SERVICE Each spring, the junior and sophomore classes and a faculty committee elect the members of the Service Committee for the following school years. This year, due to increasing numbers of students, it was necessary to add two more members. Many tasks, including ushering for the C.O. Show, the Hospital Follies, Athenaeum, the Spring Concert, Lombardo, YV. Badgley, A. Cinocchio, P. Eddy, N. Lavery, A. Fox, NV. Van Winkle, H. Evans, R. Pennington, D. McFadden. COMMITTEE graduation, and the football games, are assigned to the Service Committee. They also lead the homerooms to assemblies, and have a member on hall duty at the front entrance to receive school visitors. Mr. VVilliam Lulcens, who served as faculty advisor for the Hrst time, has done an exceptionally fine job. He and VVebb VanXVinkle, chairman, deserve the deep ap- preciation of the entire committee for all their efforts. l'1rst row I Hrrms R Fox A Cllft S Hopklns B Best I rell I E St1b1t7 NICCIHII I Popohllo C C 1r1,11o xecond row lx Shounrker S Rlfltrtv I Bonlrdel S Stollerv L Ffyhflg I Parkin S Nllglly D V111 Note fhlrd row C Elrl S Wmner M Xllllgtl' S Billlllllkllll I Iohnson NI Crltser Stflfllll I RtIHlllL,l'0ll I A11l ls Piync C Rlemer S Nehcr C Elsmsser lourth row P Hunt E. HOUSE AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE Si The House and Grounds Committee stationed pu- pils in the corridors. Assigned to a post, they reported to it each day, maintaining order in the halls and check- ing the washrooms to see that they were not abused. These students kept an eye out for any destruction of school property. When such damage was found it was reported immediately to Mr. Harry Dampman, the advisor of the committee, so that it could be checked. During the past year, the student body was generally co-operative in this manner. Most people do not realize how much this com- mittee has done for Summit High School, aiding in the prevention of accidents in the halls and the keeping of an orderly building. First row: I. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE The Assembly Committee is a joint faculty-student group whose responsibility it is to outline the assem- bly programs throughout the year. Co-ordinated by Mrs. Helen Davis, it consisted of three members of the faculty, Mr. Harry Hannaford, Mr. Daniel Kautz- man, and Mr. Robert Latzer, and eight students, in- cluding the President of the C,O. As a follow-up to the exchange assembly plan with Madison High School, Madison gave an assembly which featured their dance band. Other programs were the Frank- lin-Marshall College band, the Honor Society recog- nition, and our own dance band. Judging from the interest with which the student body received these presentations, it is evident that the committee's efforts were successful. CORRIDOR COMMITTEE YVill you please go to your homeroom? - This is a refrain heard by many students before and after school. The Corridor Committee performed its endless job of assisting the student body in passing through the halls, and obeying the school's regula- tions. The committee, composed of juniors and seniors, had regular meetings on the second Tuesday of the month. The committees tasks were carefully execut- ed under the guidance and leadership of ehlirman Camille Guarduillo, and Mr. Charles Knipple, advisor. 30 PROI ECTION CREW The Projection Crew members, quasi-permanent residents of Room 207, performed their duties every school day without too much her- aldry. Entrusted with Summit High's valuable visual aids equip- ment, these boys became profici- ent in utilizing all types of picture projectors and tape recorders in addition to the usual sound mo- tion picture projectors for class- room and lecture-room use. This year the crew showed two major films in the auditorium Our Mr. Suni' and Macbeth . Mr. Lawrence Conrad, the faculty advisor, instituted methods of operation which helped things to run smoothly. STAGE LIGHTING CREW The behind-the-scenes magic of this year's Stage Lighting Crew contributed greatly to the success of numerous school and commu- nity productions. XVorking closely with the Projection crew, its ten members managed the control panels for the GO. Show, as well as school assemblies, then branched out into the Summit Area to cover the Overlook Follies, Student Theatre presentations, Sym- phony Concerts, and other functions. Mem- bership in this organization is on a selective basis. Because of a high degree of technical knowledge necessary for an advantageous handling of the intricate lighting equi ment, examinations on both the and theoretical aspects of stage production are taken by all applicants. Much credit is due the boys and Mr. David McNeel , advisor, who are always on the job but rarely gain the plaudits of the audience. B. jones, D. Barr, P. Clark, L. Kamm, F. Baker. ATHLETIC COMMITTEE Under the capable guidance of Coach john Underwood, the Athle- tic Committee was able to carry out its varied duties with a maximum of efficiency. The thirteen senior boys, with Art Torell as their responsible chairman, had a lot of fun working together with faculty supervisors in the