That 15 us the senrors rn 1949 We entered the nmth grade confronted by the many rules and rrght at honee rn hugh school Our sponsors that year were Mxss Emma Hemphxll and Mrs J A Mnddleton 5051 By thrs trme our class had grown smaller We were agam drvrded wrth Mxss Hemphlll and Mr Short as our sponsors We all remember our Valentme party and the wemer roast we had at the Battleground Before we knew xt school was out for summer vacatton 51 57 The echo grows louder nova XVe found ourselwes junxors wxth Mxss Gxlbreath and Mr Woodson as our sponsors We had many new and ewtcrtmg experrences durmg the year Fxrst we got our class rrngs Then by sponsormg seweral programs for the school and by pmchmg and savmg we finally had enough money to gxve the semors thexr banquet lt was held on May 2 at the Plantatron Supper Club That was a mght that wlll lrve rn our memorres forever Then rt was almost txme for school to be out and we made and carrxed the daxsy cham for the Semor Class Nxght Our last memory for that year was a wonderful day spent at I-hgh Pornt Lake 52 53 Now the echo has caught up wrth us We started the year off wxth a trxp to Grandfather Mountam where we got better acquamted wrth our new sponsor Mr Zeb V K Dlckson No one wxll forget our Chrrsrmas party at the Blaxr Club House 1n Hugh Pomt In February the class attended Hrgh School Day at Elon College We have our Semor Play and trxp to Washrngton ahead of us Yes we are Senxors and lxttle by lrttle we realxze how much the school and our fr1ends mean to us We know that all too soon the years we have spent and the good trmes we have had here at Sumner wlll be only an echo and a memory 24 -, E -left .e 1' I Y W, ,H V55 'S- lg st QQ . 1 Ms, , 'sf' ii. CLASS PROPHECY Mary Ruth Wrlkrns Prophet To rest my weary bones I decrded to take a well earned vacatron So I boarded the Southern Rarlway Express and headed for Calrfornra When I bought my trcket at the depot I was very surprrsed to see Voncrle East as the trcket grrl She was actrng lust as happy and content as ever Arel Whrte the baggage boy carrred my luggage out to the luggage compartment Immedrately upon boardrng the trarn and gettrng myself seated the conductor Brlly Mrllrs came through yellrng Trckets please get your trclcets ready' Agarn I was about to get srtuated when I heard a famrlrar vorce from behrnd me On therr way to Chrna were Rev and Mrs Davrd Jones CMrs jones the former Vrolet Sharpej They were returnrng after therr vacation to contrnue therr mrssron work there We were talkrng over old trmes and were recognrzed by Ernestrne Patterson now returnrng to Calrfornra to work a famous movre star Ccow grrll the rdol of mrllrons of movre fans We passed the next statron and had to back up I later drscovered our brakeman Curtrs Nance had caused thrs happenrng He was just a lrttle late puttrng on the brakes At thrs stop Mrs Pruenella Hrgglesorob the former Erma Thompson boarded the trarn wrth her class of nature lovers of the Green Mountarn College Marre Luck now rn charge of the Green Valley l'arms was among the nature lovrng students she was here rn Amerrca lookrng over the srtuatron They rnformed me that Charlre Dye and Jean Harrrs were the coaches at the Green Valley College Another group of passengers who yorned us here was Barbara Tucker wrfe of the engrneer and therr frve boys They were rust takrng a free rrde Wrlmer Barker head buyer from the famous Blumenthal Company was on her way to Parrs to secure the latest fashrons We stopped rn Mrssourr for fuel and supplres Nerl Butler Jr came runnrng up to the trarn vellrng Paper' Paper' Get your evenrng paper now' Of course he was sellrng them for hrs father Edrtor of tne Mrssourr Trmes Mr Butler has as hrs assrstant edrtor Mr T M Marsh Jr I bought a paper and on the front page was a prcture of Thomas Harrrs the new presrdent of Gurlford Darry Inc Also among our passengers was Grady Edwards now a famous anrmal trarner He was on hrs way to anr Ape Show wrth hrs favorrte pet ape As we neared the Montana state lrne I got out my specks to be sure I was seerng rrght I was there was Leonard johnson and three lrttle Johnsons plantrng wheat So evrdently hes a wheat farmer now What a change' In Montana we had brake trouble whrch was corrected by the mechanrc Wayne Stewart Here I drscover we had a ho bo Wrth all her rnterror decoratrng equrpment tred rn a red ban'lana was Nancy Wrlson At lunch trme I ventured to the drnrng car Of all people to be the wartresse! were Martha Pettv and Peggy Nrxon They told me Carroll Steede was now the elevator operator rn the Southeastern Burldrng and Joanne Hardrn Walker rs very contented wrth the task of berng a housewrfe From Reno Nevada I called home lust to make sure everythrng was all rrght The operators vorce seemed very famrlrar especrally when she sard Nr ne Yes she was julre Allen strll workrng for Southern Bell When I got to Hollywood I headed for the nearest beauty salon to have my harr frxed The operators to my surprrse were Mesdames Blanche Creede and Sue Currre From there I went to the Hollywood Theater to see a prcture and relax for a whrle On the way I met jane Wrlkrns novr an adorable lrttle wave she was here warrrng to sarl to meet her fiancee So we yourneyed to the theater together Kenneth Reynolds and Shrrley Kellam were playrng the leadrng roles rn The Trapped Gangster Escapes Another actress who played as therr mard was Florance Hudson f i ta, f , . , r . . . ., . . .. .
