Her many fine contributions have added new dimensions to Susquehanna Valley. We wish her good luck, health and happiness. Mrs. Priscilla Burns, husbar.d Robert and grandson Ryan Mrs. Burns came to S. V. in September 1970 as a full time English teacher although she had substitu- ted during the preceding year. She has a B.A. in English from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. Her teaching career began some years later, after working as a draftsman and raising two children, both S.V. graduates. Her graduate studies were done in the MAT program at S.U.N.Y., Binghamton. Besides teaching Regents English, she helped establish the electives program for seniors, which ran from 1974 to 1981, in which she taught drama and creative writing. She was advisor for Student Council and the Class of 1981 However, she would like to be remembered for her direction of her dramatic production of Thornton Wilder’s SKIN OF OUR TEETH, the formation of POTOURRI, S.V.’s literary magazine, and especially the fact that she really enjoyed teaching students. 2 3 Principal’s Message As members of the Class of 1987, yours is the 26th class to be graduated from our high school. Congratulations on a job well done. Undoubtedly as the years pass, you will look through this book many times reminiscing about your high school days. One memory I would like you to always carry with you is the fact that Susquehanna Valley High School has been honored by the State Education Department as being one of the top sixteen high schools in New York state. We are as proud of this recognition, as I'm sure you are. We have been able to excel because of our dedicated staff, our fine programs, and most importantly, because of you our students who have made the most of what we have been able to offer you. You are family and as you take your place in the adult world, we will miss you. Think of us from time to time, stop in to visit whenever possible. We will remember you with a fondness that has grown over the last three years. In closing, I wish all of you the best of luck in the future. I know you will make us proud of your accomplishments. Samuel S. Cadden High School Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The Class of 1987 has been especially close to me because you are the people who made me feel comfortable here at SV when I came three years ago. As your teacher, my fondest recollections are those of your dedication and kindness especially toward me, a stranger in your midst three years ago. As your class moderator, I have been impressed by your great school spirit and your willingness to work hard. As Assistant Principal, I have come to respect your responsibility and initiative particularly con- cerning school projects. I am proud to have been associated with the Class of 1987, and I wish all of you only the best of health and happiness ail of your lives. 5 Joseph F. P.M. 14 Exchange Student Natalia Tahmazian Buenos Aires, Argentina I want to thank everybody for making my visit in the States enjoyable. I had a great time that I will remember for the rest of my life. I want to thank especially my host family who were very nice to me. I mostly enjoyed Ski Club, basketball games and meeting nice people. I also enjoyed all my classes where I found something special that I will never forget, like: 1. Mr. Bajkowski’s yeeeees! trying to encourage his students!! 2. Mr. Gahagan’s classes in which most of the time I was lost and I couldn't follow his high speed conducting of the class, but he was very nice to me. 3. English classes I had fun laughing at people eating M M’s and all kinds of candies. While I enjoyed the interesting speeches, I had a difficult time trying to understand Macbeth. 4. Mrs. Baldwin made me feel at home during her classes. 5. Art classes where I had fun! Although I was embarrassed once when I was the model for the class. 6. Gym, study halls and Foreign Foods where I met nice people. Thanks everybody — students, teachers and all of SV’s staff for making me so happy during this 2Vz months! THANKS A LOT! I'm glad that I could be an exchange student at this school! I will remember YOU! Natalia M. Tahmazian S.V. Seniors have received many privileges this year and the biggest accomplishment is the Senior Lounge. The seniors have been allowed to be in Cafeteria A during study halls and listen to their Walkmans and sit in very comfortable chairs bought by Student Council. There is also a fruit juice machine in the lounge. It is a time for seniors to be by themselves with no teachers around. Hopefully the Senior Lounge will be a tradition to be followed by every senior class. 