SILER Coach to the future Poem REFLECTION Destinations unlimited! the starry-eyed cry. Our fathers conquered land; we ' ll conquer the sky! Indeed, to the young, the future is bright. Each day bringing forth a bright new light LIMIT: YOURSELF By the yardstick of knowledge and material gain. Success, my dear friend, may be looked for in vain. Sometimes these days, too rushed, confused. This yardstick of success too much may be used. WARNING: LIMIT NOT SUCCESS BY A YARDSTICK Our fathers of old did a jewel possess: The ability to dream in peaceful recess. If time in thought you spend each day. This act, the role of a mirror will play. REFLECTION: UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS Therefore, if daily you ' ll pray and you ' ll dream. Then begin to work toward the visions you ' ve seen— A surprise of reward will soon come to you: You possess the intangible— the material too! CONCLUSION: DREAMS V WORK = SUCCESS! Subject: Invasion of Destiny To: The Rising Senior Class I . It actually began with my receiving a space-o-gram, the subject of which was a request for my presence at the tryouts of the Supersede saucer. Said report was signed by EARL TOWERY and STEVE VOSLOH, chief engineers in charge of pro¬ ject XYZ . 2. I reported to their lunar observatories thismorning, where I was received by the cryptographer, MARIA MANESS, and stenographer, JOANNE STEVENSON. Taken out to the saucer, which was of unusual size, I was informed that the strange abilities of this invention included the physical aptness to see into buildings. 3. The flight began, and soon we were over Radium City. Looking into the snooper-scope, the first thing we saw was a sign pointing out the Electronic Materia I Mai ntenance Studios. We moved in closer to investigate. Result: JEAN GAMBLE, JEAN CREEDE, and NORMA COBLE reporting to work early in order to take care of the teenage rush for instruc¬ tions on the new dance sweeping the universe— The Stratospheric Hop. 4. Next, we peered in on BERKLEY DILLON teaching new tricks to his former.instructor. Bob Cummings. Employed by Berkley were LAWRENCE WALKER and NORMAN TOLBERT. We also recognized LEROY DODSON and ROY DUNCAN as promising students. 5. We found HELEN RABENHORST in her office creating cartographic designs for this International Geophysical Year. What won ' t our women think of next? 6. We were astounded at finding CAROLYN TIPPETT as head of the largest co-education academy. Spectroscopy Insti¬ tute. ROY LEE GRAY, who has just been promoted to a full-time professorship, was advising his students on precision main¬ tenance. We understand that his chief student, MARTHA SLEIGHT, plays with the Universe Trotters. 7. Even in this highly advanced age there seems to be a need for love, with its ensuing problems and someone to solve them! We found JULIA CANTER doing just that, and JEANNE CHANDLER, marriage consultant, was helping her. 8. When we looked in on the Institution for Diseased Personages, we met the medical supervisor. Dr. FRANK HALL; head nurse, MARY BETH WILSON; dietitian, VAN 7J DAVIS; technicians , MYRA HARRIS and VIRGIN IA PUGH; and re¬ ceptionist, JACKIE JOHNSON. 9. Next we visited DAVID STEWART ' s universally famous Cinerama. Now playing is Destinations Unlimited, which has had a thirty-day run already. We saw, starring in the movie, MONROE OZMENT, BECKY EDWARDS, and BONNIE DANLEY. We noticed that special recognition went to MARY RUTH WHITE, audio specialist; JIMMY McCASKILL, pro¬ cess photographer; and JUDY BARRICKS, lithographic plate developer. 10. In the Universal Room of Knowledge, we found chief librarian, ALLIE MAE COCKER HAM, and her assistant, DALPHINE SNOW, checking and numbering books on space colonization. II . Looking in on the Better Domiciles and Hydroponics Publishing Company, we saw RUBY MOSER, the new editor, with her assistants, JUDY BROOKBANK, and JUNE HODGIN . Judy and June scout for, and write, the Who ' s Who column. 1 2. Moving into outer space, we had to dodge an electro-jet pi loted by ALLAN R Y A N wi th his co-pi lot D O N A L D McCANDLESS. 