In vain we build the world unless The builder also grows. -Edwin Markham Today we follow, tomorrow we shall build the world! However, in order to build, we ourselves must be properly constructed. Everywhere can be found the materials for construction, waiting for us to realize and use them. Whether we build a mansion or a bungalow makes no difference, as long as it is constructed of solid materials . . . materials of knowledge and education held together by truth and respect. The Construction of Tomorrow's Builders . . . that is the theme for the Calumet of 1955. Throughout the pages of this book you will find recorded the tools, materials and activities that went into the construction of us all. May we never forget them, for they are the foundation on which we as builders shall continue to grow! -Nancy Gaeckler and Bill Gantz, Co-Editors i DEDICATED TO: vi-i BOWNER pl. MR- R To build and maintain an institution of learning that will pro- mote high standards and ideals has been the aim of Mr. Ralph A. Bortner, principal of Susquehannock High School. His unceasing effort to guide and prepare us for future leadership in the world of tomorrow has proved invaluable to us. Therefore, we, the Calumet staff of 1955, take pleasure in dedicating this volume of memories to our worthy principal, Mr. Bortner. 414 5C fif- 1 '-H424-4. f 4 RA 1- M ---i-,..i-- - - f-VY, , X .14-,l.-- f J 1 iL4'l!:-,-42 r J ,A.f:,.... MUTCH Supervising Principal Ephrata High School A.B., Lebanon Valley College M.Ed., Temple University You have served part of your apprenticeship as builders in the Susquehannock School. Your teachers, parents, guardians and pastors have been trying to help you develop and build character throughout these years, as well as well-educated children. Grad- uation is a time for new thoughts and purposes and for renewing lagging interests. BUILD lt is so difficult to build- So easy to tear down- A reputation or concern Of merited renown. So build and boost and benefit Just everything you can- Because the fellow who tears down ls not a friend of man. -Selected ADMlNlS No building is stronger than its founda- tion, as was told us so long ago by the Great Teacher in His story of the two houses, one built upon sand, the other upon rock. You students at Susquehannock are laying the foundation upon which your later life will be built. We teachers can give you the materials and can show you where and how to build, but we cannot build for you, that, only you can do. Your choices now, your workmanship now, will help determine how well your structure will withstand the stresses and strains to come. It is our earnest hope that every student will build the best foundation of which he is capable. MR. RALPH A. BORTNER Principal Codorus Twp. Application of this to the public education system of today is clear. The elementary school is the base upon which the high school and the college must rest. This being true, the type of training and education the child receives in elementary schools will heLp deter- mine the type of citizen who will graduate from our nation's high schools and colleges. Most of the components which determine the per- sonality of an individual are well established by the time he enters high school. There are four elementary centers in our district which send pupils to Susquehannock. For those were years that cannot be replaced- A treasure all your own of memories. lt holds the many troubles that you faced And all your many dreams and fantasies. To dance again those hoaky-poaky dances, To walk once more with classmates down the hall, To dream of skating parties and romances, And yell with all your might at basketball, To laugh again with friends you'll see no more, I To work and play lust as you used to do- All this you'll reminisce as through the door Of life's threshold you enter, fresh and new. For those were years you'll never know again, Lock their precious mem'ries in your heart, Remembering their priceless value when Into the hands of Fate you now depart. -Nancy Gaeckler 0 9 MI 1 l sy sia' 3 These are our FAVORITES . . .