sale of tickets at home football and basketball games. Other than selling tickets, the committee had the job of counting the money after each game and collecting contributions at football matches. The reasonable price that you paid at a game, was one of the primary sources of income for S.H.S.,s Athletic Department facilities, and officials. D. Marcy, R. Smartt, R. Wrathall, P. Landrieu, R. In fact, Iohnis two goals in the tremendous play- off game with Englewood provided the margin of vic- tory. These two stalwarts were aided by Dick Golding, who scored the other goal in the playoff, and one of the real great hustlers on the team. The rest of the scor- ing was done by three juniors, Herb Schmidt, six goalsg john johnston, five goals, and Ed Betts, one goal. As great as this scoring punch was, it would have meant little without the defense. Except for two games, no opponent scored more than one goal against the stout Summit defense. This included 7 shutouts in 13 games. A great deal of the credit goes to Bob Evans, center-half, and XVebb Van XVinkle and Amold Cinoe- chio, fullbacks. But where would they have been with- out Gil Low's superb saves and booming kicks that so symbolized the power of this team? Donit think that this was a team of individuals. It was far from it. The credit goes to the coaching staff, Head Coach Ehwer Haldenwang and Assistant joseph Coleman. They wove this collection of good soccer players into a great soccer team. They also did a miraculous job of getting the team upv after losing both big games to Chatham and Kearny. How well they did the job is exemplified by the score of the next game, 6-0 in favor of SHS. Credit should also be given to Bob Snyder, who did a great job as manager and played a large part in maintaining the teamis high spirit throughout the season. Yes, this was a great team, probably the best Sum- mit High has ever had. This was a State Championship team, the first ever for Summit. It leaves a lot of honor to be carried by next year's team. However, next yearis team-led by first-string juniors Herb Schmidt, John Johnston, Pete Eddy and Bob Kinley-should definitely make Summit a contender for Group III honors again. The Hilltoppers, only field goal this year failed to stymie Ver- ona in a close game which ended in a 13-9 Summit defeat. Our loss to arch-rival Millburn was a hard beating, and about the worst we took-32-6. Unable to hold back Clif- ford Scott witli a 13-0 lead, we had to accept a 13-13 deadlock. This was an improvement over the two pre- ceeding games, but not enough. Beginning another of our one-game winning streaks, we reigned victorious ENDS over Glen Ridge by a score of 20-13. However, the squad met bitter defeat at the Madison and Rahway fields in its next two contests, losing by scores of 21-7 and 27-0 respectively. As has been traditional in the last few seasons, we won our last game, beating Caldwell 13-6, giving us a record of three wins, four losses, and one tie. Our backfield proved to be the teamis strong fact- or. At uarterback alternated Norm Lavery and Bob Cage, W ' ,Tony Cardone held the wingback position. VARSITY BASKETBALL igQi'4f1Summit High's basketball team, 1956-1957 version, Q picked by the experts, to have a hard time even matching the three and fifteen record of the Maroon Q'lQW7VVh1t6 of one year previous. A late season surge Hilltoppers a final record of seven wins and eleven? Alil losses, with an even split in the ten Suburban Conference games good for a second-place tie with Millburn and Madison. Four straight losses at the be- ginning of the season gave SHS fans little to cheer about. A thrilling win over Madison and three more losses gave the Maroon and NVhite the same record that their predecessors had had at this point in the season. Then the Hilltoppers awoke, taking three straight from arch-rival Millburn, Verona, and Madison. A loss to Caldwell upset Coach Underwood's charges very little, for they roared back to slaughter Chatham and ble Glen Ridge for a revenge victory. After losing two close games to Millburn and Cranford, the Maroon anaff. WVhite closed their season with a decisive win over Hillft A side, runner-up for Group III State Honors. COACHES AND MANAGERS Left to right: T. Burke, Mr. Underwood, B. Carrier, A. Langenus. Every team has its stars, Summit is no exception. john Meinert was the big guni' for the Hilltoppers this year. He became the third highest scorer in SHS history by scoring 399 points. Herb Schmidt, a junior, proved to be the best underclass prospect on the team since WVillie Mallory of a few years back. Another ex- cellent hopeful for next year's team is junior Tom Prior, who contributed 157 points to the SHS point totals this year. Bill Badgley, scorer of 122 points, was well known for his jump shot from the corner and his driving lay-ups. The Hfth position on the starting team was divided evenly among jerry Britt, Gary Stretch Hal- lingse, and Gil Owren, who gave the team that well- needed balance which is one of the most important factors in winning a game. In his first year at SHS, Coach john Underwood definitely should receive a