These past seven years have proved long and fruitful for the Viking Ship. They have seen our campus progress from the first three small wings of classrooms to the present sprawling institution, Sunnyslope High School. Now at the end of our seventh year, finishing touches are being put on a new classroom section and library and construction is starting on a new swim- ming pool in preparation for its emergence as a school worthy to bear the title of Class AA next fall. lt is with cognizance toward this growth that we, the Valhalla Staff of 1960, have chosen as the theme of the l96O Valhalla, The Growth of Our School - Physically and Academically. Throughout this book, we shall endeavor to show our growth in four main areas - Student Body, Organizational, Athletic and School Life. It is our hope that this is not the end of the growth of our fine school, but rather the springboard to new and greater heights. -2- ,.s. s I, . . , 4,Q ,,.. Our Eicyandinsg School Plant Portrgys Our Grown STUDE T BODY AS a vital part of a growing community, Sunnyslope. High School has grown in its physical plant, students attending, faculty, and academic achievements. ' FROM an original enrollment of 350 students, we have ex- panded to an anticipated enrollment of 1050 for the school year of 1960-61. THE original school facilities in 1953 consisted of 15 classrooms, the present administration buildings, the cafetorium and the gymnasium. As we have grown it has been necessary to add classrooms to meet the expanding student body. ln 1955 eight classrooms were added. ln 1957 six classrooms and expanded physical education facilities became part of Sunnyslope campus. And now a building program, consisting of five more classrooms and a new library and conference rooms, indicate the mush- rooming trend. THIS page is a pictorial depictment of the expansion of our physical plant to meet our academic needs. Nearly everyone on campus belongs to one or more clubs or interest groups, and the number increases yearly. As evidence of this growth, the number of clubs and organ- izations has increased 2002: in six years. From a small nucleus of six,- we have progressed to eighteen organizations whose activ- ities iam our school calendar every week. Five service clubs, three honorary societies, four athletic or- ganizations, and six special interest clubs give each student a chance to find his or her niche and participate in some extra- curricular activity. With the addition of the new library wing to our campus the organizational growth will take another step forward. Incorp- orated in this new building will be a room that the clubs can use for meetings. ' This building stands as a landmark to our Organizational Growth. f X 5 X il W il A Q X X . ,X ,. ., 3,515 secretary, Suzi Student Body Officers are: Vivian Everett, Bergstrom, social manager, John Sickafoose, vice-president, Judy Kafader, corresponding secretary, Velda Boren, treasurer, Gail Bell- inger, president. The first sport that comes to mind is football. SHS closed out it's football season with a I0-0 record, a feat never accomplished in our history, to capture it's first and last Class A conference championship title. This shows the tremendous growth in that department and shows the victorious spirit of the Vikings. Although our regular basketball season wasn't the best, we managed to get into the post-season tourna- ments, where we captured fourth in the conference and fourth place in the Class A state tourney. This is also a first for us. Our baseballers aren't to be overshadowed either. Currently we are leading the league and things look bright for the future. The same goes for the boys on the Tennis team. Two other boys sports, wrestling and gymnastics, heretofore unheralded as maior sports, are fast becom4 ing fan favorites at SHS. Both programs have emerged importantly in the past few years. , Physically the athletic department has grown also. In the past seven years the employment of boys' coaches has risen from 4 to ll, while girls' coaches have increased from 1 to 2. The athletic plant has grown too, including a lighted football field early in our history, fencing for the baseball diamond, a new batting cage, more bleachers for the stadium, an' im- proved track, more equipment for all sports, increased tennis' court area, and double the original locker room area. Because the gymnasium is the center of our ath- letic program we have selected it to represent our Athletic Growth. f, WUT iliiiii A .r 4 - dw. 7 ,sin--wx-A is 4 '51 ,HPF L if XA. From these buildings evolves the many varied activities which are a part of this life. lt is therefore fitting that to depict our school life we have chosen the front of our campus, one of our original buildings and the part that, like our School Life, is always in the public eye. suNNYsn.oPa HIGH sc Hoon. 2 T ,' t i T ffl ffl n , in fy, ly' . wi I I-l 1'-Q ' wr, if A 4 ..l 2 aim? Under this plan two political parties were formed-the Equal- ites and the Autonomous. All members of our student body were informed of the name, slogan, and plat- form of each of the parties and were then allowed to register in the party they pre- ferred. After registration the chairmen of these two parties started collecting their candi- dates for office. They offered their party platform and then registered each office- seeker in the party of his choice. By April ll, major campaigning had begun, and on April 14, each of the polit- ical parties held its primary election cam- paign assembly. Each of the students went to the assembly of his party and through hearing each of the qualifications and aims, was better able to screen the candidates. The next day the closed primary was held following Arizona's pattern of political elections. Heading the two political parties this year were Vivian Everett, chairman forthe Autonomous, and Donna Sosinski for the Equalites. The general campaign assembly was conducted on April 21. This gave each of the candidates and his campaign manager equal and final chance to gain votes. , The decisive day was on April 28 when the voters went freely to the polls to vote for the candidate of their choice, regardless of party lines. The voters had the final say as to which students would be their leaders. -139- And the jUNIOR-SENI OR Prom HMISTY 1-IEAVE 'QU X- . iw' .- ' is. I A Fl AL MESSAGE FELLOW VIKINGS: Our ship has docked after its seventh iourney to discharge our senior crew members and prepare to take on replacements for our next journey. lt is fitting that the events of the past year have been properly recorded in the ship's log, The Valhalla. We can be proud that we have easily weathered this year's iourney, which could have been a stormy one brought about by double sessions. The crew members who have been granted the privilege of serving on the Valhalla staff have done an outstanding iob of sifting out and recording many important events, personalities, and programs of the past year. Those of you students who are terminating your education this year will find this issue of the Valhalla a prized possession which will have a prominent place in your home. From time to time you will find yourself referring to this pictorial history of the school year l96O, to reminisce and renew old friendships. Your Valhalla will no doubt remind you of those events in which you take great pride. Its quite probable that your pulse will quicken, your throat tighten and maybe your eyes might become somewhat bleary as you reminisce. You will say to yourself, lt o W Kenneth E. Coffin, Principal was great to be a Viking. MR. COFFIN A BETTER WORLD THROUGH YOUTH! was the theme of the student council convention which I attended earlier this year. There is a fine ideal embodied in this theme and one with which I heartily agree for youth is certainly the first ingredient. How- ever, youth alone, with all of its vitality and inspiration, is no longer enough. You and I can never hope to fulfill our worldly obligations until we have become something more than iust youth - until we have grown, matured, and expanded our char- acter through knowledge and wisdom. I believe the purpose of the Valhalla is threefold: First, it is a symbol, a memorial of all we have learned, the fun we have shared, and the tribulations we have endured. This book serves as a challenge to continue to expand and grow greater iust as America continues to expand and grow greater. Thirdly, this Valhalla serves as a faithful reminder that many times our high school growth comes, not through books entirely, but SV' through talking and discussing new ideas and participating in GAIL BELL' GE r the many extra activities with our brother Vikings. A With these in mind, plus the conviction that our lives are I j 7 if ,y even further enriched by the very privilege of passing through I f fSunnyslope High School, I fervently believe that someday there C ll be a better world - through knowledge, through wisdom, I ' ' , rough youth. if !f Gjy I Always and Gratefully Yours, ' X ,f2W70L.rf?fl-kf A U' GLQ fflf fi, 1 a FU .
