He is just away With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you — oh, you, who the wildest yearn For an old-time step, and the glad return Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of there as the loved of here. Think of him still as the same, I say, He is not dead, he is just away. James Whitcomb Riley Tom Pittsley 1966-1984 We the Class of 1985, would like to dedicate our yearbook to Tom Pittsley who, after a valiant fight against leukemia, died November 24, 1984. Tom was born October 7, 1966, the son of Edward and Marlene Pittsley. His brothers and sisters include Mariella Gordon, Trudie, Edward and Christopher. He attended Brookside Elementary, S.V. Junior High, and most of S.V. Senior High. He left us in the middle of his senior year. Tom was a very special person. He had strength and courage beyond belief. He had a will to live and it kept him going. Through the good times and the bad, he was always there if a friend needed him. He touched the lives of many people, young and old, and because of this he will never be forgotten. 2 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE It is my privilege to address you, the Class of 1985, in this Yearbook. In the years to come, many of you will thumb through the pages of this Yearbook to remininisce. You will be amazed by all that has changed in that time. However, one thing will not have changed — and that is the quality of education that you received in your years at Susquehanna Valley. It will remain as high then as it is now. I say this with all confidence, because it has always been our philosophy to be concerned about the expectations for education to provide for the sheer joy of discovery and learning; the nurture of care or concern for the uniqueness and talent of other people; the stimulation of community purpose and spirit; and the development of each person's sense of confidence, self-esteem, and stake in the meaning of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In providing you with this, your alma mater has given you the qualities to help shape a better world. The rest is up to you. Samuel S. Cadden High School Principal 3 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I offer my congratulations to the Class of 1985. Many new things lie ahead for you after graduation. Your high school experiences in the classroom, on the athletic fields, on the stage and socially, will be fond memories that will remain forever. As you finish the goal of high school graduation, new goals should be set. Always strive to attain these goals through hard work and dedication. I am proud of the accomplishments of the Class of 1985. It has been a pleasure knowing you. Good luck in all your future endeavors. Paul S. It had become a little too important having to win. As the old saying goes, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. Well, that can only be applied to an extent. After you lose at something for a while, the saying changes. It's not how you play the game, it’s whether you win or lose. This saying might be applied to our football team. Being out there on the field week after week, trying hard, but coming up short was no fun. Some even began questioning why we kept going. For some reason we did and, whether we knew it or not, it was strengthen- ing our character. Being able to lose one week and bounce back up, dust ourselves off and try again the next week, showed a lot of character. Fortunately, our win over M.E. showed everyone what heart and emotion can be displayed by a group of men torn down and criticized not only by the kids, but a whole community as well. We had a lot of fun playing together over the years and all we can leave behind is our win and the memory of our strong character. Rob Finch 70 Celebration 71 Wsumo Cook.B.. Daniels,J., Coyle,C.. W SOTY WLM This year's bowling teams had an ex- tremely successful season. Both the varsity boys' and varsity girls' teams won Division II titles. Along with this, the varsity boys also won their first ever S.T.A.C. title. The J.V. girls also won S.T.A.C. champions and Divi- sion II champions. Our J.V. boys tied for Division II first place, but lost in a roll-off against Oneonta. For the girls’ team, it’s the 5th consecutive championship season!! The bowling pro- gram at S.V. continues to thrive. During the past ten years of coaching by Mr. Burd, his teams have risen from a low of 18% win loss to this year's high win loss of 74%. Although only 12 students come from grades 10,11,12, the bulk of the “keglers are seniors and will strikingly be missed. The varsity boys' team set a new school record for “most points won” during a sea- son: 63-28. This year’s boys' varsity M.V.P. and Captain was Andrew “Chip Corbin. The girls' M.V.P. and Captain was junior, Mary Diffendorf. Congratulations again to all bowl- ers and continued success. T. Jenks, S. Robinson, C. Corbin, D. Smith, A. Racheck. 90 g K. Lash, J. Saber Christmas — 1984, proved to be a unique and truly fun time, thanks to the hard work and good nature of many individuals. Heading the list is Santa Claus or should we say Santas 1,2 and 3. They were jolly “old” fellows, lending their knees to all who would smile and say “cheese. Hidden behind the beards R. Finch, B. MacDowall, W. Stanton 106 The crowd looks on .