13. Shortly afterwards, wealmost collided with SUSAN MOORE, who tests new space cruisers for GEORGE ROBBINS, the universe ' s foremost designer of space craft. His newest ship is the Doppler. 14. On the earth ' s new artificial satellite. Mi mi track, we found JANE MORGAN engaged in her missionary work. GERALD CLARK was co-operating by teaching, to the inhabitants of Mi mi track, advanced agriculture and the use of common farm implements such as the nuclear distributer, the deuteruim turbine, and the hydrogen terracerator. 15. On returning to headquarters, we found that, as usual, BENNY KINLEY was still in a state of general confusion over the positions of the Supergiants and the Subgiants, and the Dwarfs, and the Subdwarfs, as compared to the Main Sequence. Said confusion was probably a partial result of worrying over the loss of his pet hen. Due to the unique and secret nature of this report, I found it advisable to formulate said report myself. Sumner School Auditorium Lites For many youngsters, Tuesday, September 3, seemed to be a dark day indeed. But, it marked the date of forty-four seniors ' triumph—their ending role as upper classmen! The first month of instruction included such outside activities as the se¬ lection of cheerleaders and their chief, Judy Barricks; losing the first foot¬ ball game, but retaining school spirit; and the choice of the class officers. Leroy Dodson was elected president. Of amusement to everyone, inclu¬ ding the faculty members, were the initiation performances of various clubs. A senior class meeting resulted in the election of the D R U M- BEAT staff, with Jeanne Chandlerand Berk ley Dil Ion as co-editors. Later in September, the annual-ad crusade began. The seniors sold more advertisements than ever before during the week set aside for that purpose. Sales managers, Mary Ruth White and David Hedgecock, were employed collecting deposits on the largest total of yearbooks ever circu¬ lated by Sumner Indians. September 25 was a memorable day to SUMNETTE staffers—theirfirstpaper! Creative writing, keep¬ ing columnar margins even, cutting and running a clear stencil, spelling and hyphenating cor¬ rectly, meeting the deadline: all these per¬ plexed the staffers. History was made again in the success of the annual Halloween festivity. A high total was accumulated to be applied on the future athletic field. Sumner was honored by be¬ ing selected to act as host for the annual College Da ' held at Greensboro High. October closed on a ratherstudious note with five seniors taking the Nation¬ al Scholas¬ tic Qua¬ lifying Test. EXAMS The Senior Class¬ meeting time came again in No- vember. In a series of meetings the class chose su¬ perlatives, mascots, class flower, dedica-. YEARBOOK tion, motto, and class colors. December began the bas- ketball season; and soon, one of the Indians ' favorite sports was well underway. Another day of excessive work came with the photographer who took special pictures for the yearbook. There was the usual last-minute confusion, but everything wentfairly smoothly until one of the props burst! Another had to be substituted. Plans for hoiiday fun in celebration of Christ ' s birth soon were progressing as class com¬ mittees planned the Christmas party for December 20, at the residence of Mr. Barton. And what a party VOTING that was! Rare steaks, Mr. Barton ' s crazy apron, mistletoe pranks by Mrs. Best—each one seemed to enjoy himself. A wonderful vacation and New Year ' s resolutions followed. January: Students returned to the grim prospect of mid-term examinations and the task of putting finishing touches on the DRUMBEAT dummy. This job is more than it sounds, though, and many were the uneasy breaths before the annual came back for final inspection. Spring arrived with lots of excitement, a time anticipated each year. The banquet, a finished annual, a class play, clas s night with the daisy chain, commencement sermon;all are memories to treasure forever. Then the most meaningful of al I— graduation I That night theseniors had always dreamed of is past. School days will come no more; but, into the adult world forty-four individuals are introduced, — Destinations Unlimited.
