From 1935 to 1945 the United States started an overall trend upward under Roosevelt but the period was marred by Pearl Harbor and World War Il. In the years of the swing, the bobby sox craze found American youth while they swarmed to the soda shops. Jive talk was in-the-groove and Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey took top billings with such golden greats as Green Eyes. Thirty-five to forty-five also saw the creation of Walt Disney's famous animated characters and the film classic, Gone With The Wind. W. C. Fields and Shirley Temple captured the hearts of many as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced their way to fame. For sports fans Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel, and Gorgeous George were all the rage. At the decade's end strapless dresses and long skirts were in as American ingenuity triumphed again. Along with the rest of America Sunset was in an upward trend with an addition of twenty clubs and two additions to the Sunset Hall of Fame, Linda Darnell for her participa- tion in motion pictures and Bill Hamman for his national track record. Among the new clubs were the Junior Red Cross, the Dallas Junior Historical Society, the Hi, bicycle, camera, and drama clubs. In sports, the upward trend of the times was shown by the football team as they brought home three city titles from four attempts. They also claimed Bi- district, went to state, and the Texas Interscholastic League Finals. In tennis Sunset had four city titles, in basketball received two, and golf won three city titles and two state titles. Saying good-bye to W. T. White the school found new leadership in Mr. Bushman and Mr. Chalk. Some of the out- standing teachers were Mrs. Banker, Mr. Pantermuehl, Coach Cowley, Miss Plummer, Miss Spencer, Colonel Bur- nett, and Mr. Baber. In 1943 the Pep Squad became the Sunset Sunrays, a mili- tary drill team. To brighten the decade, Mr. J. C. Barnett had his first year at Sunset in the same year. 23

sf l Citizens of 1945 to 1955 saw post-war America and the Korean War. They were also staggered by the Russian A- bomb, the American H-bomb, and the threat of nuclear warfare. But despite world problems teenagers continued to be teenagers as they became a center of attraction for many American manufacturers. This teen-age revolution included everything from the jitter-bug and milk shakes or weekend picnics to the newly found popularity of face makeup, teen magazines, and slumber parties. The poodle and shoulder length hair dominated female hairstyles while boys enjoyed variations of the duck. Then as always, clothing styles were faddish and many times erratic as the decade was high- lighted by rolled up jeans, hanging shirt tails and short shorts. The latest in the Bebob Slang were the crazy cats that dug hip music and America's idols were General Douglas MacArthur, Marilyn Monroe, and Sugar Ray Rob- inson. In its third decade Sunset saw several changes and addi- tions. In additions there were eleven new clubs including Future Teachers and Quill and Scrollg and R.O.T.C. created the Jody Drill Team. The 1945 Sundial introduced the first Who's Who and eight new favorites including Friendliest, Wittiest, and Most Talented. Further changes saw the cho- rus become the A Cappella Choir and the Sunrays became the Bisonettes. Sunset also saw twelve city championships and five prin- cipals, Mr. Baber, Mr. Cook, Mr. Lancaster, Mr. McKay, and Mr. Miller CMr. Cook and Mr. Lancaster were acting princi- pals in 1946.1 Outstanding teachers of the decade were Mr. Munroe, Mr. McKay, Mr. Hutto and Mr. Mangum. New to Sunset were E. M. Barnett, Mr. Conger, Miss Conrad, Miss Moss, Mr. Knox, and Mr. Graham. Added to the Hall of Fame was W. T. White for his new position as President of the American Association of School Administrators. To highlight the decade Sunset celebrated its Silver Anni- versary in 1950. ' 25
