Mark Chandler — Born January 21, 1970 — Died October 8, 1980 Chris Wheeler — Born May 12, 1970 — Died February 18, 1985 A LETTER TO MARK, MY SON: They didn’t forget you, you know — Your classmates and friends — The ones you cared so much about — The ones who rode the bus with you and played with you after school. They really cared: I know because I found all those cards they made for you in 4th grade when you went to the hospital for minor surgery. I also found all those love notes from little girls. Even at 10 you were quite popular with the girls. Your teachers cared and they all liked you. I know because I found all your old report cards and read the comments each one made about you. OK, sure, you were a little too talkative and yeah, you wanted to be the center of attention. What kid doesn’t? But they also said that you were quite intelligent. Why, who knows where you would've been today. I like to think that you would’ve been the 1988 class president and valedictorian. How proud I’d have been. I wonder how handsome you would've looked in your cap and gown as you walked down the same aisle as I walked down 22 years ago. You would’ve been on the brink of manhood. Well, you've been gone 8 years now. For me it doesn’t seem like that long, but for others it has been a long time, but they didn’t forget you, Mark. They remembered, and by honoring you in this way they have shown great maturity and compassion. Principal’s Message As members of the Class of 1988, yours is the 27th class to be graduated from our high school. When you thumb through this book, as you will do many times in the years to come, many memories will be reawakened — of old friends you have lost touch with, of the great senior year enjoyed by both your football and basketball teams (long awaited), of your teachers, of the times you had in high school both good and bad, of how fast the years have sped by . . . all of these memories will come flooding back, but one memory in particular that I would like you to retain is of the pride I have in you and our school and what you have helped SVHS become. During the past year our school has been designated by the Commissioner of Education as one of the top sixteen high schools in the state. This great honor could not have been possible without you. The Class of ’88 will always be number one with me. In closing, I wish all of you the best of luck in the future.