49 C. McLaughlin, D. Chapman, M. Warner, J. Deeter, K. Butchko, G. McGuire, E. Cicak, T. DiRado, E. Weingartner Coach: R. Weingartner It's been a year of ups and downs, a year of smiles, a year of frowns. So let me now look back in time to a season past, in littlemyme Corning East, got lost on the bus. A victory, but not for us. We got there late, we needed luck. But Buckwheat couldn't give it to us. My memory, it fades a bit. a long pass caught, whoops, nope .. . it’s dropped. Hancock, what a work to rhyme. A victory meant for our team this time. Block Hancock. Knock Hancock Stalk Hancock, too. Clock Hancock Flock Hancock. See. what did I tell you. Well anyway, what’s remembered most was Trombone Tim Burdick s two picko notes. Then came Owego, a big bubble burst. We penetrated their goal-line, and we were first. We scored on a team, who had a big man. a Division One player, O'Rourke is a man! All battered and bruised, but heads held up high. we now would play another Susquehanna ‘Sabre'' High. '•mm A number Our Homecoming game was game four. A victory knocking, was right at our door. Outstanding efforts by Ronk and Chuck Harder, but with seconds remaining, the win had departed. But this by-far. was our best day Because as a team, we now were together. We played as one—everyone was the same. We lost as one — no one person to blame. The play I remember most from this game was one by a lineman, it gave him some fame. With an intercepted pass, and exhuberant joy. the lineman I'm talkin about’s nicknamed Roy.' Like a fleet footed receiver, he took off to score. and he might of if the end zone was a big candy store. Without our tightends one and two. John King was called upon to do. a blocking job he was a part of an offensive line which ruled from the start. With a play so simple, yet §o harp to defend against, we caught them off guard. Quarterback sneak Is what we would do. like a skipped broken record, ran with mptioM too. • V e fought the Saints, and held them in. be quarters past, we thought we could the third period came to an end. it was the Sabers turn to commit a deadly sin When committing a sin, it should never be committed against a Saint team you see Though the score was lopsided, anyone who was there would know that the Saints had one heck of a scare. he next game was a game which I d hate to compare. but just like the bus ride, it seemed we weren't there. A great catch, but fumbled, a long kick return and striped shirts who seemed like they lost... . what they learned. A victory this day would not be denied, like a winning auto at Indy, the Wheels had survived The next team we played was a team from afar and a player on that team was a bonafide star. Without him the squad was an average team but with him it raged like the power of steam. Enough said about that game, our next game would show the best hit of the year, but wouldn’t you know: It happened in pregame and Dundon went long smashed into Coach Bryant, both fell to the lawn. Football they say is a family game, receiving a ball could be said is the same. This is true, on separate days when cousins wide open dropped what you could say were perfect thrown passes, but none could compare to the dropped pass by Bavaro, he caught nothing but air. 58 Our fifth game came on a Friday nite. We played the Saints, we had no fright. 59 Row 1: K. Andres, B. Dundon, S. Haskell, P. Haughton, C. Hugunine, B. Picked, B. Hoke. Row 2: S. Kernan, K. Pritchard, M. Lewis, E. Radar. K. Wheeler, T. Row 2: Mr. Stull, C. Winans, T. Jenkins, Mr. Spaulding Shooting is a challenging and enjoyable sport. Most students are interested in shoot- ing for the same reason that they want to play football, baseball or basketball. The shooting sports are particularly appealing to many students because they do not require superior physical prowess as do many sports. A student lacking the physical requirements to make the varsity basketball team for example, would find that he could compete on an equal basis in competitive shooting at local, state or national level. School shooting programs at the high school level have grown in number and popular- ity in recent years. Some schools have organized shooting clubs on an extra curricular basis such as here at SV. The club welcomes all students (boys and girls), grades 10, 11 and 12, to its weekly meetings and during the fall and spring school periods club members shoot trap or skeet at a local gun club range on a regular basis. Bowling The Varsity Girls Bowling Team repeated as Division II Champions for the 7th year out of the past 8 seasons. The girls also captured the Class “B” Sectional winners’ crown for the 7th year in a row. The team consisted of senior — Cindy Stevens (171), juniors — Jenny Harding (174) and Dawn Shafer (171), and sophomores Karen Drumm (167) and Paula Studer (163). These bowlers completed an 11-2 season, which was highlighted by the defeat of Union Endicott for the second consecutive year. This team was very special to their coaches and friends — they took pride in their sport, school and had respect for their coach. In addition to the team titles and honors, four individuals were selected to S.T.A.C. Bowling All-Star’' teams. Junior Jenny Harding was selected by all S.T.A.C. coaches to the “All- Conference Team.’ Cindy Stevens, Dawn Shafer, and Karen Drumm, were also to receive All Division II Team recognition. The J.V. Girls Team also achieved the high distinction of Division Champions, they went on to conquer and win the J.V. Girls S.T.A.C. Championship. This team consisted of Capt. Pam Spear (161), Lisa Smith (161), Sheila Adams (167), Tracy Heatherman (142), Sue Carnevale (122), Theresa Diffendorf (120) and Mary Lynn Cline (108). Mr. Burd. as well as the yearbook staff, would like to congratulate all bowlers on their suc- cessful and rewarding season, and thank all of our supporters. Bowling The Varsity Boys Bowling Team didn’t enjoy a highly successful season as far as their record goes, but with their establishment as a highly respected bowling program and school, we were the school to beat. The keglers bowled well, maintaining a team average of over 900 pins per game. The team was lead by senior and captain, Jamie Saar (200.4) and Pat Sine (185.5). Both athletes received ' All- Division All-Star recognition by the league coaches. The team finished the regular season with an impressive win over Chenango Valley, (who went on to represent Section IV at the state meet). The boys team placed 2nd in Class B Sectionals and went on to place 4th in the State Qualifer. With four of the five bowlers returning next year, the team has developed its’ skill and will be a highly ex- perienced bowling team next season. Members of this team were Jamie Saar, Pat Sine, Paul Laviska (179), Dave Potter (174), and John Finch (171). The J.V. Boys placed second in their division. The members of this team were: Dave Perkins (172.4), Tom Ribble (168.1), John Donnellon (162.4), Jerry Minoia (153.2), Steve Harder (153.4), Brian Longo (153.4), Pat Moriarity (149.7), Leon Phillips (149) and Matt Hawley (149). The show was held not only to raise money for the senior class, but also to have fun and to give the community a different type of entertainment. The show had two themes: prom wear and party wear. With the help of Nancy Summers, our advisor, and Linda Davis, the show was a combination skit and fashion show. A special thanks also goes to Mr. Stanton, who was our Master of Ceremonies. The twelve seniors who participated were: Paul Bryan, Jennifer Nevins, Chris Guinan, Elaine Cicak, Tim Burdick, Tammy Ingraham, Michelle Scherer, Eric Rader, Brian Hoke, Lisa Davis. The Students of S.V. have adopted the Conklin Senior Citizens as their special friends. It has been a most rewarding experience for both groups. Members of Spirit Club raked leaves for the Senior Citizens in October, and representatives from the Senior Citizen group served as models in the Faculty Fashion Show held in November. Spirit Club hosted a Christmas party for their senior friends in December complete with cookies and punch provided by Mrs. Perry's Food Class, a visit by our Saber Santas and caroling provided by the S.V. chorus. The Senior Citizens took part in a round table discussion with members of Mrs. Perry's Family Living Class and they have served as tutors in our Special Education Classes throughout the year. Spirit Club hosts their monthly luncheons held the third Thursday of every month in the Senior High Cafeteria and arrange the enter- tainment for their luncheons. The Senior Citizens are a welcome addition to our high school community. Human Development Class and Senior Citizens discuss teen years past and present. Lectures, dissections and data analysis are done each evening at the indoor laboratory. The primary goal of this course is to provide students with brief exposure to the many habitats and specimens found in the coastal marine en- vironment. Students also meet and hear lectures from scien- tists and professional researchers. This five day immersion into the marine environment introduces a totally new content area while reinforcing basic science skills. A marine education specialist from Long Island plans the curriculum and daily agenda and leads the instruction. Two additional teachers assist with the small group, hands-on activities. Housing is provided in four-to-eight person cabins and meals are served family style in the dining room. Recreational time is provided each day for swimming, relaxing or exercis- ing. P. Kosinski. P. In the Fall, a number of Mrs. Baldwin's level II, III, and IV students spent a Satur- day at a Spanish Fun Fair. They spent the day sampling Spanish foods, singing, using Spanish videos and playing carnival-type games with Spanish motifs. Spanish Club members made a giant pinata in the shape of a turkey and raffled it. N. Jewell, K. Scalone, M.
