Let us follow several students and relive our joyous years at SHS. Cheering the team to victory, sweating over a difficult test, faithfully doing home work-are only a small portion of the meritorious accomplishments of the students of SHS. The average student in addition to meeting scholastic requirements, finds time to participate in a diversity of activities from working in the library to participating in strenuous sports. The students are also willing to partic- ipate in the planning and the organizing of clubs, social affairs, and events staged for the benefit of their classes and other individuals. Without hesitation and with sincere respect to you the students, we, the 1960 Calumet Staff, take great pl-easure in dedicating this yearbook to you. May it always remind you of your fruitful years at SHS. FFICE Administration Us ' 5 , Board of Education Members of the Board conduct business Five men from each of the six districts of the Southern joint School System carry the responsibility of running the jointure efficiently. All important items are brought before them for discussion and wise decisions. Included in the school board's activities are the tasks of setting up the budget and determining bus routes for the six schools. They also approve any administrations plans and building plans. Election of teachers comes under their category. A Board Officers Mr. junior Day, Vice Presidentg Mr. William Kapp, Treasurerg Mrs. Dorothy Panzarella, Secretaryg Mr. Paul Shepperd, President. Social Studies To learn of the past and of present conditions is the purpose of the Social Studies Courses. Those offered are Eu- ropean, American, and World History, Problems of Democracy, and Geography. Social Studies grant us the opportunity to learn about the governments in other countries, and of their way of life. It also helps us understand and enjoy our heritage. 8 Mr. Hamme instructs students STANDING: Mr. Robert Cox, Mr. Sydney Ehrhart. SEATED: Mrs. Dorothy Hollahan, Mrs. Sarah Graham. Guidance Guiding students through their high school years, recording grades, and inter- viewing seniors are a few of the jobs of the guidance department. Guidance teach- ers are available to the students for coun- seling and assisting at any time. These faculty members encourage stu- dents to further their education and to plan for their future careers. The librarian lends assistance in find- ing books and references. English Ain't ain't no word is one of the many things the English teachers strive to teach their students. Pupils are informed in the proper use of grammar as well as in great literary works. Another division of the English depart- ment is the journalism classes. Students learn the correct skills of Writing. In tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades students are introduced to Julius Cae- sar,', Macbeth, and Hamlet 9 Mr. Robert Zigler, Miss Nancy Boyle, and Mr. Robert McCoy. Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education Through the tireless efforts of the Physical Education and Driver Education departments, Susquehannock's students learn the skills of applying good sports- manship. Senior High Students are well informed in the art of operating an automobile and obeying the traffic laws in Driver Edu- cation. Physical Education teachers instruct both boys and girls in sports and encour- age participation on the school's athletic teams. Boys practice gymnastics. Home Economics Both Junior and Senior high students are instructed in the fundamental princi- ples of homemaking. Under the guidance of the Home Eco- nomics' teachers, students are shown the proper methods to acquire skill in cook- ing, sewing, and managing the home. Beginning with a simple apron, they master the skill of sewing until they have completed a dress. In cooking they learn to make everything from a biscuit to a full course meal. Modern appliances are available to all Home Ec. classes. These experiences prepare the students as future homemakers. Nurse Safeguarding the health of the stu- dents is the aim of nurses, Mrs. Margaret Anderson and Mrs. Loretta Rappolt. In the grades seven, nine, and eleven, phys- ical examinations are conducted by Dr. Remley with the assistance of the nurses. Hearing and vision tests are given also. Mrs. Anderson is available to any stu- dent who needs medical attention. Mrs, Teresa Black and Mrs. Henrietta Wilt. Nurse-Mrs. Margaret Anderson. I I M Science Experiments, test tubes and chemicals are the components of the science depart- ment. Under the direction of Mr. Stermer, Mr. Wagner, and Mr. Zeilman, students learn to conduct experiments, handle chemicals, and study the aspects of the physical world. Chemistry, biology, and physics are the three courses offered to senior high stu- dents. There are general science classes for the junior high classes. Mr. Curtis Stermer, Mr. Melvin Wagner, and Mr. Melvin Zeilman. Foreign Languages Latin, French, and Spanish are the foreign languages which are offered. A student who takes one of these languages increases his understand- ing of the ways and customs of the people around him. In the eighth grade students are offered a chance to decide which language they like by taking a Gen- eral Language Course. Each lan- guage is taught for a period of nine weeks. In the shop they work on projects of wood, metal, and plastic. The boys also learn mechanical drawing and lettering. Boys taking the Agriculture Course grow crops and work with farm machin- ery. They also study science and other subjects dealing with agriculture. Mr. Russell Hare and Mr. Lowell Wallace Walter Fourhman, Robert Hildebrand, and Aaron Amspacher repair the cornplanter. Mr. Oscar Snyder, Mr. Paul Ricker, Mr. William Wolf, and Mr. Frank Baker. Mr. Charles Miller heads the Art Department. Mathematics Mathematics is fast becoming one of the most important subjects being taught in school because it is the basis for under- standing. With the ever increasing need for engineers and scientists, a thorough knowledge of all phases of mathematics is necessary. Susquehannock prepares its students by requiring courses in elementary mathe- matics for junior high students. Senior high students are offered the higher math, including Algebra, Geometry and Trigo- nometry. Art Art is one of the oldest means of com- munication. Through it we have learned many things about our ancestors. Mr. Charles Miller, head of the Art Department, patiently instructs students in the proficiency of art. His junior high artists learn to enlarge pictures, draw likenesses of models, and paint with water colors. More advanced projects are assigned to older students. They make masks, cor- sages, and figurines. Several artists partic- ipated in poster contests and won awards. Music Students who enjoy singing or playing an instrument are encouraged to partici- pate in the music program, consisting of the band, orchestra, and choral group. The Music Department provides enter- tainment for assemblies and special pro- grams. The students may take part in the music festivals held every year by the county, district, and state, thus affording opportunity to visit more of Pennsylvania's schools. Business Students in this department are trained for future careers in the business world. Included in the curricula of this de- partment are typing, bookkeeping, short- hand, clerical and office practice, busi- ness English, and business arithmetic. Students are granted an opportunity to put their studies into actual practice through work in the student store and the task of selling lunch tickets. They also help in keeping school records.