large portion of the credit due to this year's team. He took a group of boys, all N gyghom he had never coached before, and wove them fl g rieam that was the most improved team in the tgp 55a-aff state? e close of the season. .T 'caros if .6 sv-.. INTRAMURAL BASKETB LL LEAGUE So that more people might participate in winter sports, an intramural basketball league was organized at SHS during the 1956-1957 winter season. Organized and supervised by Nlr. Howard Anderson, the league prospered in its first season as thirteen homerooms en- tered teams. An American and a National league were organized, with the winners to play off for the cham- pionship. Competition was keen in the early weeks of the campaign. In the National League, 205 and 215 met in a crucial game near the end of the season, with their league title at stake. Sparked by Bob Knowles, 205 jumped o11t to an early lead and staved off a late rally by 215 to clinch the National League title. The American League race was a battle between 109 and 301. Also by stopping a late rally, 301 won the right to play 2205 for the championship. The championship game itself was very close all the way. Playing a steady offense and alert defense, 301 took the lead in the first half, leading 19-16 at the close of the half. Sparked by Bob Knowles and Ed Petracco, 205 began to move in the third quarter, but 301 was able to retain a two point lead at the close of the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Ed Petracco p11t 205 into the lead to stay. At the final whistle, 205 was on top by a 31-229 count. The high scorer in the game was 30115 Mel Scholnick with 12 points, but close on his heels were 205,s Bob Knowles and Ed Petracco, each with 11 COllI1tCI'S The league itself was certainly a success in its initial year. The credit for this undertaking all goes to Mr. Anderson, who has boosted SHS school spirit by an immeasurable amount and begun rivalries be- tween homerooms which should last for many years to come. Most of all, Sir. Anderson should be praised for the ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play which he has installed in every person who played in the league. Picked to finish high in the Subur- ban Conference, they turned in a 3-6-1 Conference record, good for fifth place, and a 5-9-1 over-all mark. After losing seven out of the first nine, the team re- bounded to capture three wins and a tie in the last six games. Individually, the team had many standouts. Behind the plate Gay Cowen weighed in with a .343 average. At first base YValt Meineke hit a respectable .333 and turned in a fine fielding job. Bill XVilkes, at second base, gained honorable mention on the Union County team, and his .388 batting average was second only to third baseman Bruce XVilkinson, who compiled a .393 average. Shortstop Ed Rillo was an extremely danger- ous clutch hitter and led the team in RBl's. Left field was capably covered by Dave Barenborg, who hit near LL .300. Tom Corlett, a standout defensive center fielder, shook off an early season slump to spark the team during the later stages of the campaign. Webb Van Winkle and Tom Prior shared the right field duties. The mound chores were excellently handled by Bob Kubach, Tom Corlett, Roger Pennington, and John Scarinza. The 1956 season marked the end of a 30-year coaching career for Mr. Elwood Cornog at Summit High. In that time his teams have had both good and bad records, but every single member of these teams left SHS with a solid education in the principles of good sportsmanship, a tribute to Coach Comogis ex- cellent work. Prospects for the 1957 season are very good, with eight lettermen returning. If the team hits, the Hill- toppers could go all the way, resulting in a Suburban Conference championship. 1957 BASEBALL HOPEFULS Front row, left to right: B. Ruhnke, I. Johnston, R. Blaesser, R. The 1956 track season ended with a thrill when Dave Sharpe won a place for Summit in the Group III 2:20 yard low hurdles at the State Track Meet in New Brunswick. Our team, captained by Ralph Fico, won both of its triangle meets and lost its other dual meets. At the Suburban Conference meet, the Maroon and XVhite placed third out of the six schools that partici- pated, and in that meet Dave Sharpe and Ralph Fico were the mainstays of the team. The real backbone of the squad was the coach, Mr. event. Dave Sharpe set a new school record and tied the Suburban Conference record when he ran the low hurdles in 20.9 seconds at the Conference meet at Mill- burn. Over all, Summit had a fairly successful season. It must be noted, however, that without the hard work of the other members of the team there would have been no Hilltopper victories at all. The 1957 team, however, probably will not have any of the standout performers the 1956 version was fortunate in having. Nevertheless, they should win their share of the meets, for a well balanced squad is hard to beat on any given day. Thus, balance will be the main attribute of the 1957 team. 1957 TRACK HOPEFULS First row, left to right: Mr. Dilson, J. Seward, R. Brewster, S. Hurlbert, R. Cveissel, R. VValker, B. Colesworthy, J.
