Ladies and Gentlemen of the Graduation Class, 1976 When you first entered Susquehanna University as freshmen four years ago, you were called the Bicentennial Class. The years have sped swiftly by and as you depart these halls much has been said during your stay here about the two hundredth anniversary of our nation ' s history. We have created a special logo; we fly a special flag; and much emphasis has been laid upon the heroisms, sacrifices and devotion of our forebears. Yet during these past two centuries our nation has changed — changed drastically. The society into which you are moving is divided, confused, fearful, and looking desperately for a solution to its problems. As graduates of a Liberal Arts college the responsibility of maintaining our democratic way of life will rest largely with you. Can you rise to the challenge? Edmund Burke said many years ago, Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their dispostion to put chains around their own appetities; in proportion as their love of justice is above their rapacity; in proportion as their soundness and sobriety of understanding is above their vanity and presumption; in proportion as they are more disposed to listen to the counsels of the wise and good, in preference to the flattery of knaves. Society cannot exist unless a controlling power upon the will and appetite is placed somewhere; and the less of it there is within, the more there must be of it without. It is ordained in the eternal constitution of things, that men of intemperate habits cannot be free. Their passions forge their fetters. If democracy is precious to you, ponder these words during the years ahead. Board of Directors ga i Gustave W. Weber President Dr. John C. Horn, Chairman Dr. Roger M.
