SUSQUEHANNOCK HIGH SCHO GLEN ROCK, PA 17327 Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we forget to take the time to pause and reflect: on the world around us, on ourselves, on the past, and on the future. We get so caught up in day-to-day living that we forget why we are here. So when the school year has ended and the books have all been closed, we stop and wonder, Where did it all go?” And when that time comes, the CALUMET will supply the answers and the memories. A great effort went into this book and it is our hope that a great book came out. While it is not perfect by any means, we hope the CALUMET has captured the highlights of your school year, so that in years to come you TABLE OF CONTENTS HEY’RE OFF! administration faculty underclassmen PICKING UP STEAM fall sports organizations ROLLING ALONG winter sports activities THE HOME STRETCH spring sports activities WE'VE MADE IT! sr. portraits sr. activities FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS advertisements patrons 4 5 7 8 9 WHERE YA GOIN’? 10 11 13 16 _r ADMINISTRATION UPPER LEFT: Dr. Hupper, District Superintendent UPPER RIGHT: Mr. Murphy, Assistant Superintendent BOTTOM: Row 1: Mrs. Warner, Dr. Hupper’s Secretary. Decisions ranging from scheduling their courses to deciding on a career or choosing a college. At Susquehannock we have a fine guidance department always ready to help with our decisions, as well as other problems that we may have. Mr. Beily and Mrs. Baer are always available to listen and offer guidance, or just a smile and an encouraging word. Mrs. Wertz, the Guidance Secre- tary, keeps things organized and running smoothly. Whether it be in Spanish class, directing the plays, at the Student Council concession stand, or decorating for the prom, few can compare with Mr. Ruth when it comes to time and ef- fort given to Susquehannock and to its students. For those of you that have not had the op- portunity to appreciate Mr. Ruth, you certainly will before your days at SHS are over. We would just like to take this time for something long over- due: From all of us, “Thank you, Mr. Ruth!” 34 THEIR FIRST IMPRESSION . . . Each September, another group of new- comers enters the school for the start of their high school career. These fresh- men are filled with excitement and anticipation of the upcoming year. They may also be a bit unsure and frightened, but as the year progresses, the ninth graders become better acquainted with the teachers, their schedules, and the building itself, and they discover that the awesome upperclassmen aren’t as awesome as they seem. Whether it is the theme for a Homecoming Float or the Prom, the choice of our senior proofs, or making some decisions concerning our future, each one is a challenge. As we meet these challenges, more are placed before us as our senior year approaches and graduation becomes a reality. BOTTOM RIGHT: Class Advisor, Mr. Ruth. Row 1: E. Sack. L. Banihashemi. P. Aiken. Through this organi- zation, students have a voice in what goes on in our high school. The Student Council coordinates many worthwhile events throughout the year and works to raise money for school improvements and other important things. A group of fine students comprise the student council under the supervision of Mr. Ruth and the job they do is one appreciated by all at Susquehannock. UPPER RIGHT: STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: T. The Marching Warriors begin early in August to prepare for their halftime and pre- game performances dur- ing football season. Writ- ten by students under the supervision of Mr. Steger. the shows incorporate popular music as well as show tunes with compli- cated marching drills. The band is also an important part of pep rallies where they add their spirit and enthusiasm. The band marches in several parades throughout the year and takes a trip every spring. A concentrated training camp was held in the heat of the summer in order to prepare the team for its early-starting season. Though the team struggled through most of the season with injuries and other setbacks, the players certainly finished the season with a bang. A 66-6 victory over Eastern left the Senior members of the team with many fond memories of their last high school football game. In addi- tion to their vital role at sporting events, the cheer- leaders do a great job of organizing pep assemblies. They have come up with some unique ideas, such as the awarding of the spirit stick to the class that dis- plays the most zeal. The squads are always inventing new cheers and adapting new pom-pom routines. This year’s favorite is the routine in which the cheer- leaders spell W-A-R-R-l-O-R-S with their pom-poms. Whatever the outcome of the game, we can always look to our cheerleaders to keep the faith and pride alive. BOTTOM RIGHT: VARSITY CO-CAPTAINS: Row 1: M Romoser. Row 2: J. Pearson. VARSITY: Row 1: B. Spirit Week was a time for every student to show his spirit by doing things such as wearing a tie, dressing up, or wear- ing red and white. Just as in other years, a hall decoration contest was held. The Seniors captured first place with the winning theme, “Who Shot the Mustangs?” At the pep rally before the football game, spirits soared high and keyed the players up for their game with South Western. Though we did not win, the game was still enjoyed by all. Entertainment at halftime included the Marching Warriors, introduction of the Homecoming candidates, and the dis- play of the Homecoming floats. Reading the Courier brings a pleasant break to our daily routine and teachers as well as students appre- ciate the effort put forth by the Courier Staff. After much rehearsal and a few tense moments at practice, the cast came through with a performance which was entertaining