As citizens of the great state of Arizona, we too are cognizant of the sun and its effect. Our farming industry, the tourist trade, and the great industrial plants of our valley are all dependent on the great source of power, the sun. Just as the sun played such a vital role in the life of the Aztecs, so the sun plays a vital role in our lives. Our school life is divided in this annual into four classes of activi- ties: INSTRUCTIONAL, PHYSICAL, ORGANIZATIONAL, and RECREATION- AL, just as the lives of the ancient Aztecs could be classified into these four catagories. Notable among his many outstanding accomplish- ments is the record of coaching our VIKING basketball team to two consecutive Class A North Conference victories . . . On campus Mr. Oliver is highly re- spected and honored . . . lt is with deepest respect and admir- ation that the staff dedicates this yearbook to Mr. Oliver. Their intellectual achievements in the fields of astronomy, medi- cine, and numerical' systems show the advance- ment of their education. For their posterity they left number systems similar to that of the Roman and Arabic numerals. Their ultimate achievement was a perfected calendar 400,000,000 years ago. Their high moral values showed up in their carv- ings also. Though their narratives were numer- ous, they proved unselfish in that personal ac- counts and glories were never accounted for. Through the pages of our book we wish to por- tray the philosophy and intelligence of the Aztecs - 5? This game of skill, an early ancestor of basketball and soccer, was played 250 years before the era of recorded Aztec history. Elbows, hips and knees were fair play but hands were against the rules when players strove to drive a rubber ball through a ring 24 feet high, l8 inches in dia- meter. The game drew many spectators but tra- dition says they all vanished when a point was made because the scoring player became owner of the clothes and jewelry of the audience. , , X A' f J l 'f ll x Wg- fix X xx X ' 2 ar g X f 4 Cf' ' ltt' A 'N' QQX , lg.: G X 1 iq . Religion, the Indian s main organization, offered to the god, Texcatlipoca, the most intelligent young men of the tribe. Before the year of his sacrifice the young man is preened and taught to walk and talk royally. He feasted and was taught to play the flute. Late in the year he was married to four young women, raised as goddesses for the honor. In the final ritual, the young man broke his flutes, one at a time, as he mounted the temple steps. At the top the priests seized him, tore open his chest, and offered the still throbbing heart to the god. After such a sacrifice the youth's soul ascended to the highest of all Aztec heavens. t is, x 1 J . . ,. The purpose of our club, which is a branch of Youth for Christ lnternational, is to promote Christian fellowship on campus. Through inter-club activity we hope to bring others to know Christ. We wish to help build spiritual growth through Bible study and quizzes as the teachers hope to bring about intellectual growth through our text books. The Christian fellowship we have among students is for the main purpose of bringing down the rate of iuvenile delinquency. Our club meetings, which are held on Tuesday, have the purpose of bringing the Message to the student body. Each meeting is different and interesting, songs, prayers, a guest speaker, and a lively, laughing program are musts for every meeting. Most of the schools in the Valley of the Sun have clubs and often contests are held between our club and one of the others. Office Par Tue nd,-ng rs sra xxfx-,Sl - ea l U, P 1 f L to d Nw. Sitting amidst the bustling order of the square is the wood carver, content in whittling a temple decoration and excelling in his chosen field. The market is tull of people all going about their business, selling food, flow- ers, gold, skins, pottery and medicines. Recreation is much like that, we do best what we enjoy doing, whether we play an instrument in an assembly, act in a play or iust enioy dancing. .3 i HONAL X EL gf '.'C1i3-- S3 xx - g S 'X if :I 'T f H xx A , x Q , W N s S Q, if K 35.5 ix ?
