Saber Tales 1978 Susquehanna Valley High School Conklin, New York f'KS u Y rN) Table of Contents Introduction 1 Seniors 22 Juniors 60 Sophomores 74 Faculty 88 Sports 102 A ctivities 122 A dvertisers 142 Index 165 We’ve only just begun . . . because everyday we pick up the pathway which we left the day before. This pathway, when we start out. seems never ending. Then we see a tree which we recognize is our goal, to graduate from Susquehanna Val- ley. We realize that even as we pass this tree it is only a minor obstacle in our journey. Please join us because we want to share some of the experi- ences that make our journey more memorable. Working. . . in groups or individually is needed to get through a success- ful school year. Preparation is needed to get anything done. It could be done by reading or watching someone else. Expressions. . . can be given in many various ways. Sometimes we want to keep feelings locked hidden inside of us. But when the feeling is good, we show it by our smiles. 6 7 •. - ' 'i' IA V'A c . • f . ? . 7 ■ A - M‘-' f v% •■ $ ma 7 1' 4 ± l4sv l % ,J v £ « ( ■•' ' a 7- ; ■ r ,- . . if + + PH H . y k fl, S J U sh m a ■ N I? v % IS Vi 'T i,77. k vfcH?;.-; ,ttft i v i m: k 5 , I . 4 V T f r - ' t . , A ■ f • . i., V 4 1 ’t. 1 ' .r , J$ -. ’ tXr.A A A •.' • V -j r i -V.it' f ■ • : '. . • V-- ., m sv j - . ■♦« .••• 4r 1 % - 7, wMfr. High, you bring the whiskey I'll bring the rye, send the Freshmen out for gin, and don't let a sober Sophomore in na.na.na. . . . We never stagger, we never fall, we sober up on pure alcohol. . . 10 Sabers got the power. Sabers got the might, when they set together they’re D Y N O M I T E ... We. we, we don t. we don t. we don't mess, we don't mess, we don't mess around, we don't mess around. HEY . . . we don't mess around. HEY . . . “We Beat Vestal. . It was a Homecoming day long to be remembered by all. We all had our own preparations to carry out. The band members had an extra practice, the balloon had to be filled, the floats had to be checked. Every- one made one last check. The air was full of static. Everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats or standing by the fence. All eyes were on the field and anticipation filled their hearts. ... As the fourth quarter neared its end it became evident that we were too much for the GOLDEN BEARS. Tears of joy were in many of the eyes of the spectators as this was the first time we ever beat Vestal. The countdown was loudly heard from the stands. 5 . . . 4. . .3. . .2. . . I. The cheer “We’re number 1 could be heard shouted from S.V. stands. Joyful Sabers ran to congratulate the players. Everyone was ecstatic, except for the supporters of the Golden Bears. FINAL SCORE: SV 20 VESTAL Remember. . . getting ready for gym class, writing papers for English, throwing the longest pass, getting blocked out in basketball, doing a creative or science fiction skit. 14 BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) To many students at S.V.. BOCES is a large part of the day. They spend approximately half the school day there. Many students enjoy it because it gives them a chance to meet other students from other schools, and it also helps them get into a working environment. Through this they learn a great deal of valuable knowledge and also gain confidence in themselves. During graduation, these students receive a diploma from BOCES with the one they receive from S.V. After graduation most of these students get jobs in the related field for which they were trained. Co-Op This year is the first time S.V. has participated in the CO-OP at IBM. Three students are involved. They arrive at IBM at 7 A.M. where they work until approximately 11:30, where upon they return to S.V. The participants are also students of BOCES, where they received their jobs. This course runs for just one semester, after which the students go back to BOCES for the second semester. About the program. Debbie Liddic said. I enjoy my job very much. I’m not looking forward to the end of my term.” 17 J. V. STA C Champions The impossible dream came true for all the members of the J.V. Football team. They went undefeated in 1977. It started by hard workouts after school and co-operation between the coaches and players. The last game with Ithaca showed the strength of the team. An anxious morning workout brought on their desire to win and they did it. FINAL SCORE: 25-6 1. Dan Maus runs in to score a touch- down. 2. Carl Norris runs in to help S.V. into the lead. 3. Giving it all he's got. Leon LaBarre runs in another touchdown. 4. Leon feels the enthusiasm of his team- mates. 5. Now overwhelmed. Leon shows who's NUMBER I. 6. Jordon Merhib lends a hand to Mike Kalinch kicking an extra point. 