To seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashiong to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not riehg to study hard. think quietly, talk gently, act frankly, to listen lo stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heartg to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and uncon- scious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. William Henry Channing wrote it. Margaret Dekle lives it. LOTT WHITTEN BISHOP- 1 894- 1 958 MELVIN BRUCE AULT- 1927-1958 IN MEMORIAM WILLIAM OWEN PHILLIPS 1906-1958 Our year began with sadness, with a sense of loss of friends old and new. Our beloved Cotmty School Superintendent William Owen Phillips who led us through fourteen and one-half years with devoted service was killed in a tragic accident. Death ended long years of membership on the Emanuel Colmty Board of Education for Lott Whitten Bishop. Prior to the opening of the Fall semester, Melvin Bruce Ault, newly elected band director, lost his life .in an auto- bile accident shortly after coming to Swainsboro to live. He is so much a part of our high school days we could not reminisce without recalling- "The Lookl' "Now, boys and girls, remember you are representatives of Swainsboro High Schoolv "We're just as proud of you as if you'd won" "Govern yourselves accordingly" '6Let's give them a big hand" "I do appreciate the boys and girls of Swainsboro High Schoolf' He gave us all a few rough moments, but the good times outnumbered the bad, and in retrospect we realize the benefits gained from a democratic administration. Mrs. Bishop made life brighter for all of us. If the call to the office were had news, she sympathized with us. If it were good news, she rejoiced with us. She used a lot of quiet diplomacy to keep us all running smoothly-students, faculty, and administration! MRS. W. A. BISHOP Secretary AS SCHOOL BEGINS . . .
