These two fine math teachers will certainly be missed by all. Good luck, health and happiness in the future. Mr. John O’Donnell Mr. O'Donnell received a BA degree in mathematics from Alfred University and his MA degee in mathe- matics from Clarkson. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy. He then worked for seven years as an engineer with Bendix Aviation. His teaching began at Gilbertsville Central where he spent two years. The next four years he taught at Warsaw Central. This is Mr. O'Donnell’s 22nd year at Susquehanna Valley. His main teaching assignment has been 3rd year high school math (Math II and Course III). He has served as the Math Department Chairperson for the past 13 years. In addition to his teaching, he coached the boys’ tennis team for 22 years, the girls’ tennis team for the past four years and also coached football for six years. Mr. O'Donnell said: “I have become pleasingly plump and lovable during my years at SV and also have dyed my hair gray. He and his wife will be moving to Naples, Florida where two of his children already live. He owns a double-wide manufactured home in an adult community park. Mr. Robert Dowd After graduating from Harpur College with a BA degree in mathematics, Mr. Dowd was called to active duty with the U.S. Naval Reserves. After completing his tour of duty, he enrolled at Albany State Teacher's College where he received his MA degree in Education. Several years later he received a grant from the Na- tional Science Foundation to study graduate level math for a period of three summers at Montclair State Teach- er’s College in Montclair, N.J. Since that time, Mr. Dowd has taken many graduate courses at S.U.N.Y. Bing- hamton, S.U.N.Y. Cortland and S.U.N.Y. Oneonta. After getting his Master's Degree, he taught college algebra and college trigonometry at Harpur College for one year. He then went to Chenango Forks for two years where he taught most of the high school math courses. He then decided to quit teaching and see what industry was like. He applied to Endicott Johnson and was hired and then soon promoted to Manager of Mar- ket Research. Although the job was challenging and in- teresting, he soon discovered that he liked teaching math better and after a year he applied for a teaching job at SV and was hired by Mr. Frank Donnelly in 1961. This year will be Mr. Dowd’s 25th year at Susque- hanna Valley. His teaching assignments have included all the regent's level math courses in the high school and computer math. He was also primarily responsible for designing the computer lab and developing the curri- culum for the first computer course taught at S.V. 2 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Members of the graduating Class of 1986. You are the 25th class to graduate from this high school. Years from now, when you are looking back through this yearbook, you will undoubtedly reflect on what your graduation has meant to you. Initially, you probably will look upon it as an end, but years from now I am sure you will look upon it as something far from an ending. Your graduation from Susquehanna Valley High School really is the beginning of all your tomorrows. For some of you, this will mean a job and the responsibilities of family living. For others, this will mean college and further years of study and preparation. Whatever course YOUR future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years here as having prepared you to meet and deal with all the challenges that life will present. I wish each and every one of you the happiness of a productive life, the respect of your fellow humans, and the love of your family. May the future be yours. Samuel S. Cadden High School Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As you graduate from High School, each member of the Class of 1986 will proceed in diverse directions and experience continued challenges. I believe your parents, along with the Susquehanna Valley Schools and community, have provided you with an excellent background for the successful conquering of all life’s challenges. Continue to work hard to be the best person possible. I am proud of the accomplishments of the Class of 1986. It has been a pleasure working with you. Good luck in all your future endeavors. Paul S. Kozak Assistant High School Principal 4 cJ l We the Class of 1986, would like to remember Mike Cron who died on February 12, 1986. Mike fought bravely for over 6 weeks before succumb- ing to the injuries he sustained in an auto accident during Christmas vacation. Mike, who was the son of Mary and Michael Cron, was born April 30,1969 and grew up in this area. He had one brother, Jeffrey, who was a year and a half old when Mike passed away. Mike and Jeffrey had a very special relationship, made even more meaningful by their difference in age. Michael will be remembered as a boy who loved the outdoors and hunting — especially with relatives. He truly enjoyed playing his guitar and was looking forward to mastering the new electric guitar that he had received for Christmas from his parents. Mike was in his junior year at S.V. and was enjoying the fun and frustrations of high school days. We are thankful for the time we spent with Mike, but it was too short. He will be missed. Michael Cron 1969-1986 A Tribute I feel that I knew Michael very well. Words can't really describe what