Dedication It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we the Class of 1 953, dedicate this issue of the Exitus to Mr. Alliston C. Wetherell and Mr, Wilho Frigard, who have done much to make our dreams come true. 1 2 Editorial We, the Class of 1953, have now completed our high school educa- tion. We must, however, not think of it as completed. Education of the individual is a life process and over its road one will encounter many hardships as well as many pleasant and satisfying experiences. Be- cause of the former we must not become embittered toward society. To the latter we ought to be most thankful because our lot for the most part, “has fallen in pleasant pastures beside the still waters.’’ The past four years have given us many opportunities to develop our personalities in proportion to our varying abilities. Let us go for- ward, ever mindful, that we can be more worthy of our own life if we put into practice the teachings we have learned in school. May we never forget that the essential “good’’ of an individual is unselfishness for we must believe, “that he who lives for self only is of all men most miserable.’’ Another teaching we should not forget is that we must be thinking citizens to the end that each may weigh and consider the ques- tions of the day and then render decisions free from bias or prejudice. Although the seeds of loyalty and devotion to God, country and home have been taught to us it is up to each one to nurture such more fully so that we may pass on to future generations those principles of honesty, justice and tolerance which have played so important a part in our American way of life. May the richness of life attend your pathway, overshadowed, I hope, by pleasant memories of friendships made at Sutton Memorial High. Faculty FRONT ROW: MRS. MARIAN MARIS English B. A. Univ. of Conn. Evelyn Rivernider 15 Class History History is a systematic and exact account of events, even from their very beginnings. Now, it would be impossible to relate all that this illus- trious Class of ’53 has done but we shall try to tell you of the most im- portant happenings of our four years here at Sutton High School. We began as a class of thirty-seven and although large in number, we appeared small in comparison with the upperclassmen. We were de- termined to show them differently and--we have. We should like to have them back here today to see the change of character of that Freshman raw material, compared to the finished product that is here today. The class elected Raymond Smith as President; Sylvia Desjourdy, Vice-President; Marilyn Swart, Secretary; and Hazel Whittier, Treasurer. The greater part of that first year was spent in getting acquainted with the other classes. A few of us ventured to take part in the sports S. H. S. had to offer. The social life of the school appealed to many of us and we always were willing to attend the school functions, and at the Valen- tine Ball, presented by the Senior Class, our classmate, Marcia Bjork, was crowned Queen of the Ball. As Sophomores we were fortunate to enter the new Sutton Memorial School having Miss Anne L. Beechler as our class advisor and homeroom teacher, who we could look to for guidance and assistance. Class officers were once again elected. Sylvia Desjourdy, President; Stanley Piatczyc, Vice-President; Gale Johnson, Secretary; and Germaine Elie, Treasurer. We continued to take an active part in school athletics and the social life. In September, 1951, knowing that one half of our high school course had been completed we returned as Juniors feeling that we had a year of 16 ease ahead of us, for now we were really upperclassmen. Ronald Gibson was elected President; Hazel Whittier, Vice-President; Marcia Bjork, Secretary; and Joyce Flanagan, Treasurer. Once again one of our classmates, Marilyn Swart, was crowned Queen of the Valentine Ball. During the end of the year Joyce Flanagan, selected by the Dudley Gendron Post of Wilkins onville and Jane Cote by the John Mateychuck Post of Manchaug, attended Girls’ State in Bridgewater. Also at the graduation exercises of the Class of ’52 Phyllis Marble was present- ed the D. A. R. History Award. When we returned to school in September 1952 we proudly assumed the role of Seniors. Class elections were held immediately. Ronald Gibson was to be our President; Harlan Goodwin, Vice-President; Carol Johnson, Secretary; and Hazel Whittier, Treasurer. Needless to say our class soon became engrossed in an effort to raise money for our trip to Washington, D. C. and New York. Our first event of great importance was the Senior Supper. This annual supper took a great deal of preparation. We soon became experts in the fine art of killing and cleaning chickens. On the appointed Saturday morning we peeled and cooked vegetables, tiring ourselves before it actu- ally took place. However, it was certainly worth everyone’s effort and it proved very successful. Our next event was the presentation of our play “REST ASSURED’’, which proved very successful through the tireless direction of Miss Beechler . It was shortly after the play when Miss Beechler left our teaching faculty that the responsibility of the Seniors was taken over by Mr. Schwab. The Valentine Ball was presented on February 14, 1953. The effects 17 of the cupids and hearts were quite appropriate for this special night. So the Class of ’53 has made its records in the annals of history. We are proud of the work we have done together, and though our happy high school years are coming to an end, we are not through learning. This is only the beginning of better things. Here, under the guidance of our ever genial and sympathetic teachers and principal, we have built the foundation for what we may do in the years that lie ahead. There can be no doubt that we shall go on remembering what Sutton has given to us, thus showing our appreciation for what we have acquired from our parents, our faculty, our friends, and S. H. S. Gale Johnson Charlene Gravelin ; ' ' ] The Senior Play, ‘‘Rest Assured,” under the outstanding direction of Miss Anne L,. Beechler was presented November 15, 1952. Through much excitement and nervousness we stood backstage waiting for the thrilling moment which would make us actors for a night. We wish to express sincere appreciation to all those who co-operated in making it a huge success. 