At Home At Work Dedication For all of his service to Sumner so tirelessly, so end- lessly, as one of our t e a chers, and as a friend to the student body, we, the Senior Class, are more thanproud to dedicate the 1960 DRUMBEAT to MR. JACK S. BARTON. Mr. Barton, once our science teacher, now our prin- cipal, is a native of Palm Beach, Florida, and a graduate of the University of Florida with a B. S. Degree in Edu- cation. Ten years later, 1959, he graduated from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina with his Master's Degree in Education and Administration. During his career as a public educator, Mr. Barton has served at Sumner as both principal and teacher from 1954- 1960 . To Mr. Barton, our friend and helper, we of the Senior Class are happy to dedicate the 1960 DRUMBEAT. At Play

We at Sumner are a group of time -conscious people --Bells ringing, clocks jumping, bus horns blowing, classes at 8:30, meetings at 2:15, and ball games at 8:00 make us so. Each one of us must ask ourselves, What does all of this mean? Is each school year at S umner merely something we must bear--days which must be checked off the calendar before we can get out into the world and re ally start living, or is it more than this? Those of us who have worked on this annual believe that life at Sumner is unique and worthwhile not only as a pre- paration for life, but as a way of life itself. This is what we have sought to present in the 1960 DRUMBEAT.

Students who have been in his classes know his readywit and his keen insight into pro- blems of education.