he was like. A lot of the memories I have of him were different than he was in school. At home he was very caring and he really liked little kids (he used to babysit for one of our neighbors) and he worked on his uncle’s farm. Mike always wanted to make people happy, even if he himself would have to be a little less happy. Once when I wanted to use his tent to have a friend sleep over, he brought it and set it up — not until later did I learn that he had planned to use it. Although he didn’t play school sports, he was a good athlete and would play soccer with me almost every day over the summer. He loved music and his room was covered (ceiling and all) with pictures of rock stars that he admired and maybe would have someday become one. I said before that he worked on a farm — he had a way with animals (people too). He had a dog “Mitzy” and I swear they could communicate. He was very gentle and caring and could express his feelings easily and for some of us that is hard to do. Although I knew him well, this has been hard to put into words. His friend, Kelly Weiss 5 P.S. He could make himself sound like Kermit the Frog!! BROOKSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 1973-1974 Mrs. Aversa Kdg. A.M. BROOKSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 1973-1974 Mrs. Aversa Kdg. JV Volleyball 88 Ski Club 89 Boys Varsity Bowling The varsity boys keglers were very busy working on a rebuilding year which showed a great deal of success. After a tough start and only winning 2 matches of the first 8, the team went to work and finished up winning 4 of the last 5 matches for a 6-7 seasonal record. As the post season play-offs began, the Sabers rolled over all other school teams in the Class “B” Sectionals, and ended up winning this title for the second year in a row. Junior James Saar was selected as a member of the All Division II” team of S.T.A.C. Bowling All- Stars. Jim was also M.V.P. and Captain of the team. Class B” Sectional Winners Row 1: P. Sine, P. Bowling DIVISION II CHAMPIONS The Varsity Girls Bowling Team possibly just completed the most rewarding season ever. This team consisted of senior — Mary Diffen- dorf, junior — Cindy Stevens, sophomores — Jenny Harding and Kyra Lash, freshman — Paula Studer. Those bowlers went un- defeated in dual matches for the first time in our school’s history. Each girl made her own special contribution to her team in her own special way. Our Saber girls’ team won the dis- tinction of Division II Champs (repeating for the 6th year in a row) and Class “B” Sectional Winners (for the 3rd year in a row). In addition to team titles, three in- dividuals were selected to S.T.A.C. Bowling All-Star” teams. Senior, Mary Diffendorf was selected to the “All-Conference Team” and Jenny Harding and Kyra Lash received All Division II recogni- tion.” Jenny Harding was also a member of the Section IV Sectional Team which placed 1 st in the State Bowling Tournament in Hamburg, New York on March 8th, 1986. We would like to congratulate all bowlers on their highly successful season and “keep on rolling.” John Burd Varsity Coach for boys and girls Row 1: P. Spear, M. Roberts. Row 2: T. Heatherman, K. The Sabers Ice Hockey Club began the season as a team with talent, but unsure of its potential. As the season progressed, the Sabers rolled along. Unbeaten strings of 6 and 12 games helped the Sabers to their first Division II title. They won the league title with an unbeaten record in the round robin tourna- ment. As for personal accomplish- ments, Rob Chapman, Mike Emmett and John O’Neil placed in top 10 league scoring. Team awards went to Rich Zeh — most improved player, Rob Chapman — most valuable player, and Mark Boyden — sportsmanship. Representing SV for the all-star team are Bob Chapman, Mike Emmett, John O’Neil and Dave Chapman. Our appreciation goes out to coaches Frank Curcio and Tom McAvoy and to the fans who supported us. 92 Champions Broome County High School Hockey Association Regular Season W L T PTS GF GA 17 2 2 36 179 54 CF Playoffs 8-2 Vestal 6-4 UE 5-1 CV 7-3 Seton 4-4 ME 15-1 Bing. 6-2 W L T PTS GF GA 6 0 1 49 51 17 Total Record W L T PTS GF GA 23 2 3 49 230 71 Individual Records R. School sports, at their best, should otter students opportunities to participate in a wide range of activi- ties, including team sports and one opponent sports such as tennis and shooting. Shooting is by definition a participant sport, rather than a spectator sport. For most people, particularly those in the 14-25 age group, watching others shoot is only casually interesting . .. but the idea of “doing the shooting myself can be compelling. Girls become adept as readily as boys. Participa- tion soon quickens the sense of personal challenge, and rapidly develops the pride of accom- plishment that comes from practiced coordination of eye, mind and hand. Unlike the majority of other sports, participants need not cease actively when school days are over; they can, and usually do, continue to enjoy the shooting sports for many, many years after gradua- tion. Here at Susquehanna Valley Shooting as a club activity was approved by the Board of Education in 1983. The Club welcomes all students grades 10-12 to its weekly meetings and during the Fall Spring school periods members of the Club shoot trap or skeet at a local gun club range on a regular basis.
