SUNNYSLOPE HIGH SCHOOL 35 West Dunlap Avenue Phoenix, Arizona 85021 Telephone: 16021 995-6080 Kenneth E. Coffin, Principal Howard McConnell, Asst. Principal Donald I. Smith, Asst. Principal Kent Briggs, Dean of Students Dear Vikings: GLENDALE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD Richard D. Stapley, President Anne Schulz. Clerk Donald P. Voss, Member Cordon Wagner. Member Bill Stout, Member William L. lones, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Your yearbook staff has invited me to make a statement for the 1982 Valhalla prior to my retirement. I am intensely proud of Sunnyslope High School and especially the staff, the many students and parents who helped make it what it has become. Therefore, I have readily accepted the invitation as it probably provides my last opportunity to leave a message for posterity. In order for you to understand where you are today and what you can become, it is im- portant that you have an understanding of your history. Your high school opened with a student body of 407 students in September of 1953. The facilities were inadequate and the curriculum limited. Students could register for a maximum of four classes and for several years we were on double sessions or an extended day. Needless to say, Sunny- slope had one of the poorest images in the whole area. Your school rose from this humble beginning to become one of the most respected high schools in Arizona. Sunnyslope High School has many traditions such as the Viking located in front of the school, the HSN on the mountain, the S.H.S. formed by a hedge which was planted by a former Science Club. The Hall of Fame, track record display, overloaded trophy cases and Student of the Month pictures all provide challenges for new Vikings. In the library there are Scrapbooks, yearbooks and school newspapers that record the entire 29 year history of Sunnyslope High School. The uSilver Jubilee Bookn and its yearly supplements provide a living record of all important Viking achievements. Some of you will find your parents listed. Because former Vikings dared to dream, the addition of the auditorium and the 8lst Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. unit have added new dimensions to your opportunities. You have a clean, attractive school plant, staffed by capable, caring people and outstanding student leaders who have been excellent role models. These things, with which you have been blessed are very fragile, and I admonish you to take care of and to continue to improve them in the Viking tradition. The HClass of 82N will always be special to me, because we will Hgraduateu together. However, most of you took four years while it took me seven times that long! Always remember - that you are needed, that you can contrib- ute, and that Ha Viking is somebodyn. My ble ings are with you, enneth E. Coffin See related coverage, pp. 228-229
