CAST STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council ofticers for this year were: President, Jay Hazen, Vice-President Mary Ann Ascolesep Secretary, Dee Parlapiano, Treasurer, William Laspina, and Parliamentarian, Sarah Ridings. The advisors for the council are Mr. McClellan and Mr. Tyndall. The other members of the council were elected by a new method this year. All those who wished to serve on the Council submitted their names and were voted on by the entire student body. As the governing body of S.H.S., the Student Council has ac- complished several things tor this year. A most outstanding achieve- ment was the success of the annual magazine drive. For the first time in the history of S.H.S. the goal was reached and sur- passed. Also a new system of chartering clubs and committees has been adopted. Other topics brought before the Council were: the an- nual parking problem, congestion in the corridors, and the desirability of an active chapter of the National Honor' Society. After much discussion on this last question, it was decided that S.H.S. should have an active chapter of the National Honor So- ciety for seniors only. However, because of the time required to obtain a charter, the chapter will not admit members until next year, at the earliest. SERVICE COMMITTEE School spirit displayed in the most honorable way-service-is the objective of the Service Committee Under the direction of Libby Hazen, the first girl ever to hold the office of chairman and with the help and advice of Mr. Lukens, they have helped keep Summit High running smoothly through such varied jobs as ushering for both school and community programs, seating homerooms ot assembly, welcoming visitors to the school and orienting new students. One of the largest committees in the school is the Cafeteria Committee. These people, under Mr. Bogart and Cynthia Hurlbert do their best to prevent cheat- ing in the lunch lines. The Safety Committee is best known for aiding fire and air raid drills. Its iob is to maintain orderly execution of these drills and to generally promote safety in the school. Mr. Wiebe is the supervisor for this club and Davis Van- Winkle is its president. The appearance and proper use of the school building and its grounds are the main focal points of the House and Grounds Committee. Under their president, Mary Jane Nittel, and Mrs. Davis, their advisor, the senior book club explored various fields of literature. Among their varied programs were discussions on John Steinbeck, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Eugene O'Neill. Down in the ranks of the underclasses, an- other book club was formed. Called the Page Turners, this club was composed of juniors and sophomores who were interested in read- ing. With the guidance of Miss Boyle, the advisor, and Pat Jordan, president, the group organized discussions of such authors as Daphne Du Maurier, John Galsworthy, and George Bernard Shaw. Kane. 1 FINE ARTS Dramatics, art, and dancing are three fine arts, which are encompassed by SHS's extra-curricular activities. Headed by Mr. Dederick, Guise and Disguise got off to a good start this year with their production of Adam's Evening, a three-act play. The club takes an active part in the G.O. Show, and usually produces at least one play for the assembly. Under the direction of Miss Hepbron, the Art Club was organized for students wish- ing to further their skill and knowledge of art. The main activities ofthe club are their participation in the A.A.A. Safety Poster Contest, painting scenry for the G.O. Show, and a trip to an outdoor art exhibit in Greenwich Village this Spring. The members of the Modern Dance Club meet weekly to learn poise, technique, and self-expression through dance. The highlights of the year are a trip to a symposium of modern dance clubs in this area, participation in the G.O. Show and the Spring Concert. Miss Didur is the advisor for this club. With an ever-present need to examine the complex problems of the world today, the World Altairs Forum carries on an active program of forthright discussions. Led by the ofticers of the club and Miss Steele as advisor, the group probes such areas as Russia and the Berlin crisis, the Cuban revolt and the penetration of Communism into Iran. Shonnin. 87 ORCHESTRA .MQW ' MUSIC This year the chorus, under the direction of Mr. Kautzman, gave the student body many hours of enjoy- ment. lt also sang in the Spring Concert and at Grand Central Station at Christmas time. Summit High's band had been rated as one of the top four in New Jersey and in the top 200 in the coun- try. During the football season it practiced faithfully every Saturday at Memorial Field. A great deal of credit for their fine work goes to Mr. Hannaford, whose help behind-the-scenes made this group outsanding. Another feature of the music department is the dance band. Composed of about fifteen instruments, this group plays for two assemblies, which are among the ones most enjoyed by the students. Mr. Hannaford is advisor for this and for the orchestra. The orchestra, although possibly not as well-known as the dance band, does an equally fine iob entertaining for such school activities as the Spring Concert. RAVES TO THE KING AND I For those who are constantly in a dither worrying about today's youth and in what direction they are going, may we point to last weelcend's production of The King and I, by the Senior High School's GO organization. It is not often that a newspaper takes editorial space to comment on student pro- ductions but in all iustice, the excellent performances turned in by all, were of such a high calibre that comment has to be noted. Better than some 200 young people ioined forces to put on a memorable produc- tion of a rather diFficult musical. The evening was characterized by professionalism rarely seen in most student plays, undoubtedly engendered by the excellent faculty supervision and direction. This year Summit enjoyed its best football season in three years, which included a suburban conference co-champion- ship. On the opening day of the season it rained, so the game was postponed until the following Monday afternoon. School was dismissed an hour early to see