and enjoyable to all who saw it. Focusing on the happenings in a present day high school, the play proved to be realistic yet witty. Mr. Ruth can once again be proud of his efforts with the class plays. There were many exciting moments for the spectators this past year during the basket- ball season. The varsity team fought its way to the top and the junior varsity team was never far behind. Under the coaching direc- tion of Mr. Rynearson and Mr. Trimmer, the teams played with great enthusiasm and won many games. The highlight of the season was our spectacular game with York Catholic. Many fans turned out to cheer on the teams. Although we didn’t finish districts, just mak- ing it as far as we did was an accomplish- ment. The student body is very proud of our Warriors! Two males joined an already great varsity squad. This makes our school the only one in York County to have males on the squad. They added their spirit and en- thusiasm and will long be remembered by the students of Susquehannock. All through the season, the cheerleaders worked hard to boost spirit and lead the fans in cheering for our teams. The pep rallies that they organized were said to be some of the best that our school has ever had. The cheerleaders did their job well and spirit ran so high that an alum- nus of Susquehannock was prompted to write a letter to a local newspaper praising us for our spirit. Way to go cheerleaders! The play was a comedy about the lives of a preacher and his family and the extra pressure put on them because of his job. Under the direction of Mr. Ruth, the cast of the play worked very hard to prepare their production. This year the cast did not have as much time as usual to prepare, but nevertheless, they did an excellent job. Three students came to join our lives and share the experiences of SHS. Some of the many events AFS sponsored included cupcake day, the turkey supper, and the AFS King and Queen contest followed by an evening of dancing in the SHS gym. The advisors, Mrs. Baer, (lower left), Mr. Ruth and Miss Krumrine (lower right), helped us through all those fund raising rough spots. We wish to thank them for their pa- tience and guidance. The four AFS officers (upper right) are Jean Hemminger. Ginny Myers, Ginger Lentz, and Derek Lasher. They provided outstanding leader- ship for the club. ■ 106 SENIOR AND JUNIOR AFS MEMBERS: Row 1: L. Wysocki, S. Crumley, C. Wacquez, K. Berlin (left to right). Row 2: (left to right) L. Bare. M. Students opened their homes and hearts to students from around the county and all over the world. We were treated to an interna- tional talent show (op- posite page) while our guests had other fun activities scheduled just for them. 109 DANCIN’ FOR DOLLARS As tradition dictates, the AFS weekend draws to a foot-tapping close with a dance on Saturday night. While the dance is held for the fun of all, its purpose is also to raise money for the AFS program. Elected can- didates from each grade turn in col- lected donations and the winners are announced at the dance. UPPER RIGHT: AFS King and Queen Mark Fair and Jan Pearson share a special dance. Monica’s smiles added greatly to the junior class and we hope she enjoyed her stay here in Pennsylvania. in SHYNESS AND SMILES Evidently, Al Rivera’s favorite thing in America is the food. He gained quite a few pounds, although you’d never know it. It was easy to tell when Al was sick because he didn’t want to eat his lunch! Al also enjoys music and wat- ching television. We began as a collection of very different individuals, all striving and reaching in separate directions. As the school years progressed, we became a class and began to work together, helping each other to reach the one goal we all share — graduation. We are a unique class, as is every class at Susquehan- nock. We have our weaknesses and many, many strong points. We realize that our high school has been an invaluable part of our educa- tion and life, but we hope that our class has contributed something to the school as well. The class of 1981 has experienced sorrow in the loss of our classmate, Dave Chittum. Let us learn from his premature death to appreciate life, to fully develop our potential, to always be honest and strive to make the best out of everything we wish to do. 155 THE CLASS OF 1981 SENIORS VS. FACULTY As an added attraction for the last week of school, senior basketball players took on the faculty members in an ex- citing and fun-filled game. LOWER LEFT: Mr. Miller guards Eric Gumpricht. LOWER RIGHT: Rob Rinehart attempts to get the ball from Mr. Rynearson. 157 AT LAST! Then Yee-ha! The class of ’81 was on its own. UPPER RIGHT: We proudly switched our tassels. LOWER LEFT: Class President Mark Miller addresses the group. LOWER RIGHT: Deb Capel receives her diploma. OPPOSITE PAGE: UPPER LEFT: Bonny Carroll and Quincy Russell share the mo- ment. UPPER RIGHT: Al's expression mirrors all our feelings. LOWER LEFT: Musical seniors T. Winemiller, L. Sprenkle. B. UPPER RIGHT: Lisa Ford contemplates the future. LOWER LEFT: Mr. Linnane awards Lisa Dobrosky the Salutatorian’s medal. LOWER RIGHT: The class of 1981: reminiscing and speculating. 160 4! With every man, woman and child using the equivalent of a 100-foot tree every year — for building materials, paper and packaging — it takes dedicated people to make sure our forest resource is keeping pace. In our High Yield Forestry, our people are involved in research; land preparation; forest management; protection from insects, disease and fire; and harvesting and manufacturing. Concern for wildlife and forest recreation are important too. And our people are coming up with better ways to harvest the wood fiber and use it for new products, so our renewable resource goes further than before.
