Each one of us must ask ourselves, What does all of this mean? Is each school year at S umner merely something we must bear--days which must be checked off the calendar before we can get out into the world and re ally start living, or is it more than this? Those of us who have worked on this annual believe that life at Sumner is unique and worthwhile not only as a pre- paration for life, but as a way of life itself. This is what we have sought to present in the 1960 DRUMBEAT. At Home At Work Dedication For all of his service to Sumner so tirelessly, so end- lessly, as one of our t e a chers, and as a friend to the student body, we, the Senior Class, are more thanproud to dedicate the 1960 DRUMBEAT to MR. JACK S. BARTON. Mr. Barton, once our science teacher, now our prin- cipal, is a native of Palm Beach, Florida, and a graduate of the University of Florida with a B. S. Degree in Edu- cation. Ten years later, 1959, he graduated from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina with his Master's Degree in Education and Administration. During his career as a public educator, Mr. Barton has served at Sumner as both principal and teacher from 1954- 1960 . To Mr. Barton, our friend and helper, we of the Senior Class are happy to dedicate the 1960 DRUMBEAT. At Play Hdminisiraiiun MR. JACK S. BARTON Mr. Barton, our new principal, is known all over North Carolina for the high quality of his work in education as a te a che r and a principal. Students who have been in his classes know his readywit and his keen insight into pro- blems of education. When they approach him in his capacity as principal, they find a sympathetic listener who gives himself fully to helping with their personal problems. EW! Y 1 Q sg. 2 fi ssr, MMM VI MRS. N, ,. , 3 5 . ,Qirzggezg :E N s , S 2 xl' It Happened The doors of Sumner High School's new high school building opened September 1, 1959, for the first day of schoo1.Enthusiastically everyone wandered in to explore this glamorous building. Class soon assembled, and the year was off to a good start. The high school welcomed back an old friend, this time not as a teacher, but as our new principal, Mr. Jack S. Barton. They also welcomed three new members to the faculty, Mrs. Shirley Butts, Miss Shirley Dixon, and Mrs. janet Iman. September 16, the senior class assembled for the first time with their sponsors, Miss Shirley Dixon and Mrs. janet Iman. jerry Dawson, elected president, explained the duties of the class. Work was forecast for the class. The underclassmen were working too. Toby Neville was elected president of the junior class, and soon work was started for the junior-Senior Banquet. September 23 the 1960 DRUMBEAT staff was elected with Larry Burton and Jerry Dawson as co-editors. Time was passing, and progress was on its way. The football season opened with the In di a ns on the warpath, scalping almost every team in the conference. There were some sad expressions on the faces of our strong senior boys as they won their last game. Larry Wall, Don Councilman, Larry Burton, Numa Andrews, Jerry Drew and Bill Seagraves did a lot to make this football season a tremendous success. The Homecoming was a beautiful event, with pretty girls, new cars, and beauti- fully decorated floats. Carolyn Caldwell was crowned queen October 30. Football soon left everyone's mind with the basketball season approaching. The teams put in hard hours of practice, and the basketball season was soon in full swing. 60 L In Sixiu The seniors were not taking it easy all this time. The first Warrior was pub- lished in November with Beverly Cooke as editor. The DRUMBEAT staff elected the 1960 Miss DRUMBEAT. The honor was given to Linda Smith. She will represent the 1960 DRUMBEAT. Pictures were made, copy was written, and pie ce by piece the 1960 D RUMBEA T was beginning to fit into place. Miss Dixon introduced the senior class to Macbeth, and during the Christmas holidays everyone wrote a theme on the play. Our mid-term e x am s proved that brain work had beenxgoing on too in the past months. The finishing touches on the DRUMBEAT dummy were completed, and everyone waited anxiously for the return of the finished copy. Spring arrived with much excitement, atime anticipated each year--the banquet, a finished annual, a class play. Now, finally the most important thing. The seniors could all be heard singing around the eighth of June: There's a great day coming It's almost here, 'Twas a long, long time On the way. june 8, graduation- the most important day of any student's life. Enter to learn, leave to serve , may this motto be our steppingstone as the Class of '60 leaves to serve. 6 1 V Bn.