the game, but the team's spirit was dampened, and we dropped the opener to Roselle Park 'I3-6. However, the next week Summit was a different team and we pulled out a close 14-13 victory over Verona. The Hilltoppers met their arch-rival Millburn with the best defensive show of the season, which left Summit with a 7-6 victory. Finishing out a three game winning streak, Summit crushed Clifford Scott 19-6. Since Glen Ridge dropped out of th'e conference, Summit took on Clark High School and battled them to a 0-O tie on a slightly damp playing field. At Madison and Rahway we met our worst defeats of the season, 28-7 and 25-0 respectively. How- ever, Summit ended its season on a high note when we played our best offensive game by beating Caldwell Cin the last two minutesj 6-0. The members of this year's squad weren't particularly big, but they were fast. They used the T formation, which was a switch from past years. Filling out the T were Bill Bohren, John Schieppe, Mike Papio, and Willie Rhines at halfbacks, Tom Mettee at fullback, and Darnell Mallory at quarterback. Our speedy forward wall was spearheaded by either Clark Torell or George Riemer at center, Rick Morgan and Bob Gage supplied a deadly punch at the guard spots, Pete Faherty and Frank Pecca, two trustworthy men with some heavy armor, filled in the tackle positions, and Leroy Rayford, George Rankin, and Henry Bennett took over the end spots. Bob Gage, Pete Faherty, and Tom Mettee were Summit's contributions to the all conference team. A great deal of credit for our success goes to Mr. Anderson, who coached his first winning team in his three years at Summit. Can they make it three in a row? That was the big question of this year's soccer team. Could they win an unprecedented third state championship in soccer? Well, they came as close to winning as any team could without actually bringing home the cup. Despite an almost complete rebuilding job, Coach Haldenwang took his team all the way to a berth in the play-offs Who knows? Maybe with a little bit of luck the Hilltoppers would have made it. The loss in the playoffs was to an undefeated Steinert School of Trenton, 1-O. Their goal came on a penalty kick, while the Maroon had a pair of penalty kicks and was unable to score. The team was captained by Harvey Snyder who assisted in scoring over half the goals, and Davis Van Winkle, who was named to the All-County team as well as honorable mention in the All-State selections. Pete Howley's great hustle, scoring and ball control won him first team All-State honors and All-County honors. With Pete's selection, Summit has had a player on the All-State team for the past four years. The scoring leader of the team with twelve goals was Tony Cox. Tony shared scoring leadership with Pete Howley who had nine goals. Keith VanWinkle, Skip Johnson, Bob Voorhis, and Dave Holt rounded out the line. The halfbacks ere led by Harvey Snyder and Davis VanWinkle. Bruce Osterling, John Madden, Ross Chambers, and Jay Hazen alternated at the third halfback position. The defense consisted of Bruce Craig and Max Fry, fullbacks, and two top-flight goalies, Barry Gutwillig and Dave Barr. The future looks promising for the Hilltoppers. Captained by George Riemer, the Summit quintet ended their regular season with a record of ten vic- tories and ten defeats. In conference play Summit had a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The team was led by a trio of scorers: Darnell Mallory, Barry Gutwillig, andAHenry Bennett. The other two starting members of the S.H.S. quintet, George Riemer, and Sol Steplight, added greatly to the team as a whole. Riemer's fine ball handling and alert, hustling play brought many baskets to the five. Steplight's exceptional ball handling and passing labeled him as the team's play-maker. Entered in the State Touranment, Summit won in the opening round defeating Edison Tech. In the next game of the tournament the Maroon and White was eliminated by a tall Morristown quintet 69 to 63. The Red and Gray had just too much rebounding strength for S.H.S. to cope with, the battle was won under the boards. The tournaments among each class proved to be so exciting that there was always a big turnout-in.fact, often lockers had to be shared. Three Senior teams participated, of which Jane McKin- ley's became the champion. The Juniors really came out in a big way with six teams -Ann Weatherby's being the winner. The Sophomores, too, did a great job with Genie Eickle's team taking first place. The two champion Junior and Senior teams also played Springfield Regional with the Seniors emerging victoriously and the Juniors losing. The Seniors had a very poor season this year losing all three games they played against Westfield, Morristown, and Chatham. This, however, may be due to the limited number of practices. AI- though the points weren't as high as we would have liked them to have been the enthusiasm was, even to the extent of giving up some sleep to come in at 7:30 before school to practice. The juniors also have lost to Westfield and Morristown, but they feel the experience and knowledge gained is more important than winning. They also have teams that play among each other. The sophomores, forty girls strong, led the way in participa- tion, the juniors second with twenty girls and the seniors last with a dozen. The talent and skill of the girls was tested against Westfield, Chatham, Morristown and Springfield Regional. Because of the number of girls, no definite teams were formed. They were selected for the dif- ferent games to give each girl an equal chance. The experienced seniors won most of their games: the sophomores won ap- proximately half of theirs, and the juniors, well, there's another year. The high team spirit and teamwork should be accredited to the expert coaching of Miss Mueller and Miss Kirk. This year, as last year, we sent a hockey team to the State Playday, N.J.F.H-A., and besides having a good time and meeting scores of new friends, they were very suc- cessful. They covered themselves with glory by winning all of the games in which they participated. The outstanding hockey sea- son ended successfully which means that next year should be even better.
