J With Blaine Corder at the helm for his second consecutive year, and also the second year for the band organization, the Sutton High School band participated in the West Virginia state band festival at Huntington, after earning this privilege by receiving a Superior rating at the Region XI festival held at Glenville. Also in its second year is the chorus, which participated in all band concerts and presented musical programs in the local churches and civic organizations. The chorus received much praise and com- mendation for its splendid work. For the first time this year the music department presented two director's awards and two national Arion Foundation awards for band and chorus work. Barbara Skidmore received one of the di- rector's awards for the fine job she did as drum majorette. The other director's award went to Gene Evans who served as concert master. Recipient of the Arion Foundation award for chorus was Mary Dyer who served as accompanist. The Arion award for band was presented to Jim Byrne, the student conductor. The new music department addition, shown on the preceding page, was completed and put in use at the beginning of the school year. The new department contains, in addition to the main rehear- sal room, practice rooms and facilities for the storage of music, in- struments, and uniforms. 4-4
