At the same time, we hear charges that schools are not capable of accomplishing this task. I feel that this charge is not justified — at least not at Susquehanna Valley, as we have endowed you, the Class of ’84. with the tools necessary to meet the future. Specifically, you have been given a firm grasp of those skills which will enable you to gather informa- tion, think rationally, embrace ethical standards, and decide wisely. As our 23rd class to graduate from this high school, I urge you, as you go forth in the world to make your mark, to put these tools to use for your good and the good of our society. May you all have the full measure due you of health, happiness and prosperity in the future. GOOD LUCK! Samuel S. Cadden High School Principal P.4 Dedication — Saber Tales DEDICATION The 1984 Edition of Saber Tales is dedicated to our Editor, senior Lori Grubham. Special audio visual effects added to the fine perfor- mances of all involved. SABER TALES — Local Concerts P. 13 A BUSY CONCERT SEASON 1983-84 was a busy con- cert season for the music ensembles at Susquehanna Valley High School. Nov. 11 was the first concert of the year. A Fall concert was a new addition to the calendar this year. Dec. 21 was the annual Christmas concert. Festive music was performed by all groups and Santa Claus made his yearly visit. 1984 began with a Pops concert on Feb. 15, providing the audience with lighter concert numbers and show tunes. March 14 was the extravagant Music in our Schools Week Concert. All music ensembles in the Junior and Senior High perform as SV recognizes this national observance of music educa- tion. The season was brought to a close on May 31 with the Arts Festival. In addition to musical performances, displays are set up by the Art, Home Ec and Industrial Arts Departments. In addition to school con- certs, the band, chorus and orchestra performs at local parades, schools and other public places. Our high school ensembles had a busy year as they continued to rehearse, perform and keep music in the eyes and ears of the community. P. 14 Local Exchange Students — SABER TALES Peter Gillberg As a Swedish exchange student that has had the opportunity of being a member of the S.V. senior class, I would like to thank you all for making this such a memorable year. P. 16 LOCAL VICE PRINCIPALS — SABER TALES ASSISTANT Spencer appointed temporary VP This 1983-84 school year S V has a new Vice- principal. Mr Spencer is replacing Mr. Service who was last year's V.P Mr. Spencer is only a replacement and will be here until they find a permanent replacement for V.P here at S.V. Mr. Spencer has a long background of working at various schools as not only V.P. and Principal but he was a teacher, substitute teacher and also a football coach for many years. When asking Mr. Spencer if S.V. students were in general “bad kids he replies that he had never met a bad kid. Mr Spencer feels that all students should be able to show themselves in their best light. He also feels that he is more lenient with students as far as punish- ments are concerned because he would like the students, not to be afraid of him but instead see that he is the type of person that students cane talk to. Mr. Spencer also tells us that he strongly believes in giving each student a chance to say what he or she feels. Mr. Spencer feels as though he is very fair and he throughly working with S.V. students and faculty very much. Mr. Spencer has made changes here at S.V. One of the more important changes which he has made is the listing students that he is to see. opposed to having the students called out of class. Mr Spencer feels this is very important not only to him but the students. This system enables the students to see Mr. Spencer on their free time and it also gives students responsibility and independence which Mr. Spencer feels is very im- portant. When asking Mr. Spencer what his main goal or ac- complishment was for his students here at S.V. he replied that he would like S.V. students to learn how to solve their own problems; he wants the students to strive for independence also. Mr. Spencer considers himself a very optomistic man who sees the best in people. He enjoyed education as a kid and ap- preciated school as a place to learn and to see friends also. Mr. Spencer spends his weekends fishing, Hunting, at S.V. sports events, and with his family. I asked Mr. Spencer if he could have one wish come true what it would be, he replied that Students have good health and he also wants peace. Mr. Spencer has been doing a fine job here at S.V. the students seem to like him and the faculty supports him. STUDENT COUNCIL NEWSPAPER STAFF This year the Student Council’s first big project was to organize Homecoming in October. Other projects later on were the Pep Club. Saber Christmas and the hall monitor system. The year saw the reopening of the bookstore after a long absence, and a clothing drive for Mrs. Yurka’s class. The Council has high hopes each year and makes plans to promote school spirit and improve campus life. Everyone's support and help is needed and encouraged. Advisors are Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Donnelly. Once again this year the Saber Scene was put out by a faithful few. Under the guidance of Mrs. Haskell and Mrs. Donnelly, the school paper reported happenings of SV, the life, the sports, the opinions. The tremendous task of interview- ing and researching stories resulted in a new issue about every 3 months. The Editor-in-Chief was Kari Goldberg. Row 1 Mary Hardwick. Jill Galli. Carol Kleeman. Several records were set. Andy Corbin set a school. League and Broome County record for most receptions in one season. 53. and school records for most passing yardage as a team. 974. Rick Burdash passed for a total of 917 yards. When a school sports team inherits a record of O-from he last 3 years, their biggest battle is not on the field, but rather in the minds of the individuals and in the soul of the team. Im- agine the burden of carrying this reputation into every game; to have spent one-half of your scholastic career being condi- tioned by the press and school community to lose. Under this pressure the 1983 Football Squad made great strides. Their playing abilities showed definite improvement. Even their mental approach was better this year, but to the anguish of the team, it was not good enough. The graduating seniors can be proud of their continuous ef- fort on a team that is the brunt of many jokes. The underclassmen can take the new attitude they will inherit and go on to make their mark in the fall of 1984. Karen led the singles players with 5 wins. The doubles team of Michelle Tracy and Tricia Killian also scored 5 wins. Although the team did not win any of their 12 outings, they did score 19 points in their matches. Next year’s team shows much potential with 7 returning players. The team captains were Lisa Prentice and Karen Butchko. MAWS Saber Tales — Sports Volleyball P. 55 This year’s girls volleyball team consisted of three seniors, Kari Goldberg (Capt.), Kris Keeney (Capt.), and Kathy Albrechta. Three juniors Beth Deeter, Missy Sprankle and Dorothy Jablonski. The team was rounded out with two sophomores Diane O'Neil, and Gina Curcio. First year coach, Cindy Gorgos (SV Graduate) did a fine job. Despite a losing record the players still maintained an enthusiastic approach to the game and showed continued improvement throughout the season. The highlight was a second place finishing at the Chenango Forks Holiday Tournament.
