin Geiser. Across the streetfrom this is The Sparrow Club, a famous nite club owned and operated jointly by Duane Durr and Tom Bollinger. The main attractions there are Sue Rolen, the singing waitress, and June Mason, the warbling hatcheck girl. As I walked farther downtown, I noticed a large neon sign reading M and K Smoke Shop and Billiard Academy--With every car - ton of cigarettes a free booklet, Tips for Pool'L writtenby Ken Mossing. This is run by Ken Mossing and Frank Kreuz. Kenny takes care of the smoke shop while Frank racks the balls for the pool room. Next to the Billiard Academy is Lloyd's Jewelry Store and the 138th National Bank, the Pres- ident of which is Bob Hahn. His first Vice- President in charge of loans is Glen Buck- enmeyer. The Znd Vice-President, who is teller, is Bill Stuckey, whose secretary is his wife Lois fFranklinJ. Next to the Bank is the B G: G Hat Shop--run jointly by Hattie BrownandBertha Garner. Across thestreet from the hat shop is Cook's Art Shop, runby Jim Cook, the designer of the new school addition, andhis wife, Marilyn fKreuzJ. Next to the Art Shop is the Kroger Supermarket, managed by Robert Camp and his assistant, Jim Jones, Mrs. Jones, formerlyCarolyn Kreuz, is head cashier. Working at the Kroger Store as head butcher is Tom Mrocz- kowski. Directly across the street from Kroger's is the A 8: P Supermarket, managed by George Hayden. Next door to the A 8: P is Nowoweijeki's Hardware run by Mr. and Mm. Daniel Now- oweikski fMa.ry Lou Bushongl. Next door to the Hardware is the Storeholder Feed Store -- Hayseed a Specialty, run by Dallas Storeholder. Across the street I noticed a large neon sign reading, Doren's Music Shop --Record and Sheet Music, Accordian Les- sons, Repairing Accordians a specialty-- Musical Instruments of all kinds. Evidently it was run by Eugene Doren for I saw him outside showing his ace clerk, Carl Weiss, how to wash the windows. Next to the Music Store, I noticed a familiar sign. This one consisting of three balls and on the window was printed, Yager's Hock Shop--New and Used Articles bought and Sold , run by Leo Yager. At the end of Main Street, I noticed a new building and the sign on it read-- Weis- weber Lanes--Open Bowling on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays--lessons 10 a.m.on Saturdays. The bowling alleys owned and managed by Wyloden Weisweber, national ladies singles champ who bowled three con- secutive 300 games in tournament competi- tion. The head pin boy and league bowling supervisor is Calvin Lehman. Above the bowling alleys is the main office of the L. H. A. A. QI..onely Hearts Association pf Americaj of which Nancy Whaley is pres- ident and founder. I then noticed an orange and chartreuse colored car go by. Painted on the door of the car was Poorman's Driv- ing School -- Guaranteed to know how to drive after our 38 easy lessons or we will give you another complete course free. Betty was teaching Madeline Black, author of Easy Ways to Earn More Credits for G. A. A. , how to drive, but evidently she wasn't learning too well for she crashed into a large signwhich advertised the newmovie, Good- morning Irene in which Irene Twigg, the only Irene that said goodnight, is the star. Playing opposite Irene as the villain in the all-girl movie is the Bewitching Blonde --Stella Span who is a referee for women's wrestling matches in her spare time. Re- cently Stella refereed the women's champ- ionship of the world. In the match, Archie Mae Wells successfully defended her title against Mauling Marynette Mroczkowski, one of the teachers at Swanton. Iwalked a- round town some more, then I looked at my watch, it was later than I thought for I had only 45 minutes to get to Chicago in time for a conference but I didn't worry too much for I was confident I could get there in my 888 so I left Swanton and continued to Chicago. 33 457 --f Sandra rmaganian il J s ef- Charles Blayz P 5 A1 yt 'L 4 X. The purpose ofthe club is to teach the interested students of Swan- ton High the fundamentals of good photo- graphy. Requirements for membership are that the individual must have aninterest in photography, own a camera, and be an upper classman. It is considered as one of the bestor- ganizations in the school. One of the rea- sons it is exceptionally good is because of the sponsorship of Mr. Daniels. Mr. Daniels has been the sponsor of this club for the last six years. O The club has a completely furnished dark room with equipment necessary to develop, print, and enlarge pictures. Last year the Photo club staged a comedy tofor the student bodywhich was a great success. It delighted the students and proved that the members can act as well as they can take pictures. At this assembly they also presented the Photo Queen of 1950, Betty Niner with her five attendants! Norene Taylor, Patricia Babos, Doris Degenfelder, Sue Rolen, and Star Tansel. The annual picnic which is heldeach May is also an event greatly anticipated by members of the club. The club maintains equipment valued at approximately SB 150 which is used by al- most all members of the club. The principal money-raising project is selling milk every noon. This, with club dues of fifty cents per year, contributes to fact that the Photography Club is one of the most prosperous organizations in school. This will be quite a task but since Swanton has the largest membership in their team since the organization of track, Swanton is sure to give Delta and anyone else in the county a real battle. The team is also looking forward to racking up some points in their other meets such as the Devilbis Relays and the Maumee In- vitational. These two meets will be very trying for many of the larger schools have the edge on S.H.S. and S.H.S. must make up for it in some other way. Perhaps this will be done in spirit for the team so far has been very high in morale. The mainstays of this years team will be Bill Butz, Gay- thon Eaton, Carl Buehrer, Larry Dunbar, Jim Mason, Lou Pilliod, Jim Thompson, and Dave Peters. Eaton, county high jump champ last year, will also be one of our desk men. Bill Butz and Jim Thompson will be in on the dash. Butz, too, is the teams leading broad jumper. Pilliod, Buehrer, Dunbar, and Peters will be the distance runners. Mason will lead the pole vaulters and weight men. New found discoveries this year are George Johnson and Bruce Vaughan. Johnson showed that he is aboy tobe watched in the dashes by easily licking Butz, one of the fastest last year. Vaughan proved to be a fine discus thrower by heaving it 91 feet his second day out. If you don't already know the coaches, they are Mr. Eaton and Mr. Verduin. Mr. Verduin helped a great deal this year by leading the boys through exercises and really whipping them into shape.
