Lites For many youngsters, Tuesday, September 3, seemed to be a dark day indeed. But, it marked the date of forty-four seniors ' triumph—their ending role as upper classmen! The first month of instruction included such outside activities as the se¬ lection of cheerleaders and their chief, Judy Barricks; losing the first foot¬ ball game, but retaining school spirit; and the choice of the class officers. Leroy Dodson was elected president. Of amusement to everyone, inclu¬ ding the faculty members, were the initiation performances of various clubs. A senior class meeting resulted in the election of the D R U M- BEAT staff, with Jeanne Chandlerand Berk ley Dil Ion as co-editors. Later in September, the annual-ad crusade began. The seniors sold more advertisements than ever before during the week set aside for that purpose. Sales managers, Mary Ruth White and David Hedgecock, were employed collecting deposits on the largest total of yearbooks ever circu¬ lated by Sumner Indians. September 25 was a memorable day to SUMNETTE staffers—theirfirstpaper! Creative writing, keep¬ ing columnar margins even, cutting and running a clear stencil, spelling and hyphenating cor¬ rectly, meeting the deadline: all these per¬ plexed the staffers. History was made again in the success of the annual Halloween festivity. A high total was accumulated to be applied on the future athletic field. Sumner was honored by be¬ ing selected to act as host for the annual College Da ' held at Greensboro High. October closed on a ratherstudious note with five seniors taking the Nation¬ al Scholas¬ tic Qua¬ lifying Test. EXAMS The Senior Class¬ meeting time came again in No- vember. In a series of meetings the class chose su¬ perlatives, mascots, class flower, dedica-. YEARBOOK tion, motto, and class colors. December began the bas- ketball season; and soon, one of the Indians ' favorite sports was well underway. Another day of excessive work came with the photographer who took special pictures for the yearbook. There was the usual last-minute confusion, but everything wentfairly smoothly until one of the props burst! Another had to be substituted. Plans for hoiiday fun in celebration of Christ ' s birth soon were progressing as class com¬ mittees planned the Christmas party for December 20, at the residence of Mr. Barton. And what a party VOTING that was! Rare steaks, Mr. Barton ' s crazy apron, mistletoe pranks by Mrs. Best—each one seemed to enjoy himself. A wonderful vacation and New Year ' s resolutions followed. January: Students returned to the grim prospect of mid-term examinations and the task of putting finishing touches on the DRUMBEAT dummy. This job is more than it sounds, though, and many were the uneasy breaths before the annual came back for final inspection. Spring arrived with lots of excitement, a time anticipated each year. The banquet, a finished annual, a class play, clas s night with the daisy chain, commencement sermon;all are memories to treasure forever. Then the most meaningful of al I— graduation I That night theseniors had always dreamed of is past. School days will come no more; but, into the adult world forty-four individuals are introduced, — Destinations Unlimited. SENIOR PLAY