19 Jules makes one of her homeruns. Brian gives the bat a little old swing at practice. Jon’s happiness is throwing good yardage with the disc. « Another pass . . . Another score! 1 This year’s basketball team keeps their eyes on the ball. Sports A great forehand swing helps Jeff get the ball over the net. Nick and Duane concentrate on getting ready for the meet. Gary practices even while having an injured leg. Melissa and Nancy get warmed up before a game. 9 At one time or another, we all have participated in some sport. We work out for self-sat- isfaction. for team spirit, and for the good of the school. We give it all we've got to support the team. In the future, we will benefit and remember these times. MaryAnn braces herself for another catch. s E N I O R S For many years we have been together as a group, and now that we are Seniors and graduation grows near, we must spread out like the limbs of a tree. We are going our own separate ways, reaching for our goals in life. 23 Loretta Aldrich Rene Andrews David Archie Stefan Babicek Glenn Baer Lisa Baker Bobbie Ball Linda Bailey Janet Barlow Yvonne Athorn Beverly Baker Stacie Bartlett Laurie Bishop Ediye Blaisure Cynthia Beam 24 Timothy Blanchard Susan Bowman Mark Boyko Gail Brown Thomas Burdash Marc Burford Susan Burrell Georgianna Bozon Julian Brown Nicholas Bryan Diane Butler 25 Nancy Carpenter James A. V. ? “The ability to choose my time as I please. This is especially important to college bound seniors, because it teaches them a sense of responsibility. This added responsibility helps in the mental and emotional development of the individual.” — Joe Page — Early leave, more freedom and independence. More things are going on such as graduation, homecoming, and the prom. There is something to look forward to.” — Debbie Duquette — “This is my last year here. I can relax a little, especially after the 5 regents last year. 1 enjoy a little more freedom now than in the past. I don’t have so much homework, either.” — Kathee Keeler — “Being able to conduct ourselves freely.” — Larry Kozak — “It’s my last year of school before going out into the working world.” — Brian Fisher — Throughout the years we have worked together on many projects with our friends and teachers. Like a tree, we need the support of others until we can grow on our own. 56 In your year as a senior, whaf are your fondest memories of S.V.? “My friends and all the great times we've had in and out of school. While other times it is rough, crooked, and hard to travel and a person may feel as though they are getting nowhere. We have set goals that we hope to achieve. 60 62 1. Some of S.V.’s juniors are taking a break and socializing. 2. Michelle is celebrating the fact that her candidate won. 3. Juniors believe in physical fitness. Here they are playing volleyball. 4. In this time we want to squeeze in every possible chance to make times more memorable, so that we can look back at our past and remember with happiness. 73 The Sophomores have taken a few more steps on the “Long and Winding Road. Some students are continuously working and studying. Others take out their frus- tration in gym class, while some sit and stare quietly. The Sophomores leisure time is spent reading magazines quietly and watching a basketball game. But for the most part, the students are enjoying the Senior High. 75 Class Officers President Joe Ferrante Vice President Dana Chester Secretary Chris Hogan Assistant Secretary Luanne Hoffman Treasurer Tim Barber Assistant Treasurer Diane Hoover HR 39: Rom I: B. It also shows that we have school spirit.” “There is a wide variety of them and they are really fun. You are with people that are older and can really help.” — Julie Shreder — “They give you a chance to test your ability.” 77 As sophomores, we don't always know' the answers to science questions and we have to seek help from a friend. As we move through the year we can solve more advanced problems. There are many dif- ferent forms of relaxation you can take part in. depending on what you enjoy doing. 1 , Students can express them- selves musically, athletically, or academically. They may put on skits, wrestle in the courtyard or practice twirling a baton. What- ever your talent may be. activities can be something to look forward to. 123 Student Council Officers R.Jones Assistant Secretary J. Kane Vice-President E.Shank President D. Vilasi Secretary C. Along these old country roads we will find. All our friends and memories, we left behind. And yet we’ve only just begun to reach out from our souls. We have so much ahead of us — so many hopes, dreams, and goals. We seem to be free to do as we please. Just like a tree blowing in the breeze. When we need a friend or a memory to make it through the day. These good old country roads we know will help us along the way. -