19 Memories Initiation. . .Old SHS. . .Sullie. . .Evelyn and Denny. . .Jane and Fred. . .Trigger. . . Editor and Art Director, Danny Fisher ! I felt pretty proud to know that he had been in my graduating class back at Sutton High. He had been successful in life and that set me to wonder- ing about my other classmates. The answer? ? a renuion! First, I called Danny and told him how I had gotten the idea. He im- mediately liked the idea and promised to bring along another classmate, Sylvia Desjourdy. Much to my surprise she was head of the reporting department on Danny’s staff and doing nicely. A frequent contribution to the Science section of the same magazine was Howard Watson. He spent much of his time working on scientific problems. The next group of girls was easy to contact. All were doing out- standing work at leading hospitals in the country. Carol Johnson was head nurse at the Children’s Hospital in Boston and doing a splendid job. Phyllis Marble was a laboratory technician at the newly established Sutton Memorial Hospital. The head secretary and receptionist at this same hospital was Marcia Bjork who practiced some nursing in her spare time. The girls were glad for the chance to see all their old friends so they all set out in Marcia’s new Cadillac. Finding George Thibodeau was easy, as he had recently put the fin- ishing touches on my modern ranch home. Billy Chase was his able as- sistant doing the cabinet work. Their Modern Home Construction Com- pany was nationally known. Not far away at Springfield College was Hazel Whittier. I remem- bered how much she liked sports so it would be no surprise to her class- mates when they learned her job was head physical education instructor at the college. Our boy athlete in the Class of ’53, Lanny Goodwin, was playing professional basketball with the Celtics. By writing to WBZ-TV, I got in touch with Vera Eaton. She was delighted at the opportunity to take a vacation from her busy schedule of dance lessons on TV and come to our reunion. Her “Vera” studios were outstanding for their fin e job in teaching children to dance. Two of the secretaries at the studio were Marilyn Swart and Janet Lawrence, also eager to come. Charlene Gravelin, the wealthy wife of a rancher who lived in W yoming, came in her new station wagon. Her tan and photos of her two beautiful children were admired by Ronnie Gibson. Ronnie enjoyed his job as an electrical engineer at General Motors Corporation. On the way Charlene picked up Evelyn Rivernider who had left her three sons with her husband while she made the trip. From there they went to the airport in Worcester to meet Gale Johnson. Gale was taking time out from her modeling duties to be with the class again. Because her husband was overseas and wouldn’t be able to take care of her two children, she left them at her mother’s house. Meanwhile they had stopped at Raymond Smith’s Garage and Used Car Lot in Sutton to see if he would like to ride with them. He accepted and they all set out for Sutton High where they were to meet the other mem- bers of the class. Joan and I? ? ? Well, I am very happily married with a part time secretarial job. Joan is a head nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital and very happy with her work. Having everyone here for a reunion was a splendid idea. It is sure nice seeing everyone again and talking over old times. I’m sure our re- union is the best ever. Qirls’ Sports This past season has proved to be one of great significance. Both teams went undefeated. Incidentally the last time Sutton went undefeated was back in 1947. Along about the first week in December we elected Marcia Bjork, manager and Judith Freeland assistant manager. Our co-captains elected for the 1952-53 season were: Hazel Whittier and Alice Szewerenka. Our first six forwards, Alice Szewerenka, Genevieve Szewerenka, Hazel Whittier, Rena Zuidema, Gail Mathewson and Vesta Helgeson did a tremendous job rebounding and outscoring the opposing teams. Probably the most important girls’ were those never give in guards who did such a terrific job stopping the opposing forwards from scoring. Those who played were: Jane Cote, Loretta Amour, Alyse Hoover, Eliz abeth Smith, Beverly Tancrell and Sylvia Watson. Individual scores were as follows: Hazel Whittier 286 Genevieve Szewerenka 150 Alice Szewerenka 87 Rena Zuidema 35 Gail Mathewson 28 Vesta Helgeson 11. 36 , v- , Qame Summaries SUTTON 62 ALUMNI 10 SUTTON 43 MILLBUR Y 20 SUTTON 45 NORTHBRIDGE 26 SUTTON 44 BROOKFIELD 25 SUTTON 31 N. Boys’ Sports The 1952-53 basketball season started for Sutton High near the end of October. Practice began at that time under the leadership of “coach” Donald Sabolinski. Sutton’s hopes were high this season for we had four of our starting five back from the previous year. After scrimmages with Westboro, Bellingham, Northbridge and Clark University J. V’s, twelve men were chosen to fill the varsity squad. Four Seniors selected were: Gibson, (0-4j a.aLACu L Goodwin, Fisher and Chase. Junior s : A Craw , Grandone, Lavallee, Smith and Moore. Sopho- mores: Judson and Whittier. There were many thrilling, hardfought games which added extra enjoyment for our many loyal followers we were so fortunate in having. The victories over North Brookfield and Brookfield High schools were some of the timely wins that enabled the Sutton High Team to win the Western Worcester County League Championship. The league trophy and a consolation trophy from the Clark University Tournament are two of the accomplishments for which the team fought hard to maintain.
