Coaches, Mr. King - Mr. Farrell. The Sabers have come a long way since their first year of competition because of our competent coaches, Mr. King, backfield coach, and Mr. Farrell, the line coach. With the 1960 record of six wins and only one loss, the school had a team of which we could be proud. Entering the first full year of actual hard varsity competition in the fall of 1961, the Sabers proved that they could play equally as well as their opponents, finishing the season with a record of 2 wins, 4 hard losses, and 2 ties. The first game was at Hancock, where, because of the pass-receiving of End Mike Fitch, the Sabers return- ed with a 19- 13 victory. As this was the beginning of a new season, the team realized how valuable Jack Jones was last season. The next week's loss at Bainbridge was not too discouraging because they had not had a loss in over two years Jim Mul1igan's effective -blocking aided in keeping the score close - 27-26. Playing the first game on our home field, the Sabers gained revenge on the Wyalusing Rams, 38-185 the Rams were the only team to score a victory against the Sabers in the 1960 season. Chuck Purdy, halfback, was a definite asset in this game because of his hard running and gaining of needed yardage. The next week, the Sabers tied an underrated Lackawanna Trail team, 12-12. Guards Kenny Sickler and John King played a better-than-average game, while Jim Mulligan was lost for the remainder of the season be- cause of a torn knee cartilage. The next week, the Sabers met an unscouted Verona team and suffered a 26-6 loss, as the Sabers were without the defensive efforts of Ioe Augustaitus, defensive linebacker, and Denny Eleftheratos, defensive half- back. Playing host to Chenango Valley, who were unbeaten in five previous games, the Sabers managed to keep it a close game in the first half, the score being 14- 13 in favor of C, V. at the end of the first half. At the start of the third quarter, the Sabers just cou1dn't manage to score, and the C. V. Warriors departed with a 39- 13 victory. The following Friday, Susquehanna Valley entertained Maine-Endwell, a traditional rivalg this was the school's first night game, which proved to be a huge success. All team efforts failed, as the Sabers managed to connect just 'one pass to End Mike Fitch, while the Farm-to-Market Road boys did not complete any passes. The game ended in a scoreless tie, with Stas Kozlowski being taken out because of a badly sprained ankle, and Fred Colosi, a reserve quarterback, out of action with a broken thumb. For the last game of the season, S. V. journeyed to Walton. Bill Bado, a varsity replacement, was called upon to replace our injured quarterbacks, he answered to challenge by completing two touchdown passes to End Mike Fitch. The Sabers were unable to stop the opponents' attacks, and returned home with a 35-13 defeat, Among those previously mentioned, the following also deserve a special recognition for their unending ef- forts: Al Miller, senior halfback, whose hard running was especially recognized at Bainbridge, where he accounted for two touchdownsg Grant Snyder, an end, shows great promise in the years to come, as he did this year, in receiving many passes. Center Jim Craig, and Tackle Teddy Miller and Guard Robin Dedrick were very instrumental in forming a strong line and doing a great amount of rushing. Thus ended the first full year of varsity competition for the Sabers, with the future looking fairly good, as there will be many experienced lettermen returning for next year's season. S. But under the direction of Mr. Goldberg, things began to improve, and the team looked better. Ray Dare, quarterback, was undoubtedly the most outstanding player. The backfield was comprised of Mike Lampo, Fred Cobb, and Ronnie Wood, all show great potential for the future. The team has high hopes for next season because the majority will be returning. Basketball The 1960 season was a very discouraging one for the Saber Basketeers, as a lack of height and experience were prime factors in ending the year with a 2 and 11 record. The schedule was comprised of eight varsity and five junior varsity games, as we were not yet qualified to participate in a full varsity schedule. The game with our traditional rival, Maine-Endwell, was undoubtedly the most exciting and action-packed game of the season, as the Sabers gained revenge with a 43-40 victory. When the final buzzer was sounded, the score was tied at 36-all. At the end of the three-minute overtime, the Sabers had outscored the visitors and so received a hard-fought victory. Leading the team in scoring for the entire season was Stas' Kozlowski, with an average of 14 points a gameg Bill Bado ranked second with ll points, and Fred Colosi third, averaging 8 points per game. Coach Konkowski has much higher hopes for the 1961 season, as he has nine returning lettermen, all of whom gained much needed experience last year, SCORES: SV 48 50 Chenango Valley fjunior varsityj SV 47 62 Blue Ridge fvarsityj SV 45 63 Walton Cvarsityj SV 52 62 Susquehanna High - Pa. fvarsityj SV 55 61 Montrose - Pa. fjunior varsityj SV 50 66 Maine-Endwell fvarsityj SV 32 42 Deposit fjunior varsityj SV 37 52 Binghamton Central fjunior varsityj SV 47 67 Sidney Cvarsiryl SV 49 67 Susquehanna High - Pa.
