Kennedy was assassinated. The music of the young converted from pop to rock with the Beatles and Elvis Presley leading the way. Your Hit Parade and American Bandstandn shows promoted the new rock, and all over the country teenagers danced the Bop and the Stroll. The youth fashions followed the music with shorter skirts, bright colors and patterns and daring new styles. Also coming into view was the drug cult. My Fair Lady was a top movie and Peyton Place was a best selling book. On television came I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver and in sports Willie Mays was number one. Even a dream came true as Grace Kelly became Prin- cess Grace. 1955 to 1965 was a prosperous decade for Sunset and its Bisons as they continued to rack up titles, eight city, three district, and two zone. It also received the All-Texas Honor Rating for the Stampede's excellence. New clubs included Morning Meditations, the traffic com- mission, and the Russian and chess clubs. The first Sunset sweethearts were selected and the band received new uni- forms. Mr. C. C. Miller and Mr. H. S. Griffin were the two princi- pals of the decade and Mr. Lee, Mrs. Stuckey, Mr. Scruggs, Mrs. Ford, Miss Patterson, and Mrs. Presson were recog- nized by students as outstanding teachers. The faculty increased as Mr. Cochran, Mr. Jerden, and Miss Flanagan came to Sunset. The Sunset Hall of Fame added Lewis Stuckey in recognition of his election as President of Key Club International, Eddie Southern for his national track records, and Jerry Cobb, high school All-American basket- ball player. 27

American youth continued along their road of change as fashions looked toward short skirts, blue jeans and halters, and pantsuits partially replaced the dress. Long hair was in for both male and female and in music rock became hard rock as countless groups formed, Monkeys, Supremes, Bread, Three Dog Night, Grand Funk, and Chi- cago. Love Story , Billy Jack , The Way We Were and Planet of The Apes were sell-out movies. On T.V. there were Gunsmoke , The F.B.I. , and All In The Family and in comics B.C. and Peanut-:. In 1965 Sunset began the last decade of its half- century reign. Its principals were the well-remem- bered H. S. Griffin and H. J. Filgo. Outstanding teachers were Miss Morris, Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Roten, Mr. White, Miss Venable, Mrs. Hood, Mrs. Silven and Mr. J. C. Barnett. Added to the athletic department was the first Sunset swimming team as they won two city titles. Other sports titles for the ten years included eight city titles, four zone titles and a district title. Also new to Sunset was the Girls Select, H.O.C.T., V.I.C.A., and D.E.C.A. 1975 ended the decade with Sunset's Golden Anniversary and its fiftieth graduating class. From 1925 to 1975 Sunset has upheld its traditions of spirit, knowledge, and friendship. 29 Black-White Photography Copying by Barnes-Couch from Sundials Color Copying by Barnes from Time-Life History ofthe Decades
